Negro Spirituals

Thread Starter
I am trying to locate some CD's of negro spirituals. I have located plenty but they are all sung rather too polished for my tastes by choirs and whatnot. I am specifically looking for a sound similar to the scene below from Glory and found at 5:35 at the second link.

Any help would be appreciated as I seem to be drawing a blank finding what I am looking for specifically.

I'd suggest a few of the classic Alan Lomax Folkways recordings. They've been reissued in various guises over the years, but the "Southern Journeys" series seems particularly well-organized to me.

I'd start with this one:

Southern Journey V. 8: Velvet Voices

Also good, though with greater prominence of female vocalists:

Southern Journey V. 6: Sheep, Sheep, Don'tcha Know the Road? - Southern Music, Sacred and Sinful

Southern Journey, V. 11: Honor the Lamb
