So, Barnes and Noble is having their 50% sale and I just got a $50 gift card for my birthday. And I'm wondering which two (possibly three) to pick up. Thought I'd come here to see what people think.

I listed movies that I don't have on Blu or regular DVD. I'm not really thinking about upgrading that many DVD to Blu, unless I feel like it really requires a better transfer or something. For the record, the Criterion Blu's I own are Chungking Express, Hunger, Repulsion and Wings of Desire.

Thanks in advance!

The Red Shoes looks amazing on Criterion Blu Ray, was watching that at my friends house a few weeks back and just wished my Blu Ray player was multi-region. I have a UK Blu of Wings of Desire which looks stunning, I'm assuming the Criterion would be equally amazing.

ETA: You already have Wings of Desire. I really should pay more attention,

I heard The Leopard is pristine. Is that out yet?

'Yojimbo' and 'Sanjuro' were impressive on blu-ray.

eta: Phil, 'The Leopard' is out on blu-ray now.

How long is this sale?

If they have any copies of The Third Man left I'd say get that. Who knows what the new Lionsgate release will look like.

I've also got Yojimbo and Repulsion myself. Repulsion isn't quite worth the detail increase if you've already got a DVD copy, but Yojimbo is amazing.

Yesterday I ordered The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus Criterion on Blu (have yet to see either one... really excited!).
Also, Days of Heaven and the Sanjuro/Yojimbo blu.
Considering the price for the Kurosawa two-pack, you can't go wrong.

But to answer your question, Che is a wonderful epic that looks killer on Blu.

400 Blows, 8 1/2, Fishing with John, I Vitelloni, Under the Volcano (the documentary alone makes it worth it!), La Strada, Mishima...

Let's face it Parker, hardly any selection would be a mis-step.

They don't, unfortunately. I shoulda picked up a copy of that when I had the chance. At least I have the Criterion DVD.

As for Yojimbo and Sanjuro, I have them both on DVD and while I love them both I don't think I need the upgrade just yet.

I thought the Repulsion transfer was amazing. But I didn't have a good copy on DVD originally.

The Leopard is one of the films that I haven't seen yet. Heard about it before, but never seen it. I assume it's a must own?

Thanks. Between that and some screen shots I've seen I decided to pick it up sight unseen.

Also grabbed Stagecoach and Bigger than Life.

Thanks, all.

Isn't The Seventh Seal supposed to be 1.33:1 originally?

LOLA MONTES! It's a seriously gorgeous transfer.

(that, and seconded and thirded and fourthed on THE LEOPARD and THE RED SHOES)

Also, about SEVENTH SEAL, Bergman and Gunnar Fischer shot it in Academy aperture 1.37:1 so not sure where that comment came from?

That reminds me of working in the video store, having to talk down disgruntled customers who constantly pitched about Citizen Kane and Casablanca being P&S.

Very nice choices. Bigger Than Life is amazing and is one of the few movies that make me want to buy a Blu-Ray player. And The Leopard has a ridiculous amount of gorgeous images.
I'm jealous!

I don't know. The DVD Copy I used to own was Widescreen. It also had both the original Swedish with Subtitles version and the version dubbed by the guys who did those Hercules movies.

I thought The Leopard was supposed to get a small theatrical release this year. Any truth to that?

I think my two Criterions are gonna have to be Red Shoes and Short Cuts. Dazed & Confused, Lola Montes, and Bigger than Life as my second choices. I also want to re-buy Chunking Express; how does that look on Blu?

Amazing. It's the only upgrade I've done thus far and it was totally worth it.
