Batman: Arkham City - Page 10

The grapple boost is also your friend for a few trophies, allowing you to regain precious height without touching the ground.

The Grapple boost. Of course.

God! I am such a fucking idiot why do I keep forgetting these moves?

once you complete any one of the puzzles that has you gliding from wall to wall, all the rest are a piece of cake

71% complete.  Wrapped up all the side missions, and somehow managed to get every last riddler trophy.  Played a few challenge maps, but don't think I'll be doing many more.  Just not my thing.  Adios game, it's been fun.

Finally got peret free low achievvement. You don't use the batarang. You use the grapple pull plus slam move instead.

Beat the game...much tighter narrative than Asylum...but I agree it kinda wraps up Strange real quick...but since he isn't really a super villain it makes sense.

Dispatching the joker was good fun.

Without getting too spoilery...the sword combat peek that Rocksteady gave us was really really really cool to play.  I wish we could get more sequences like that.  Maybe a sign of things to come in the sequel?

After beating the game and the Catwoman sequence ending (also fun) I continued fucking around with riddler trophies for like an hour.  The trophies involving the charge gun moving balls around were way more fun than they should be.

I finally beat that freak Zsaz also...that was a nice little stage.

Trying to find deadshot's next clue (I guess this side mission is triggered by game completion rate?).  I am not exactly sure how to advance that or the identity thief side missions beyond the first encounters.

Oh and still, FUCK AUGMENTED REALITY TRAINING.

But... But FAYYY-zer...

You must play through the even more excruciating "Advanced" levels.

Not only are they an irre-SIS-tible bit of fun... How else will you be able to get that BATWING CHARACTER TROPHY.

You just have to find them. Like a needle in a city.

Easter Eggs you can find.

Hush. Azreal. Calender Man, Killer Croc.

I also saw a neon sign for The Black Canary Bar.

So I just faced off against Hugo Strange... how close am I?

Curious because I don't want the game to end, and only have completed 40% of the game.

Once Wonder Tower's done, you've got one total bitch of a stealth section involving snipers, and a boss fight. Thats it.

If you do nothing else yet, you'll end the game with about 43-44%. You're so not done yet.

You found taking out the snipers hard? I got through that rather easily, just went around in a circle taking them all out stealthily. I'm at around 81% myself I think. I just beat Freeze in my New+ game and am rolling right through it.

Yeah seriously, those snipers were easy as pie to get rid of.  Most of them are on rooftops in wide-open spaces, easy to get behind and take out.  The last two are on the ground, but you can drop into an alley sort of to their side in order to get rid of them.

As long as you tackle the snipers from the top down, they're not that difficult at all.

but does the game "end" or can I keep on playing after the final boss?

You can keep playing, and if you have the Catwoman dlc, you can freely switch characters at various points around the city.

that I do have, and you sir, just made my day.... THANKS!!!

I'm on the snipers now, and I think they're a total bitch. Hardest thing in the game for me by far. If I drop down on one, I get pinpointed and killed instantly. I wish Batman just fucking shot dudes.

There was a pretty good Punisher game on the last gen of consoles...

just sneak around and grapple up. ive noticed that if you grapple to a ledge or roof with anyone on it, Batman wont automatically pull himself up. so you can wait till youre out of view and just silent takedown each one

Grapple onto ledges behind the snipers, sneak up, and take them out.  There are angles where you won't be seen.  The two on the ground are cake if you use the disruptor to cancel out their rifles.

Loving this game. Just got by the Mr. Freeze part, and am taking a break from the plot to explore the city. I also downloaded the Nightwing pack last night and played through some challenges because, well, I love Nightwing. It would be nice if they made a third game where you got to switch between characters a bit more: I'd love to play through story sections as Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Huntress, etc. I love that this game series embraces the idea of Batman as the master of a modern kung fu clan.

If they didn't do that, I probably wouldn't find much to complain about. These games just play so well.

A lot of people I know actually groaned when Robin appeared, which annoyed me greatly. If anything I not only agree with seeing the whole extended Batman-Ninja-Clan, but would love to see a lot more interaction in the field between Batman and his allies. Mostly because he's a much better character when he's bouncing off somebody.

I would love to online coop this with one or more of  the other characters.  I dont care if I am always Batman and you are always Batman, but we look like Robin to each other's screen.

Actually, when you explain the snipers that way, they became super easy. Thanks, all!

