Friday Night Lights - the final season

A bit early maybe but it seems most people here watch it on Direct TV. Starts at the beginning of October I think.

Interview with Buzz Bissinger on the Bill Simmons show:

http://c.espnradio.com/audio/381806/...-215840.32.mp3

I haven't had time to listen to it so don't know what spoilers there are about this season (unlikely) or season 4.

It's an interesting interview. Doesn't really touch on the final FNL season, instead just talks about how the high school football players are used by the system and it's heartbreaking to see how some of them - though not all - end up. Bissenger says something like "the saddest place in the world is a locker room when there are ex-players there". They are all banged up and afraid to leave their home town.

Mostly they talk about current Basketball and Baseball news. Lebron James, steriods in baseball etc.

Yeah, I was thinking about posting a link to the Simmons podcast on the books forum. That interview is pretty poignant, especially when Bissinger is talking about his disabled son. Simmons, to his credit, does not feel the need to throw his two cents in here and there and lets Bissinger drive the bus. Also appreciated that Bissinger owned up to doing the LeBron book simply for the money.

Someone's taken the the trouble to record a podcast for every episodeof FNL. No idea if it's worth a listen as I haven't had the time to listen to any of them, but there are interviews with some cast members, such as Brad Leland (Buddy Garrity)

Heads up, apparently the season 4 DVD set is the truncated NBC versions of the episodes. Not sure how shorter they are from the Direct TV versions. Still worth supporting though.

I'm about two months late on this, but I didn't look at the Emmy noms until today:About time! (especially for Britton and Chandler)

Also, I think replays of the show are starting on ABC Family in September.

First S5 promo

Not much new here, but it looks like the East Dillon crew will be front and center, which is fine by me since I warmed to all of them by the end of last season (even Becky who annoyed me a bit at first).

Any guesses on what's in store?

I enjoy this show greatly and not just because I think Connit Britton is MILF-ily delicious. My wife made me watch the first season and I have been hooked since. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Very excited for the final season, although slightly heartbroken that the show will be ending. But hell, we got 5 seasons of this show and that's a great thing.

Anybody watch it?
Yeah, pretty low-key opening, but it was fitting. Riggins looks like a broken man.
Yep.

The scene with Landry and Mrs. Saracen made me wonder if they're writing her out of the series, too. Maybe they'll still have shots of her at the football games. Did we get any scenes of Matt's mom leaving/planning to leave last season?
IIRC she was going to stick around to help Matt's Grandma. But Gilford is supposed to return this season as well so I don't think she'll be written out yet.

No Minka Kelly apparently. Which is disappointing for obvious visual reasons but storywise Lyla had probably run her course. It's not like she was going to be waiting for Riggins when he leaves jail and they ride off into the sunset. Here's my prediction for Riggins: He'll end up assistant coach, or at least something to do with football at the school.
Kinda disappointed they brought Landry back just to send him on his way again. Last seasons send-off seemed like a nice place to leave him. Pretty solid episode although it was a bit heavy on set-up. Weird foreshadowing for this girl "Epic" (that is what they were saying, right?).

Oh yeah, loved the cheeky play for the 2-point conversion. Hopefully we still get a full dose of Football this season amidst all the good-byes.

Fucking great episode this week. Best I can remember in the past couple of seasons, which is saying something.
Julie's fall from grace kinda makes me sad, though I assume she'll pull it together.

The lockerroom stuff was good, indeed, and I'm glad they didn't spend more than one ep on Buddy Jr.'s delinquency. The team is strong, and they trust the coach. Here's hoping that the recruiter approaching Vince's dad doesn't result in anything going wrong.

Anyone else miss hearing "Clear Eyes, Full Hearts"?
I think we'll hear it once more before the season - and the show - ends.

Another great episode this week - I was worried this might be a soft season - but it hasn't turned out that way at all.
Damn, the way things are going we're looking at a season nearly on par with the first.
You know an episode is really good when you try to barter with it... "Aw, come on, one more scene!?!"
The scene between Ornette & Coach was stellar. I know that the show was shot & locked over the summer/early fall, but it is quite fortuitous that they are going with the "father has his hand out to recruiters" subplot after all the crap that came out involving Cam Newton.
And I fully expect Eric to destroy that Oil Rig Trophy at some point.

I don't 'ship often (Jim and Pam on the Office, Shawn and Juliet on Psych, Chuck and Blair on Gossip Girl, and a few other shows), but I cheered at Matt and Julie being back together.

No one? C'mon, this is shaping up to be a great season and that was a tear-worthy moment.

Season's almost over.  Only 4 episodes of FNL left, ever.eek.gif

Matt and Julie were very nice, and it shows some emotional growth on Julie's part.  She was able to recognize her TA's self-serving tendencies, even if there was no chance she would meet him in Tennessee - and make a good choice.

