***Savini will always be good in my book. Based off of his past work. Who gives a fuck what he's doing now.***
I definitely understand that.
I wish to clarify something before I bring the wrath of everyone down on my head:
Savini was a great FX artist. I say was because he, by his own admission, hardly does FX work himself anymore. But now he appears in grade b horror direct to video flicks, where everything he does seems really forced, to me.
When he's an actor, the whole picture slows down to focus on him and he really seems amatuerish, from his stunt work(which is so slow that you can almost see the other actors waiting for him to finish his stunt) to his actual acting where he seems like he's reading off of cue cards ala SNL.
He has great ideas, but how often does a movie become a great movie based on the actor's created backstory for the character that is never seen in the movie or the ideas that a director was thinking about when he shot a particular movie.
And for that I mean: 1. When Savini was directing NOTLD the remake, he was referring to the zombies as mechanized cadavers not zombies because zombies imply voodoo. There was nothing organized about the dead in the remake, they were just instinct...but did we ever get that aspect as part of the movie? Not really.
2. Savini wanted to convey Death in the remake, from the season it was shot in to the look of the house and the country side to enhance the atmosphere. I really don't feel that that came across in the movie.
Savini is a man of great ideas, but not a good way in executing them.
Also, he really doesn't have the star power to be in a big Hollywood movie, so he's in these low budget movies where he wants to elevate the finished product.
Nice idea, sure, but I've heard him talk, and I have actually talked to him and he comes off as a bit big headed, like he believes his own hype.
He did great things, but he is not doing anything of note now.
He is a great figure from the past, but currently he is almost grade z.
Remember Lon Chaney Jr. was a icon, but in the end he was slumming just like Savini.
Remember this, this is my opinion and I don't want to insult Savini fans but he's completely in a different category if you consider his work NOW.
Its like the Misfits back with Glenn Danzig then and the Misfits with Michael Graves now (well, up to a few years ago)...completely different animals, but still good in their own rights.
(For the record the Misfits will rock in any incarnation!)
ok, that's my rant...
