[Rec]2 Post-Release Discussion

Just saw this via PSN's On Demand (whoever thought of this is a genius as a lot of these smaller films never get released down here where I live in theaters) and I found it to be pretty damn good. It's a great mixture of The Exorcist and Bava's Demons.

I had a few problems with it, the small 4 man SWAT team going in instead of more, and how quickly some of them get unhinged, but after finishing it, I realized that the knowledge of the "infection" is really secret, and the SWAT team go in thinking it's just a rescue mission, and when they get swamped by the possessed, well, I think anyone would lose it.

The comparisons to Aliens is pretty spot on, with even 1 character, Larra, being the Hudson character who really begins to lose it. (I half expected him to say "We're in some real pretty shit now man!") There wasn't a ton of action, but what little there was was great, and the overall dread and hopelessness in the film was creepy.

The sequence with the teenagers is a good sidetrack once the camera that the SWAT team is using has it's lenses destroyed, and I was wondering how the damn movie was going to continue until Angela showed up with the camera from the original.

Liked how there was more to explore in the attic, and how Night Vision was integral to the last act. There was even one moment there that made me jump a bit, and that doesn't happen often.

I give it a solid 7.5 out of 10. Looking forward to [Rec] Genesis and [Rec] Apocalypse.

Yeah this was quite a film. I didn't see the original but saw Quarantine and came away pretty impressed.

These guys are pretty genius with the overall atmosphere, tension and payoffs. Can't wait to see what they do next.

I watched this on VOD two weeks ago myself. Rented the original one evening and loved it, so I had to see this one. Very good as far as sequels go and like the first one, there's a great cliffhanger ending.

Just got around to catching this...It wasn't bad.

There's some things I feel that it does really well, but it then starts to feel like the demonic possession angle gave them carte blanche to do whatever they wanted, particularly in the last act.

Weirdly enough the Swat team annoyed me more than anything. Imagine a whole team of Hudsons from Aliens and that's what you get here. Even after knowing what they're up against they go into a world of panic (I can understand it to a point, but it got a little grating). Personally I think making the Swat team just a bunch of ordinary cops would've made that more palatable, but that's just me.

This is the move that Resident Evil should have been

That's a good point.

Thinking some more on it I think the possession slant is a great way to twist the virus in the first film, but they film makers seem to think that it gives them carte blance to go mad at the end. The room that can only be shown in the dark? Come on.

I really liked it. Mainly because it's really smart and economical. They know how to use the locations perfectly and react how a "normal" person would react to those events.

And the chick is hot as fuck.

Interesting sequel. I don't think it quite tops the first film, but it does go into some really fun places and doesn't try to retread the exact same ground as the original. For that alone, I can appreciate what the filmmakers were attempting. But beyond that, I loved how they just dove head first into the spiritual aspects of the plot. First of all, badass priest (and he isn't all cheeky.) Second, I loved the room that can only be accessed in total darkness. That was one of my favorite parts of the film. Just a neat conceit that works really well visually. I think my problem with the movie is the structure is too limiting for the story the filmmakers were trying to tell. That section with the kids feels detached from a lot of what's going on, and the camera footage rule just seems too arbitrary when you compare it to where the story ends up. Still, easily one of the best zombie movies to come out in the past few years.

I wish I could have the rave reviews that some people in this thread did, but I don't have that sentiment.

Now, I first saw Quarantine (at a drive-in, no kidding) before I saw [Rec]. I thought the remake was fine-enough, but then I watched the original on DVD and I did enjoy that quite a bit more. The American version definitely screwed up in the final 10 or so minutes, I say.

I finally was able to get this via rental and I just finished watching it minutes ago. Sure, there were some cool moments, and I liked the idea of this being like Aliens to the first one's Alien, but...

Overall I definitely did not like the sequel as much as the original. What James said about how the story turned out and the demonic possession angle given the filmmakers carte blanche to pull stuff out of their ass, I strongly agree with that. The more they expanded upon the story of the first, the stupider it got. Really, you don't want to think about the story too hard once you're done watching this, or else you'll see that some stuff just makes little to no sense at all. I preferred the story as told in the first movie. I wish they wouldn't have explained further what all the hullabuloo was.

I also agree with James on the elite SWAT team acting like a bunch of Hudson's, especially that one dude. It just got annoying after awhile. I got annoyed with all the damn arguing and bitching you heard in this movie too, between the priest and the SWAT team, and really, all the other characters you see bitch and moan at each other constantly and I really got in it once the movie jumped the shark by...

Showing some shithead teens trying to get a blowup doll to fly in the air via bottle rockets! I tell you, that subplot really tanked my enjoyment of the film. I loathed all three of those whiny arguing brats, I did not enjoy listening to that asshole fireman constantly griping at them, and I was glad when they were disposed of and you could move on with the story. Then, that whole "you can only see it in the dark" thing, which makes zero sense at all, and the final plot twist almost made me throw the remote control at the TV in anger; talk about a twist making the preceding hour and a half pointless.

No offense Rene, but after seeing that movie I do NOT look forward to ever seeing the next two movies in this series, I was so ticked off with how this movie sucked and ruined what should have been an awesome idea of a SWAT team vs. infected people motion picture.