Now the story's over. Great game.

Barring any shenanigans I should finish up with City this week. I have one last row of campaign challenges for Batman (the Master ones) and while I'm assuming I'm going to hate them a lot I should finish them up by Thursday, then the only things I won't have are the challenges for all the dlc but I'm not too pressed on those really.

or the damn batarangs did damage

Finished up. Not really that big on the challenger rooms or the like, but the game itself is pretty amazing. loved the side missions and random 'violence' to fight.

Next up, MW3 and Skyrim. Sweet.

And the PC version got delayed another week. Sweet.

First off, Arkham City is awesome: The fantastic gameplay and amazing set pieces are enough to ensure that. But the story is definitely on shakier ground this time around, and I've got questions after finishing it.

Spoilers galore from here on out ...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

So, here's what I think happened:

-- Joker is sick with Titan poisoning.

-- At some point BEFORE Batman develops the cure, the Joker fakes his own recovery by having Clayface impersonate him. It seems like he does this to (a) re-establish his hold on Arkham City and (b) to fuck with Batman.

-- Then once Batman produces the cure, Harley steals it and turns it over to Joker/Clayface because, apparently, Harley is not privy to the Joker's switcheroo. Which is stupid because if the real Joker ordered her to steal it (which one would assume), you'd think he'd make sure it would get back into his hands.

-- Clayface is a huge dick and doesn't immediately turn the cure over Joker, who remains sick and dying. (And maybe Clayface is the one who gags and ties up Harley? Hell if I know ...)

-- Batman shows up at the movie theater to fight Joker, discovers the truth ... and, well, everyone knows what happens from there.

That's the timeline of events I took from the game, but it's so narratively suspect that I'm wondering if I missed something. Does anyone have a better explanation of the series of events leading up to the game's finale?

Not really. The plot's kinda sorta not put that well together at all.

I THINK this is how it goes.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Harley steals the cure, gets jacked by Talia, who ties her up, who then gets jacked by Clayface rolling deep with Joker.  Joker wants to do his immortal thing, fuck cures, wants to piss in Bat's face while doing it.  Bat fucks up Clay and before Joker can get all immortal, gets crushed by Bats and is such a douche that he misses out on the cure.

Also, Harley is pregnant.

Hmm, that sequence of events does make a little more sense than mine. (Especially since you figured out how to properly fit Talia in.) Still ridiculously convoluted, but I think we're getting somewhere.

I knew I shouldn't go digging around because I'd only get pissed. Apparently both delays to the PC version were made just because.

Well, sorry Bats. If WB wants to treat me as a second class citizen I'll treat this as a second tier game and wait for a Steam sale.

I've got this game now and generally loving it. I like that everytime I want to beat the crap out of goons, they are always not too far away. 48 hit combo so far but I'm sure I can do much better than that.

All these fun looking new games are distracting me from the fact I could just play this and be fine for the rest of the year, probably. But no way I don't get tempted away. These challenge rooms are infuriating, in a good way.

I agree, Batman as the super-grim Lone Wolf has been played out in the last couple of decades. In both games I found his interaction and dialogue with his allies like Oracle, Gordon, Alfred and Robin  a lot more interesting than him interacting with any of the villians -- the extent of those is almost always boiled down to Batman growling, "Stop doing criminal stuff or I WILL STOP YOU/FIND YOU/END THIS"

Also with the League of Shadows and the Ra's Al Ghul's role in AC, I would love to see them take over the lead-villain role for the next game. That way we can have Ra's' army of ninja assassins vs. the extended Bat-family to give us an excuse for even more playable characters in the story.

Free Batman Inc. skin for Arkham City tomorrow!!!

Also, here's a trick for old school gamers like me:

At the main menu, after choosing your save slot, press left, left, down, down, left, left, right, up, up, down. Then all the costumes you've bought or otherwise acquired will be available to use in the campaign without having to beat it first. Awesome.

Cool, I'll get it but I don't know if I'll even play AC again, I've 100%ed the game except for the DLC challenge rooms and I don't feel like doing those. Perhaps they'll actually release story related DLC though, there's always hope!

I got the game as a Christmas present, and just wrapped it up this morning. It was a good break from Skyrim, but I didn't love it. I wasn't a big fan of the kitchen sink approach from Arkham Asylum, and it was even more severe this time around. Villains like Mad Hatter and Zsasz are shoehorned in, adding nothing to the storyline, while interesting villains like Two-Face that could have provided some awesome set pieces and side-stories show up briefly and never again.

