Atlanta troll bump thread

Because I'm tired of seeing weird spam at the top of the thread. Here's a catch-all for happenings around here.

1. Go see Spoon the Musical at Dad's Garage, written by Friend of CHUD Matt Myers. It's delightful. Runs through the end of the month.

2. Next time you're in Athens, go to the Highwire Lounge for some great specialty cocktails.

That is all.

When in town, hang out with Lenny.

Reminds me, I've still got a cigar for you.

Slang.

Aside from the Lounge, any other recommendations for an Athens visit? I'm over in Augusta, but I've never made the trip. Worthwhile?

Yeah, Athens is a great town. I went to UGA, and I'd say it's well worth a visit. I'll post some recommendations later tonight.

Okay, here's a few things. Keep in mind I haven't lived there in 10 years, so I'm bound to missing some cool places, but here are some of my favorites in addition to the aforementioned Highwire Lounge.

1. 40 Watt--Epicenter of the Athens music scene. A must. http://40watt.com/

2. Trappeze--Great beer restaurant. Do not confuse with this Trapeze, a club in Atlanta where strangers have sex with each other. http://trappezepub.com/

3. The Grit--Fantastic vegetarian restaurant. http://www.thegrit.com/

4. Graze--One of my good friends just opened this gourmet slider restaurant. The food is really good and there's a great beer selection. http://www.yelp.com/biz/graze-athens

5. Georgia Bar--No frills place, my kind of bar. It was a littler frattier than I remembered last time I went, but maybe it was an off day. Or maybe I'm 33 years old. http://www.yelp.com/biz/georgia-bar-athens

6. Wuxtry Records--If you're a music nerd at all, it's a must. http://www.yelp.com/biz/wuxtry-recor...xchange-athens

That's just a few places. You might look into restaurants like Clocked and The Last Resort, too. Oh, Weaver D's, too, for good soul food and the R.E.M. connection. Downtown is just across from UGA's north campus, too, which is really nice to walk through.

Good to know. It's only an hour away, no idea why I haven't been there considering I've only heard good things. A lot more variety than I expected, which is great. Even if Augusta hadn't been whittling away at my standards I'd be interested. Thanks. Especially on the record shop, I had access to some good places when I was in California and I've been missing it since I came back to the south.

Also, I had some vague awareness of Trapeze. I briefly wondered how I'd never heard of the Athens branch.

I once heard Misfit lived in an apartment next to a decomposing biomass. It's a fact!

Personally, I prefer The Porter to Brick Store. It's usually less packed and you don't have to drive all the way over to Decatur. And don't give me this "I live in Decatur" crap.

If you get a chance, go see BEST WORST MOVIE at the Landmark this week. George Hardy showed up after our viewing Saturday night. Nice guy.

Yeah, saw it Friday and it was great. Him being there and turning it into the kind of screening experience that the movie is about (moments of which were shot in the same theater) made the whole trip very fun and energetic (and meta as fuck).
Yeah, I wish I'd gone to that TROLL 2 screening a couple of years ago. I know I was in town at the time, but I don't remember what lame-ass excuse I used to not go.

I went to Okefenokee when I was a kid, and a bunch of my group went on a boat ride, and I was like, "No way in hell I'm riding in a boat out there." Glad to see, decades later, that I was right.

We went to The Counter in Roswell for lunch today. It was my second visit. They give you (skinny, unwanted) fries with purchase of burger now, but it's still TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT. Vortex 4EVR.

Got passes to see Scott Pilgrim on the 9th at the Plaza. I hear there will be "very special guests" there. Actually, I hear more than that, but I don't know how solid/true the news is. Doesn't really matter -- I'm just looking forward to seeing the film.
You have good info.
That's awesome then. The Plaza was a great place to see Shaun and Hot Fuzz. I look forward to Scott Pilgrim and hope if there is a Q&A that the dumb questions are kept to a minimum (and if anyone asks for a hug or about DragonCon, I hope they get punched in the face and then turn into a shower of coins).
They've re-hung their signed HOT FUZZ poster in preparation for the show. It's right next to their recently acquired Wiseau-signed THE ROOM poster. Titans of cinema!

I tried a new spicy pork taco at Bone Garden last night. It was tasty. I forget the name, but it's in the top right corner of the menu.

Nobody will top the idiot who asked about the Queen Mother at the Shaun Q&A.

Wright just blogged a link to more passes for Monday's screening:

Sold out. Not surprised, but goddammit anyways.

For those that don't know, Edgar, Michael and Jason are doing a signing the next day (Tuesday the 10th) at Criminal Records. 3pm. If they still have the VS. backdrop up at the store, there is the potential of some pretty freaking awesome pictures being taken.

Maybe? How awesome is it going to be? I don't know if I've seen any of their web stuff. Is it a collection of viral videos, or what?

It's more "found footage" type stuff, edited to viral-length. Educational/training videos, public access, forgotten z-grade DTV movies, infomercials...that kind of thing. A quick look at http://www.everythingisterrible.com will give you a good idea.

Okay, I'm gonna go.

I'll never be able to un-see Hitler Kid.

Seriously. Why in Lassie's name would something like that ever be put to video?

Fun show, though.

I'd say the E.T. porn might have been more scarring, actually.

It's great, we have internet. And a fan that goes back and forth.
Scott Pilgrim was great. That was also probably the best of the three Atlanta Edgar Wright Q&A sessions--helps that Atlanta wasn't the end of the road this time.
Scott Pilgrim totally delivered. I need to (and will) see it again, but after the first viewing I'm tempted to say it belongs in the Perfect Movies list CHUD made a while back. I can't think of anything I would change in that film. And while all the fights were fantastic, I think Patel's Bollywood style music video attack was my favorite.

Loved the Q&A, though I could tell the guys were worn out (they had just come from Chicago and were in the air when the film started). They still gave good answers, and even better we didn't have any outright stupid questions this time.

"Michael Cera."

Great movie, great night.

"Whatever your question is, the answer is yes!"

I was afraid that one guy was going to ask an Arrested Development movie question. At which point he would have gotten beaned with my cup.

I really hope the story of Jason Schwartzman's panties makes it onto the DVD somewhere. The world needs to hear it.