I liked how they subtly identified the setting as Chicago with the oh-so-brief glimpse of the Chicago cop's hat.cool.gif

This is an intervention: yes you do. smile.gif

That was a cool little twist though, as the obvious thought when flipped the car around was, "Good lord, there she goes again... are they going to try to play this off as romantic?"

Well played, FNL. Well played.

I'm also enjoying the deft ways they're interweaving casts both old and new. They've created a great little world with this show, and amazingly they've managed to keep going long enough to wrap it up in what looks like it will be a very satisfying way. Big artistic credit to DirecTV for being the only financial reason the show got to this point. Because of that out-of-left-field multi-year renewal, FNL will be remembered not as one of many good shows canceled too soon, but as one of the all-time great works the medium has produced.

This week's episode had the real tear-jerking moments.cool.gif

Gilford had about two minutes of screen time but was gold.  Saracen has grown up.

This week's episode was my favorite of the season.  So many wonderful scenes/moments...

- Riggins telling the lawyer he didn't want Billy to speak

- Buddy Garrity being the guy who defends Tim the best, even eliciting a smile from the kid

- Vince's mom stepping in and getting Ornette to back off

- Luke coming to grips with his future

- Eric's decision

- Tammy being understanding of Eric's decision and supporting him

- Vince's "Come to God" moment when he talks to coach outside his house.  LOVED their banter in the car on the way to the fieldhouse.

Only 3 more episodes frown.gif

I ain't gonna lie... I teared up more than once.  A really satisfying finale, if you ask me.

Texas forever.

Fucking wonderful finale.  This series is on the level of "The Wire" and I will believe that until the day I die.

FNL, 2006-2011.

You will be missed.

And Michael Waxman, Michael Mann's regular 1st AD, directed the shit out of this episode.

Amazing, moving finale. For a moment I thought we wouldn't find out who won. Glad we did.

My wife was a bit more perceptive than me and noticed right away that Vince was wearing a State ring.

Glad they kept the Riggins brooding to a bare minimum, he was always a much more engaging character when he was happy.

Really loved how the final football scene was handled.

I think it's a testament to the show that the finale was so satisfying even though they basically gave us the "and everyone meets up in heaven!" conclusion that had everyone at peak happiness and moving forward in their lives in a positive way (that last minute decision to cut the scene with Street getting injected by a needle labeled "Shark Hormones" and then standing up from his wheelchair - was probably a good idea).

Yeah, on any other show it would be cheesy and shallow, but here it works.

At first I was sceptical about Tyra and Riggins, but it worked for me. Liked the way they acknowleged that things might not work out.

Would have been good to see Smash. Maybe advising Vince.

Also, Where did JD Mccoy and his dad go? They didn't show up this season.

Just started watching this show.  Burned through the entire first season in three days.  I disliked the film, so had zero interest in checking this show out.  After a some strong recomendations, I put it on this weekend.  WOW, what a great fucking show.  After one season, it ranks in my top 5.  Happy to see I got 4 more seasons to go.

Go ahead and skip the 2nd season. You'll thank me.

almost done with season 2... talk about a drop off.  Tell me it regains it's season 1 stature in season 3.... Landry, who was one of my favorites, is quickly annoying me with his murder confession.  The arch rivals sharing the field is pissing me off.  I do like Santiago and Garidy's relationship, Riggins drug dealing roommate and I like what's going on between Julie and her mom.

For every one thing I like, there is two more that I hate.  Matt's arch this season has been painful.  Between him and Lyla Jr, then the live-in nurse, I almost wanted to fast foward.  Smash, who I ended up liking at the end of last season, has degressed into an annoying stereotype.  There is nothing interesting going on with the coach, he seems to be more of a background character just providing roadblocks for other characters that get past.  And the football games, while unrealistic, they were still watchable in Season 1, this season you almost have to be a detective to find out if they won.  And that Mexico subplot with the Stem cells and the suicide attempt.... WTF were they thinking.  Atleast I got a laugh with the Wheelchair Lovers and the Pee fetish, but that has been the only interesting thing with Streets the whole season.  Was this because of the writters strike?

I had a similar reaction to Season 2.  So much that I stopped watching the show for a long time till it all became available on Instant.

I went from killing season 1 in about 3 says... to barely being able to watch 1 episode a day for season 2

Season two is by far the weakest. Don't worry too much about it.

Season 2 was cut short due to the writer's strike, and the Landry "Murder" plotline was a desperate attempt to boost ratings. Season 3 picks things up in a big way and may even be the best season of all. (although I LOVE what they did with 4 and 5)

glad to hear it, really glad.  Season 1 probably ranks up in the top 5 for me, glad to see it returns to form.

S2 got screwed, but still, it has some of the most powerful moments in the show's history.  The fact that the murder subplot stood out so horribly shows you how great the show is overall.

Glad to see so many folks are finally picking up on the show.  Kyle Chandler is on Letterman tonight.
