Free speech, yes, of course, but god dammit if its one thing I don't want to deal with on the one legit vacation I take its this bag of dicks.

Apparently the Westboro Baptist Church will be there on Thursday. I am not sure Fred Phelps has brought his shit show to quite a scene like this before...

That's some blatant fan-service right there. Surely an ironic sitcom appearence can't be far off?
This is fucking genius. Genius, I tell you! There's so much potential for 80s comedy doings I can't even begin to imagine it all.

The GOD HATES NERDS sign will, sadly, probably come to fruition. I can't believe these assholes.

I wish I could go just to dress up like Northstar, and give Phelps one of those "good game" ass slaps.

Sweet! Im getting my copy of Preacher #1 signed!

Don't they get their money from lawsuits against people that attack them? The best thing to do is ignore them.

Is that how it works? I was seriously pondering how they have the money to go on all these trips. They actually came to the town I work in (a fairly small suburban Boston community), a year or so ago, to protest some high school play that involved homosexuality in some way. If they were simply spreading their hate at comic book conventions and plays, I could laugh at the absurdity of their ignorance but showing up at the funerals of slain military serviceman and that poor kid who got murdered is really just some of the most evil shit I've ever seen.
It's always the ones who protest too much, that have the skeletons in their closets. For example Ted Haggard, David Vitter, Newt Gingrich, and all the 80's televangelists. Fred Plehps is such an asshole, I bet he has the most fucked up skeleton in his closet.

If you're protesting sexual deviancy, I don't think Virgin Mecca is the place I'd choose.
I don't know, if slash fanfic is any indication, the ultra geeky like the gay.
Has anyone considered maybe this guy just REALLY likes Batman? Or maybe Sonic the Hedgehog, and people who want to fuck Sonic the Hedgehog?
Does anyone else think that they're going to specifically target the Scott Pilgrim booth? It's the only property I can think of that is going to be there that has featured gay-friendly scenes in media that one of these people might have been exposed to over the course of the year.

The whole congregation beaten to death by cosplayers. Please God, make it so!

I think this whole problem could be solved by a herd of furries with baseball bats. What are they gonna do, identify them?

"It was a giant badger and two cows! And a pink Thompson's Gazelle!" Phelps said woozily as the paramedic loaded him into the meat wagon.

The paramedic looked to his partner as she slammed the door shut.
"This one's got a compressed skull fracture and a flail chest, but let's not run any red lights."

Nerds won't do shit, but I do hope all the wireless signals gives him a brain tumor.

No, but a SEAL team in cosplay drag could mete out rough justice for picketing soldier funerals. Just imagine five SEALs wearing ill-fitting Sailor Moon garb beating these clowns to death in the middle of the con, then blending into the crowd around them?

What are you gonna do, identify them?
Fuck beating them up. That's the cheap way out.

Sexually harass them until they break down. Remember though: make sure to do it in a loving way.
Yeah, I think the 501st is more capable of sexually harassing the guy than beating the shit out of him.

Theey're actually citing idolatry as the reason they are protesting the con. But aside from scott pilgrim there has been a long-term community and scholarly component of SDCC supporting LGBT rights.

The crazy thing about Phelps (one of many) is that he is one of the most successful civil rights lawyers in the history of law...then he drank mercury or something and went nuts.

I do agree that in many cases, internalized homophobia results in people taking that out on public policy to hide their own shit, but these fuckers going to funerals and shit is over the top.

No sign of them so far. Maybe he'll show up to the Masters of the Web panel.

Isn't there only like 4 or 5 of these goons left? Phelps and his retarded daughters or something?

Well, the stuff on the surface isn't exactly a picnic either. The guy is just evil personified.
The counter-protest, which was fairly awesome and seems to have been significantly larger than Phelps' group.

I am not an animal!

Anyone else really dislike the new Google image search page?
I'm partial to "ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNO-TOAD", "Odin Is God - Read The Mighty Thor #5" and, tired as the meme is, "fucking magnets - how do they work?".

You gotta assume Phelps is used to this type of creative mockery by now, but it still feels good.

I can't get over the size of the Warner Brothers swag bags.

That just warms the cockles of my geeky heart. Something similar actually happened a few months ago in my own life: the mother of Matthew Shepard came to my school to speak about the murder of her son and gay rights, and word got around that Phelps and his ilk were coming to protest. They never actually showed, but there was a MASSIVE counter-protest, complete with signs saying things like "God Loves Fags" and the like.

I could not have been prouder.

Phelps was supposed to protest the church that I'm a member of in Boston once but never showed. I have no idea why, since we don't really support gay marriage. Maybe because we have female pastors on staff? Regardless, it was a point of pride that he'd choose to picket us. If Phelps doesn't like you, chances are you're cool.
By that logic, pretty much everyone is cool.

He was supposed to protest Ronnie James Dio's service. Only two of his cult showed up. There were more counter protesters.

Westboro Baptist Church Attended FBI Training Sessions, Is Now Disinvited

Quote:

The FBI said Wednesday that members of an anti-gay fundamentalist group participated in the bureau's training of police officers and FBI agents – a move the bureau says it will take steps to remedy in the future.

The bureau extended the invitations to Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., for training this spring at two bureau facilities in Virginia: Quantico and Manassas.

Westboro has stirred widespread outrage with raucous demonstrations at the funerals of U.S. military service members. The group contends God is punishing the military for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.

National Public Radio first reported the FBI's involvement with Westboro.

At FBI headquarters in Washington, bureau spokesman Paul Bresson acknowledged that Westboro was invited to the training sessions.

An FBI official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said that in retrospect, the bureau underestimated how the involvement of the outside organization would be perceived.

As a result, said the official, there will be additional layers of review or approval on outside speakers.

The official added that bureau personnel organizing training courses were trying to bring in a variety of views they thought would be helpful to investigators.

Bresson, the bureau spokesman, said that the invitation to Westboro "was done in an effort to establish open dialogue in an academic setting to train law enforcement on how to more effectively engage with the activist community."

Of course, America.  Of fucking course.

I understand the outrage over our government having any civilized dealings whatsoever with these people, but I also understand the FBI's endgame.  Interviewing these types of people and having the opportunity to get inside their heads a bit makes sense.  Know thy enemy, and all that...

edited for godawful grammar...

It's just that I can't bring myself to believe they're that smart.  What next?  Selling them weapons to trace where they end up?

Fred Phelps is still alive?  They let him out of his display case at the museum?