The combat, which was a highlight for Asylum, is much clunkier this time around. I know the stakes have been upped, but the inclusion of shields and armored enemies -- oftentimes mixed with enemies carrying guns -- broke up the rhythm of combat, and made a lot of the bigger fights less enjoyable. The fun of playing as Batman is taking down huge numbers of enemies at a time, and the challenge comes from seeing how many you can take down in a row, and how creative you can be while doing it. Getting your ass kicked by a dozen thugs two or more times in a row is not quality Batman time.

The highlight of this game for me is, honestly, the inclusion of Catwoman as a playable character. I'd be angry and feel ripped off if I had paid for her playable sections because there's not much there, but I actually found her more fun to control and play with than Batman.

Finally, the ending of the game irked me. I'm not a purist by any means, and I haven't read a Batman comic since borrowing The Dark Knight Returns from a friend in high school, but I'm annoyed when what's basically "extended universe" material takes such huge creative license with iconic characters. The ending felt weak and fan-fic-ish, much like killing off Chewbacca in the Star Wars novels. All in all, I'd say I feel about this franchise the way I feel about Assassin's Creed. The first game was different and interesting -- sometimes very good, but almost always worth playing. The sequel expanded on some good things and wore thin some others. But ultimately, I feel burnt out of them. If either of them want to get me interested again, they'll have to bring something very new to the table.

I want a Scarecrow game... ...nothing trumps his moments in the 1st game.

The game is fucking fantastic. Jacob Singer, thank you man. I love the open world aspect of it, just flying around, overhearing goons before beating them up. Beating up 10+ guys in a row in an elegant way. All those Riddler riddles and hints for dozens of villains. Just having a Black Canary bar or finding Calender Man is a sign these guys truly appreciate what they're doing.

I so hope the third one will have playable vehicles. They need to include the batmobile. And it needs to have a coop mode.

But what about Hamill? Didn't he retire speaking the Joker after City? I can't imagine a third one without the Joker (although Two-Face has to have a bigger role next time).

You're mightily welcome, Mr. Myers.

Taking a break from Skyrim to replay this one. I blew through the main story the first time around and didn't really do any of the side stuff. It just felt weird having all that stuff to do after the main campaign, and sometimes the characters would reference events from the main story out of sequence or something. Just felt sort of weird.

Are you doing this on the Plus Mode? I was debating spinning up the old disc and do that. I have completed everything in regular mode except the Catwoman stuff. After playing as Batman, her fighting style is so different, I end up getting my ass kicked.

Decided not to tackle plus mode, I'm going through on normal. I literally rushed through the story so compulsively that I neglected to actually get any good at the combat and whatnot. I'll probably give plus mode a try one of these days, though. This game is just that good, even if I wish there were story campaigns for Robin and Nightwing.

Play plus mode, it's a completely different experience. They way you tackle the combat is on another level. Hard as fuck initially, but even more satisfying when you decimate a room full of goons.

If I may fanwank, the ending is backwards. As much as I love Hamill, ending with The Joker completely undermines the main story of Strange's plan.

The climax is the only thing about this game that isn't A+

I agree, and having played the game a few times now, the story feels a little bit of a miss. AA was simple in terms of storyline and focused on a universal known villain of the Joker. AC has to juggle Ghul, Strange, and the Joker. Along the way, characters like Two-Face get used up rather quickly, even if you have the Catwoman DLC. Not to mention I think the Scarecrow intros in AA were some of the best bits of both games.

That said, Arkham City is still a very solid A- in my book. It has very easy to pick up gameplay, and you get to be Batman beating up a shark!

Totally hope they attempt this next go-round. Having more Bat-family members about can only help Batman be a little less boring.

The story is basically garbage, and probably one of the worst single elements in the game. I think I tuned out before the penguin section and never looked back.

If the gameplay and presentation of this game wasn't so fucking wonderful I'd probably be picking at it a lot more.

Yeah AC is nowhere near as tight as the first. I suppose that's a hazard of making it more open world. The kitchen sink approach wasn't wise and it just dilutes all the characters. Two Face really got the short straw and can't figure out why he was relegated to little more than a cameo.

But as Lauren says, the gameplay more than makes up for it. The combat is utterly unparalleled.
