I love the fact that the picture says "apparently". Like it may or may not be the moment that the GIANT FUCKING WHALE RIGHT OVER THE BOAT causes the damage.

Big guy was just sending a high five.

Whales hate paparazzi too.

"We were just the wrong boat, in the wrong place at the wrong time."

That's like how John McClane feels about once every ten years.

I went on a whale watching thing in Hawaii last year, and there was a point where a male who was 'protecting the female and her calf' was 'sent by the female to investigate us' (according to the people running the boat). The fucker was bigger than our boat, and went under us 3 times. I was the only one who was terrified, and now I see I was right to be.

Nothing has been proven in a court of law.

This news reminds me of the story of the Essex which incidentally was the inspiration for Moby Dick.

I hope Paul Watson and the rest of the crew on "Whale Wars" isn't too upset about this news. Now the Japanese (and a fellow chewer that's on timeout at the current time) have something to back up their desire to hunt and eat whales.

No no, now they have something to back up their scientific research hunting you mean.

My bad. And they even hold up the signs in english on deck to remind me of that. "Fuck You Whale!"

And yet if this happened in the middle of a movie I'd be thinking, "Suspension of disbeleif my hairy ass. There's no. Fucking. Way."

If a Dead Calm remake ever gets off the ground they should definitely have a whale smash play into it.

I honestly had no idea whales could even do that let alone would until I heard the story of the Essex, Buch.

Saw video footage of the Whale Smash tonight. Fuck that was hilarious. Poor eyesight nothing, that was done on a whale dare, I'm sure.

Nah. What we all saw was footage of the new "Orca" reboot. You know it has to be on the drawing board....

Interesting story, and one that I've been waiting to discuss. I've read several articles on the incident, and from what I've gathered, there seems to be some argument as to whether or not the whale was being harassed by the tourists before it lashed out. To me, this is totally beside the point. Humans have been the enemies of whales (sorry, pro-whale groups, while well intentioned you have not managed to overcome the deadly effects of pollution and hunting on the whale population) for centuries, and I see no reason why these individual humans needed to have misbehaved for the whale in question to have felt the need to take matters into it's own fins

With their numbers dwindling and the ocean in crisis, can anyone really blame them?

I really think this was a case of the whale either not knowing the boat was there or confusing it for another whale. No need to call out Ahab on this one.

This is very possible, I'll admit to not knowing how a whales psychology works or whether or not their visual acuity could make that kind of distinction between a whale and a boat. I know that I'm basically anthropomorphizing their motives with regards to the boat attack, but I have to say: We know they're highly intelligent, and I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that some of them could be fed up with human interlopers in their aquatic home

Just my take

Between this and the recent Sea World death, my concern for robot/zombie/ape armageddon was misplaced.

When that space monolith shows up in the future (if we're still here) looking for a one-on-one with a cetacean, mankind's screwed.
