Project Runway: Season 8 or so - Page 2

Gretchen's collection: it wasn't baaaaaaad, just unremarkable. There were some individual elements here and there that were really sharp, though. The prints and the colors got repetitive and it all kinda blended together after a while. Current fashion? I call bullshit on that...Andy's collection looked more 'current' than hers.

Andy's collection: Grey. Grey. Green. Grey and green. Grey. They were nice but fell into the same pattern that hindered Gretchen's collection. The goofy headpieces really didn't help at all. Again, there were some really nice outfits in there, including 2 that my wife REALLY wanted for her own collection.

Mondo's collection: Subdued for Mondo but still MONDO. Varied and cohesive from beginning to end without being too cartoonish. I thought that he was the clear winner.

Other thoughts:
WTF was Jessica Simpson on?
Michael Costello was classy as hell in the reunion.
Ivy is still a powerbitch, and she proved it in the reunion.
GREAT argument between the judges, especially Heidi and Michael.
Michael likes salt...alrighty then.
Those fake 'commercials' for the fairy jobmother were annoying and unfunny as hell.

Overall, it was a solidly entertaining season. The top 4 should have solid fashion careers ahead of them.

I'd like to point out that when Heidi said "I like chocolate." I shifted in my seat a little bit.

The argument that Nina & Michael were positing, that fashion moves quickly and last year was Seth Aaron & Mondo and this year is Gretchen is interesting... but I'm not sure I buy it. I'd much rather see someone get rewarded for pushing things forward (even though Mondo is apparently behind the times?? or something) than easily sell-able.

That plaid strapless dress was the tits.

That was their argument. Not sure I buy it, but Nina and Michael are in the biz and that's where they see fashion heading. Current styles are tight and sleek, which means relaxed and flow-y is likely where things are going. And yes, its about who will eventually buy the designer's clothes. You get a sense of the woman who will buy Gretchen's stuff. It's not clear who will buy Mondo's. His stuff is so "crazy" that the average woman couldn't pull it off.

The thing is, EVERY OUTFIT in Mondo's collection was unique and different from the others YET they all worked together as a collection. Sure, the polkadot print was used twice, but it was used to great effect in both instances, and the two outfits were distinctly different in tone. Andy and Gretchen both suffered from sameness.

The standout dresses:
Andy:
- the one that Jessica Simpson loved with the single shoulder strap. My wife wants that dress NOW.
Mondo:
- the opening number
- the skull tunic
- both polkadot dresses
Gretchen:
- none really, but there were a few elements here and there that were cool.

The decision wasn't about uniqueness. It was about what was sellable and on trend. Michael and Nina told Mondo that he was too over-the-top. If he toned it down, just a little, he'd have won. Most woman can't pull off prints on prints. If he'd pair the plaid pants with a solid top, for example, it'd come off as more sophisticated and less cartoony. That's why his 11th look works. The patterned skirt contrasts nicely with the solid top. Mondo's plaid dress worked because it was short and showed off skin. I get the critiques. I just wish they'd told Mondo this prior to the finale because up until that point they'd been praising him for his use of double patterns.

Yeah, they told him to tone it down after he'd already made the whole collection, when his "uniqueness" got him to the final 3 in the first place.
I dunno, whatever.

I'll have to watch that when I get home: youtube is blocked here at work.

From what I've seen and heard, Tim was very critical of many of the judging decisions for this season.

LOL this is awesome. I too was confused by the judges' opinions a lot this season... glad to see I'm not alone.

Is it just me or has the white finalist beaten out the minority finalist the last few seasons. Mondo this year and Kiotto (sp) a few seasons ago, plus the Puerto Rican dude from last season. I'm just saying.
