The New Semi Official PSP Thread

Swear to God, I ran the search engine AND Google ragged looking for one of the previous PSP threads that I know exist, and just cannot find it. My apologies if someone else's Google-Fu trumps mine.

Anyway. It's been about 3 years coming, but I finally snagged one of these for $25 off a co-worker. He had three games (Need For Speed Most Wanted, Madden 07, NHL 06) and a movie (Resident Evil Apocalypse) for it, all of which I sold for about $30 at Gamestop, and I need to stop right here to puzzle over how two out of date sports and racing games for the second-place portable gaming system are worth more than their big brothers on the home consoles. And I had the cashier check, too. All three of those are worth less than $2 on 360. The fuck?

Anywho.....they had a buy 2 get 1 free sale. Snatched up Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins through that, bought Wipeout Pure for $4 at the other Gamestop in the mall.

There are definitely other titles lined up in my future: the Silent Hill titles, the two Mega Man titles, Rock Band Unplugged, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Exit, and a couple others. Portable Final Fantasy VII and IX are givens. I know there are plenty of hidden gems on this system though. Educate me.

Anyone want to buy my PSP? Thing just sits there unplayed.

Actually, my plan is to just wait and try to trade it in once the Move or Rock Band 3 is out.

If you dont get the just released Persona 3 Portable, you will be missing a great game; sure the visual novel elements they use to save UMD space seem wonky at first, but the gameplay and added content is astonishing.

Yggdra Union, both Disgaea games (avoid Disgaea Infinite if you do not like visual novels, and Prinny: Can I be the hero if you dont want to experience the most brutally difficult game in ages).
There the remake of Final Fantasy Tactics (War of the Lions), the remake of the first PSone Persona, MGS: Portable Ops and MGS Peace Walker; Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, theres Castlevania Chronicles on the PSone downloads; Jeanne D Arc isa good startegy rpg as well.

I actually have Castlevania Chronicles on disc for PS1. I've been wanting to play Valkyrie Profile for ages now.

This Jeanne D'Arc game frustrates me. From what I've read, it sounds right up my alley in every aspect except for the fact that it's a tactical RPG. But I've pressed on through some shitty games that didn't have nearly as much going on for them as that. Is the rest of the game good enough to overpower my dislike of the battle system?

I swear, I'm going to get around to a huge stack of PSP games I want to play some day REAL soon. First stop Resistance Retribution.

The only thing to Jeanne D'Arc is the battle system. The story is as crappy as you would expect from a JRPG. The only reason I COULD play through it was for the battles (which is really all the game is anyway ... map location to map location where each location is a cut scene or a battle).

Id say yes; the combat system is basically a Ff tactics lite affair; grid based and with limited action choices per character turn.
Its a good game, and Id say it has less strategy elements than Disgaea, so it may be worth a shot.
There's also the Capcom Classics and Sega Genesis collections if youre game for some old school fun.
Theres also the Lunar remake!
Also, there's already announcements that there wil be a buttload of rpgs for the psp on the way; Ys and the newest Legend of Heroes: Trails of Sky Trilogy will make it to the west in the future:

The 3rd Birthday TBA 2010
Final Fantasy Agito XIII TBA
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep Summer '10
Knights in the Nightmare TBA
Valkyria Chronicles 2
Ys: The Oath in Felghana

Now you're speaking my language. Forgot that this happened this year.

It's gonna have to take a number and get in line until I'm done breezing through Chrono Trigger on the DS, though.

Its a really good remake, if you ask me. It got good reviews, and its very worth owning.
The PSone selection really needs to get its act together; sure, theres Grandia and Suikoden and the FFs, but more quality games are needed.
Also, the Metal Slug collection is a must buy, specially from PStore, since it loads a bit faster.
Also, theres Guilty Gear (Judgement and Accent Core) and Blazblue, both work really well on the psp.

Lunar is still waiting for me to LUMINES play it past the cool opening chapter. It looks pretty damned great.

My current psp diversions are: PatchwoLUMINESrk Heroes, Capcom Reloaded, and God of War.

I bought Peacewalker but haven't had a chance to crack it open...plus downloaded Holy Invasion of LUMINES Privacy Badman 2 that I haven't played either.

...Lumines-Just in case gravedigger is trapped under a truck and can't say it enough.

Uh-oh...i think i just threw a match in the gunpowder storage.

I mostly play mine at work, to kill time. I never touch it at home.

I downloaded FF VII; I got 25 hours into it and I can't beat Demon Guard... I haven't so much as tried in a month. I don't want to die from a stroke.

The Metal Gear games are good and have much replayability.

You can get Daxter at Gamestop for 3 bucks. Pretty fun game and it's a steal at that price. And yeah, Peace Walker is pretty fun.
Besides what's been previously mentioned, here are the ones I have enjoyed:

Both Pursuit Force games are fun. Crush is a good puzzle type thing. R-Type Command and WH40k: Squad Command are both quite good turn based strategy games. Plus you can't go wrong with any of the 3 Grand Theft Auto games on the system.

Rock Band Unplugged is $10 new this week at Gamestop. Couldn't have resisted that shit if I tried.
Let me know what you think. I played the downloadable demo and was bored to tears. Why couldn't they just do Amplitude and just call it Rock Band?

What difficulty did you play this on, Scott? I started on Medium just to get acquainted with the controls, but once my Amplitude skills came back to me, I bumped up to Hard, and it's been a blast, if quite a bit sparse in terms of features.
I played on Medium, but I wish the gameplay was more varied. Now that I think of it, this is probably as varied as the PSP hardware will allow. The way you switch tracks isn't as engaging as it is in amplitude and I guess the biggest problem is that you're pretending to play instruments on something that isn't shaped like an instrument.
It's unfortunate that the DLC tracks can't just share between the PS3 version and this, that would have really helped get me interested in it.

Persona 2 is coming out sometime this fall: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/05/24/lost-persona-chapter-persona-2-innocent-sin-coming-to-psp/

There's just a ridiculous amount of rpgs on this system I've found and I still need to play Persona 3 but I'll get to that after I finish Final Fantasy 4.
