After months, weeks, and 15 hours of debate on the senate, at 4.04 am with 33 votes for it and 27 against, with 3 abstained, Argentina approves full and equal marriage for gay couples, including adoption rights.

I kinda feel proud. I'm going to bed!

Many huzzahs for Argentina. We live in a slightly more equal world now. That makes me happy.

Way to go. If our stupid church didn't throw such a tantrum we'd be already there. Bastards.

Ha, don't worry. The fucking Church did all they could to turn people against it. They rallied 200.000 people yesterday around congress and threw out words like Somorra, Devilish, Perverted and "protecting the family".
They've been trying to use everything they've got, it was a sickening but fascinating debate to watch.

I'm picturing a country sized Fire Island like party, and because I assume all Argentinians are attractive when shirtless I'm not really bothered by this.

Well done Argentina! Great news!

I think we all remember the commandment "Thou shall not be gay"... but not as much as we all remember Jesus' teachings in the book of Mark "You shall love your neighbor as yourself... unless that dude is a fag."

Seriously though, great news Argentina, I hope many more countries follow in shaming the USA.

Well done guys. One step closer to ghost and horse.

I don't know how things are in Argentina religion wise, but here in terms of active followers over 90% are christian orthodox. The fuckers are strong, rich and disgustingly well connected. There may be a separation of church and state, at least in spirit, but they're too powerful to ignore. And no matter how many times the degree of corruption, greed, backstabbing and back-room deals in the church becomes news it barely scratches at their popularity. It's infuriating.

We are on the same boat. I'd say 80% of the country at least are christians and they are very powerful.

I say many congrats to Argentina for doing this. Especially for what I figure (I'm assuming here) is a very Catholic country.

Hell, it amazes me that even Mexico City was able to pull it off.

Your soccer team can still eat it in my view.

Mexico doesn't have same sex marriage.
Your right, but within Mexico City's limits it is. It being a Federal District and all. Sort of like how it is with DC over here.

Also this backs me up:

Quote:
Same-sex civil unions have been legalized in Uruguay, Buenos Aires and some states in Mexico and Brazil. Mexico City has legalized gay marriage. Colombia's Constitutional Court granted same-sex couples inheritance rights and allowed them to add their partners to health insurance plans.

Jesus, that's awesome. Congratulations on having more civilized senators than uncivilized senators!
No wonder you've been salivating for me to come to Buenos Aires, you dirty little whore.

Also in all seriousness, good work, y'all.

Exactly, it's only within city limits. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage
And Regarding heritage rights and having the same legislative rights with your partners than heterosexual couples is not the same as same sex marriage.

There was an opposing bill sponsored by the right with parties which provided a "civil union" to gay couples. They'd have all the rights and laws heterosexual couples have, but it wouldn't be called Marriage. And they couldn't adopt.
They were protecting the word "marriage" as something sacred between a man and a woman.
That's what we've been fighting over here. No distinction, no second class rate or title. Equal meaning and rights.

Yea, Argentina!

I'm pretty sure this is years old, but its been making the email rounds again and is equally appropriate today. Also, it is funny.

In her radio show, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following response is an open letter to Dr. Laura written by a U.S. man and posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:

Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination ... End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of Menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I
smite them?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I'm confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your adoring fan.

Maybe it was Maradona constantly grabbing his players arses in the World Cup that tipped the balance?

Anyway, congrats Argies!

Was that stolen from or by Aaron Sorkin?
Sorkin appropriated it.

EDIT: Wikipedia says:

Quote:
The biblical tirade that President Bartlet unleashes on Dr. Jacobs is based on an anonymous email that Sorkin received. He notes that every effort was made to find the original author of the email to give them proper credit on the episode but searches came up empty.
It's possible that professor didn't come up with that himself, but forwarded the same anonymous email.

EDIT: After more digging, found this on Snopes:

Quote:
Confusing the issue further, because the letter has been circulated as wisely as it has in e-mail, in some versions the signature blocks of forwarders have come to be part of the mailing, leading those who receive those versions farther down the line to assume those people were the writers of the piece. Then there's the case of Jim Kauffman -- his signature was deliberately appended by someone without his knowledge, causing him to receive many a phone call and e-mail from those who have taken him for the essay's author.
Here ends my overly obsessive clarification.

America is now less progressive than Argentina. Congrats to the Argentines for their moral victory, but this news makes me feel depressed and embarrassed more than anything else. It's truly shameful the way our nation is being held back by people who believe in talking snakes. It's like something out of the fucking bronze age (oh, wait, that's EXACTLY what it is )
Great news indeed. Is it true that there was also a clear cut between the opinion between young and older ones?

That's understandable. But there are always supporters on both sides.

Congrats Argentina!

congrats Argentina.

I'm going to assume that they are already ahead of the US in term of health care, so why not this too.

Sadly I don't see gay marriage catching on in the uk given the widespread acceptance of civil unions. Not saying of course that couples who have been waiting years to marry shouldn't have one if they want one but it seems like everyones stopped pushing for real marriage rights - maybe to avoid upsetting couples who have had a civil union? Maybe because the glbt community is used to having to accept second best.

Good to see that Argentina have got the right idea, anyway.
