Congress finally faces the Crack/Cocaine sentencing disparity problem

About bloody time.

This fix is far from perfect, and it's only passed in the house so there is plenty of time for the obsolete senate to keep institutionalized drug law racism alive, but I am going to give a little silent cheer for this development. I don't understand how anyone can stand up in public and come down on the other side of this issue. I just don't know what their argument would be. Powder Cocaine is classier?

Individuals carrying/using any drug for a first offense and unrelated to separate violence crimes should see no jail time and only receive punishments revolving around fines and rehabilitation.

Our prisons are crowded with people needing medical treatment, not separation from normal society.

Often in an environment where the drugs that got them there are readily available.

Exactly. Many non-violent drug users suffer from some sort of mental illness as well. Putting them in prison then putting them back into society without proper medical treatment just sets them up for failure.

As I'm not appropriately qualified, I'd like to hear from our resident Sorkin scholar Rath on this news' connection to the now-classic West Wing episode Mandatory Minimums, which called for this issue to be resolved eleven fucking years ago.
