Kings of Leon will release their fifth album Come Around Sundown, the follow-up to their breakthrough LP Only By the Night, on October 19th. The 13-track disc was recorded in New York with producers Angelo Petraglia and Jacquire King. On their current North America tour, the band has been giving fans a preview of their new material, performing new tracks tentatively titled "Mary," "Radioactive," "Immortals" and "Southbound."

On my birthday! If the album sucks, I'm going to have to kill you, Followill.

Okay, not really. Just don't make it suck. I still kinda like the last one after waffling heavily on it for about a year.

Yeah, they've also given fans a glimpse at what utter pussies they are. Pigeon-shit-pussies, and nothing more.

Kings of Leon are one of those bands I know have a massive following but I've never personally met a fan of theirs.

To get back on topic, I've kind of liked one single from each of their albums thus far so I'm hoping to be vaguely nonplussed by material off the new album.

The new material that they played live sounds pretty solid. More organic and spontaneous than most of the tunes from their last album.

Still LOVE Because of the Times. If the new disc is as strong as that, I'll be a happy camper.

Definetly a fan, I think more a fan of the first few albums. "Sex on Fire" is just too overly played now that it annoys me far more than it should. It has been interesting to watch this band evolve from the first album though.

Did the last album really break Kings of Leon out into the mainstream in America? As the band always said that they had a bigger following in the UK than back home, when they had their first few albums out.

Yeah, for some reason, Only by the Night struck like lightning in the U.S. I still don't get the appeal, as it's by far their weakest effort. It's also their most boring and mundane, so that might have something to do with it.

I guess it's also about the timing. 'Sex on Fire' and 'Use Somebody' definitely were huge success stories when it came to single releases.

My appreciation for Only By The Night seems to be directly proportional to how drunk I am at the time.

Awesome first single. Huge thumbs up from me:

'Radioactive'

When they were talking about the direction of their upcoming album, I got my hopes up that they'd return to the sound of 'Aha Shake Heartbreak', which is still the only KOL album I unabashedly love (to the point where it's in my top10 for the '00s).
But this sounds like still more channelling of early U2, and that just doesn't do much for me I'm afraid. It's a pity cause it's a band I have a lot of sympathy for, a lot of goodwill to like what they're doing. But I'd just like to see some 'twang' return, if that makes any sense. I know they hated to be pigeonholed as a 'southern' band, but the mix of that with an updated guitar sound is what made me warm up to them in the first place.

Still curious about the rest of the album though.

I dig Aha Shake Heartbreak, but it's not aging as well as I thought it would. Feels too one-note and once the novelty wears off, there's not enough meat left to chew on when it comes to the songwriting.

What I really, really love about this new tune is it feels soulful and honest. Not cold and stinted, like the majority of the last album.

Listening to this more and more, I'm realizing Kings of Leon will never reach the same heights of the truly great rock bands. But that's fine and dandy. I still like 'em.

Weird you should say that, as I still consider it to be one of those albums that is filled with crafty & short vignette songs that work perfectly as a whole, and don't outstay their welcome. Sound is consistent, but varies within that frame with the uptempo energy outbursts and more contemplative stuff nicely balanced out. Also I think Caleb's voice is the most idiosyncratic there, which I admit can be a bad thing for people who don't like it.

Ah well, diff'rent strokes I guess.

I haven't listened to the song, but is Caleb still squawking like a Chocobo?

Video for Radioactive is up on the official website, and while the song is OK, the video is AWFUL. AWFUL!

First listen is very favorable. Great melodies all over. And Caleb's singing is back on track.

Too bad they didn't get any same day Rock Band treatment. Dig the album so far. Mary is owning my ears at the moment.

Yeah, Mary is fucking great. I'm going to burn myself out on it soon. This album's pretty good y'all

I gotta agree with you on this, Ray. I accidentally clicked Aha Shake Heartbreak yesterday while on the bus, listened to the first three songs, and ended up switching to this. It's fine and a fun album and great to throw on at parties or whatnot, but damn the songwriting ain't good.

I'm digging the shit out of "Pyro."

Yeah, that's the tune that's hit me the hardest so far. But there are lots of highlights.

Some of the critical backlash that I'm reading is pretty senseless. Guess it's the typical backlash of bringing someone down after they've achieved a great amount of success, and it's probably happened to all of my favorite artists during one time or another. Only by the Night actually makes more sense in hindsight after hearing this album, even though it's not exactly a favorite of mine.

Haven't seen them live. Hopefully a future show is in the cards for me.
Yeah, it's a pretty cohesive album. They're just bitching that there isn't a breakaway single, but I think it's really good.
I'm listening to the track "Radioactive" and when Caleb starts wailing about "Its in the water," I know I'm being manipulated, and I know how decidedly manufactured it all is, but I have to just give in. It's good, but its too early for me to rank the album.

After listening to this a few times... I think it's a tremendous album. I love every single song on it, and that's a real rarity for me.

I think "The Immortals" is the greatest end credits song to a Western I made up in my head ever.
