That's hard to even address without knowing your criteria for "moving the show forward".

Season 1 ended with Dexter killing his brother and Deb traumatized.

Season 2 ended with Doakes dead, motherfucker.

Season 3 ended with Dexter becoming a husband and father.

Season 4 ended with Rita dead.

So IMO seasons 1 and 5 are the only ones that can be even remotely argued that "not much changed" on a plot level. As it turned out Season 1 had a pretty profund impact on the characters, especially Deb. We'll have to see whether Season 5 does the same - as I said previously, if Season 6 doesn't start out with Quinn knowing something of Dexter's secret, I'll be mighty disappointed.

Exactly. Deb has changed pretty significantly as well. Even Dexter's "Dark Passenger" has evolved. If you tried to skip from Seaon 1 to Season 5, there'd be a huge disconnect between where the characters were and where they are now.

Look, I'm not going to deny that that's something - it's just not very much. Those changes are more token changes than anything else (apart from Rita dying) in that they barely alter the dynamic of the show and don't move the narrative towards anything new. And no, I'm not saying that an important character has to die or that Deb has to find out - truthfully, the only reason I'm complaining about that is that the show keeps cock-teasing us with close calls, and it's getting pretty obnoxious.

To give you an example of what I personally feel it should be, think of THE SHIELD (not a 1:1 comparison, but I mention it because it also hinged on characters being able to keep a secret safe for 7 seasons). Together with season-long arcs, that show also had a series-long arc. It broadened its scope, changed dynamics and was constantly propelling the narrative forward fearlessly towards its conclusion so that once you rewatch it, it seems like a one long serialized novel. Dexter is taking the opposite approach and is very episodic in nature. One season Dexter has a family, one season Dexter has a puppy, but nothing much changes. Even with regards to his "evolution", his biggest step was taken in the first season when he realised that he actually cares about Rita - since then it's been varying degrees of the same thing.

The Batman comparison was pretty apt, and maybe I should get used to it. I just seem passionate about it because there really is some greatness there and feel that the show should be SO much better than it currently is.

Well we can at least agree on that. If I have to watch another Deb almost catches Dexter scene im going to kill someone. Everything else though I have to disagree with. Dexter changes and while he changes we get to watch him operate. All of the seasons big villains always relate to Dexter in some way that changes him or teaches him some lesson. Chase for instance truly did help him get over Rita and in more than one way.

Maybe it's all misdirection.. while we're beating our heads against the wall over how dense Deb is for not figuring it out, and we're keeping an eye on Quinn... you just wait: Masuka will sneak in under the radar and uncover the truth using some minute little detail that everybody else overlooked. You heard it here first!

Really, though... I'm getting blueballs on the Dex/Deb thing already. Just pull the fucking trigger on that story or kill Deb off.
