Exploding Head Syndrome

Anyone ever experienced or dealt with this? I don't seem to get it anymore, but I had a bad bout with it years ago. I never even considered it as something "real," but a co-worker sent me that link almost as a joke yesterday like, "look at this weird shit."

I was shocked when I read it and realized THAT'S the weird shit that was plaguing me a couple of years ago.

I just recently started hearing gunshot-like noises that snap me out of sleep, it's really starting to piss me off. I had no idea this was a real thing, and that it had such an awesome name.

I get migraines. What a comparably boring name for a condition.

Apparently, the name was well worth the hassle though. I hope it comes back so that I can declare, "my Exploding Head Syndrome's just acting up again."

Going forward, Migraines will be known as "cranial fucking knife bursts from hell".

Thankfully not only don't I have this. until I woke up from my nap and checked CHUD I'd never even heard of it

Do dream sound effects count, BTW? Obviously sometimes in dreams loud stuff happens

No, this is like literally wake up screaming because it feels like your head just exploded. For me, it's unrelated to what's going on in my dream; it pulls me out of the dream.

Ah, intriguing and unfortunate. Sorry you have to deal with that, Joey Pants

I've been through several atom bomb explosions, and while the experience can be loud and painful and terrifying, I usually remain asleep.

EDIT: I decided this was not the place to share my dream I just had since it did not involve EHS

EDIT 2: It occurs to me that EHS could be the result of sinus troubles that your brain is trying to integrate into a dream?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND sigged.

Is this in any way related to the ringing I get in my ears sometimes when I'm awake?
Huh. I get this when I'm dozing off sometimes, not when I'm actually full on asleep in bed. I figured it was just some kind of chemo side-effect.

I used to have cluster migraines in High School. They were so bad that I passed out from the stress.

After I had a supra orbital nerve block I started getting this. It's not really an explosion, but more of a shock in my head. It also messes with my inner ear or something because it always makes me feel like I'm falling (which made watching Inception fun).

It doesn't happen all the time, but I'd say it average at least twice a week.

The voices tell me this isn't real and you guys might be fucked.
Wow, I've been going through this for a few months now. It occurs almost every night. Very interesting. Thanks!

Very interesting. I get it at least once a week, I didn't know it had such an awesome name!

It kind of sucks though. I can't get back to sleep afterwards.

That occurred to me too, but it would result in a time out. Check the NEW RULES

I think all boring sounding ailments should be renamed. From now on my Gall Stones shall be called "Pain Balls that really fuck up your day."

Thanks for posting this, joeypants. This started happening to me a couple of years ago, and like others here I had no idea it was an actual phenomena. I'm closing in on 50, and virtually anything my body does these days I chalk up to being an old fart. It's nice to know that weird head noise is not necessarily a harbinger of a coming stroke.

No, that's more how it happened with me, Gabe. Oddly it was only when I took naps on the couch, which might lend credence to the inner-ear thing (i.e. my position being so unique/different from my bed).

It felt like right after I finally really dozed off/out, this horrible and insanely loud snapping sensation started right in the bridge of my nose and instantaneously expanded outward to a deafening bang that felt like... well, my whole head was exploding. A little like someone just hit me really fucking hard with a bat right in my nose while simultaneously shooting me in the face with a shotgun.

For those who never had this, for me at least, this isn't like "oh, I dozed off and dreamed someone shot me," etc. It feels external or "real" while you're in the dream or whatever. Much like how an alarm clock intrudes on your dream or something. It feels like it's something real from the outside coming and interrupting your sleep.

Great, I have to worry about this happening now too?

It's nothing to really worry about, it's just scary as hell.
nothing when i fall asleep, but I have had cases of hearing a loud buzzing while awake that no one else can hear.
The closest I get to this is a sudden ringing sound out of the blue. It's not unlike the way your ears ring after hearing a really loud noise. I could be reading a book in a quite room and then is dawns on me that all ambient sound just cut out. Then the ringing starts and fades away until my hearing is back to normal a minute or two later.

I always thought it was one of the hairs in my inner ear giving up and dying, for whatever reason.

This thread has scanners.gif written all over it.

Sometimes I get a slight noise in my ear, like I'm picking up a radio frequency or something.

I have a "sequence of relaxation" for similar (and less hurtful) situations. I hate staying awake so I force myself to sleep again.

How do you do that? Such a technique would be invaluable to many people including myself. I have many sleep difficulties, just not EHS

Kinda like meditation but the trick is I only use it if I am very anxious and awake in the middle of the (cold) night. Normally I just eat late and go to bed watching some TV

I heard of Exploding Head Syndrome a couple of years ago... I'd been experiencing this for a few years: within an hour of falling asleep, I'd hear a loud knock (like a hard knuckle on a wooden door) and a flash of light that would wake me up. I haven't experienced the sound or light in a couple of years, but lately I have been waking up suddenly within an hour of falling asleep. I believe it to be stress related: I've started a new supervisor job recently and when I was experiencing the noise and light, I was working an older job at a place that was losing business contracts and we all knew was going to close within 2 years.
