Frankie and Zack's 300 (2006)

Today I actually watched this all the way through for the first time since I saw it in theaters. I thought it held up pretty well. When this movie became a phenomenon I got sick to death of all the "Gerard Butler yelling" imitations really quickly, but I think he's quite good in the movie. His cocky asshole intensity and emphasis on certain words had me rewinding the movie a couple of times.

"See, rumor has it THE ATHENIANS!!!!!! have already turned you down...."

The HOMEFRONT scenes are still the film's biggest flaw. I'd like the movie a lot more if the whole thing was just an exaggerated macho SPARTAN tale that Wenham's character tells to rally the troops.

"And then....Leonidas' wife talked to a bunch of old Greek council members!!!!!!! AAH-OO! AAH-OO! RAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!" doesn't really fit into that.

"But then Jigsaw raped her!!! What an asshole!!!"

I love the political nonsense. Stephen MacHattie is so unintentionally rapey.

The payoff to the homefront stuff makes the break in pacing worth it. The whole thing really is the exaggerated yarn of Wenham's imagination, but its all in aid of getting the apathetic council to send more aid. We need those scenes for that set up to work the minute bit it already does.

And I gotta say, the majority of the film is fluff, but damn if I don't get goosepimply from Wenham's last speech on the battlefield for a non-exaggerated legion of Greek soldiers.

I think you can eliminate all the homefront stuff and lose nothing. Wenham's speech at the end about how the story of BOLD Leonidas and his 300 spread and inspired all of Greece to unite is enough for me.

The homefront stuff definitely weakens the film for me. The 2nd time I saw it, that stuff just draaaagged.

I know I'm in the minority here but I've always found this film to be kind of boring. There are time where it is able to get me riled up but for most of its running time I'm just kind of ambivalent. It's beautiful to look at and I enjoyed it on a purely aesthetic level the first time but after that my enjoyment kind of waned.

The homefront stuff is carried by a shitty actress to boot. I don't know if Gorgo is always this bad (never watched Sarah Conner Chronicles) but she was just way too earnest or something. Hated pretty much everything about her. It's too bad because Dominic West is great.
