Penelope spotted!

LOVE the look Barbossa has for this film. Hell, I'm more excited for more of him than I am for more of Sparrow. Hope they don't shove him in the background like they did in World's End.

Ian McShane as a pirate. Not only a pirate, but Blackbeard. That is what sells this ticket for me, despite the fact that I've been consciously this series since it began.

I just stated in the other Pirates thread that I'm happiest that Gibbs is coming back. Fantastic supporting character. After watching the Richard Lester Three Musketeers movies and seeing the enormous influence that those had on the Pirates trilogy I'm guessing that they went with McShane to bring some Oliver Reed goodness.

Barbossa in an actual Royal Navy uniform, and with another officer, has to be a pretty major plot point. Sparrow-esque double-dealing shenanigans at work, no doubt.

Rush was the best part of At World's End.
I'm definitely excited for more Barbossa. He was always one of the best things about the series. And what I like about no more Will and Elizabeth is that 1: No more Orlando Bloom acting blandly. 2: It gives us more chance to see interesting supporting characters like Gibbs.

So... Barbosa's on a crutch, and in every pic you can't see his feet. Could he be sporting a peg-leg in this installment?
Also, I hope we get more gags with English Office guy's eye popping out.

I don't get the Gibbs love. He was fine, but I never thought anyone would be like "man I hope they give him some really great exposition in this one!"
That's why he's great, he just can't wait to give that exposition and is actively upset when someone else gets to deliver it instead of him.

I don't think a Royal Navy uniform would be blue. Not an English one at least.*

Maybe he got himself another ship and declared himself a commodore, like Jack hinted at in the first film.

*EDIT: Never mind, I'm an idiot, they did have blue naval coats.

What are you talking about? They gave him a nice presence in the third movie. He even carried the damned flick himself for the first thirty minutes while Sparrow was off-screen - so well, in fact, that it makes me want to see a Barbossa-centric adventure.

Anyway, I'm with you on the Rush factor. Much as Depp owns these films, I think Rush is even more of a selling point of this series for me. One of the most memorable moments of all the movies remains that scene in the first one where he actually says "Arrr!" And I agree with the feeling that he was part three's strongest suit.

In the third pic, you can see a sliver of his right leg covered with a bluescreen sock with red tracking markers. I'd say a CG peg of some sort...

But once they get Jack back, he's just sort of there. He's got some nice moments at the pirate meeting, but not nearly what was promised by his entrance at the end of Dead Man's Chest.

Barbosa's maniacal laughter is the only thing that saves the Maelstom sequence. That one shot of him steering wildly, laughing into the air saves the movie for me.

I hope it was bitten off by some nasty sea denizen.

I think you may be right, does look like McShane.

The costumes look great, but the costuming has never been the problem with these movies. As long as Barbosa continues to hold a prominent presence in the proceedings and Blackbeard gets to McShane everyone's lives this should be worth the price of admission; just keep Depp from being too much like himself. Please.

Picture of McShane as Blackbeard:

That's what I'm talking about.
His beard should be on fire. McShane's old school, he can handle it being done practically.
Some nice costumes there (Cruiz looks great) but after lackluster sequals they are going to have to do a lot more than that to convince me.

Oh yes it should me. Man, Blackbeard was badass!

Well, he only set it on fire when he was going into battle.
And you don't think he's battling craft services for more cocktail weenies?

According to the stories, he never set his beard on fire. He would light fuses that he'd tucked beneath his hat with the ends dangling down.

I just hope he plays it as Al Swearengen on a boat.
