Secret Cinema

Secret cinema is a mystery film night they do in London which acts as both a nice excuse to see a classic film with like minded folk, but also serves as a piece of live theatre. Actors are hired to play participants in the film world and are in-character in the bar, etc and you are encouraged to dress accordingly.

From what I can gather they never explicitly state what movie you're going to see until you get there, you just have to figure it out. Last month's was Blade Runner and a mutual friend went and had a blast.

I've been asked to help figure out what this next month's event is from the teaser info and I'm a bit stuck so would appreciate some help. Here's the tease:

"Do you want to be part of the uprising? Let us be great again...
Secret Cinema, in partnership with Windows Phone, will take place on Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th September somewhere in London.
We are looking for the world's journeymen, fighters, rebels, artists, musicians and dreamers who do not fear the dark of the nights or the heat of the midday sun.
Stay quiet, only whisper amongst yourselves, and look for secret paths amongst the streets and alleyways from where you are from. "

I keep thinking Del Toro but that might be because I'm so excited about In the Mountains of Madness I can think of little else!

Just got my ticket- no idea on the description though...

Mad Max 2. Just a guess.

I'm definitely going to go to one of the nights too. I went to the Blade Runner one (which was ace!) and had guessed that one right - although the email sent to ticket holders giving location details gave such obvious clues I'd have eaten my synthetic snake if I was wrong. Having said that, one of my friends was still arguing it was going to be the Fifth Element right up until someone 'scanned' his eyeball in the queue for the Skytours shuttle. Or coach, if you wanted to be pedantic.

So, what I'm saying is this:- hold fire before you start making a Road Warrior or Humungus costume on my say so until there's more to go on. I'd hate to turn up as the Feral Kid and it turns out they're showing Weekend at Bernies, or something.

God, these things are infuriating to figure out. A lot of people are guessing Lawrence Of Arabia, which is a possibility- I did think Apocalypse Now, but that may have been more hope than anything.....

yeah I know man, the reason I'm thinking about Del Toro is because:

"journeymen, fighters, rebels, artists, musicians and dreamers"

pretty much sums up the composition of the International Brigades in the Spanish civil war. In Devil's Backbone the ghost story takes place at night whilst arguably the true horror happens under the midday sun. I'm wondering if that film has enough love to satisfy people who've paid £30 for a film they haven't seen before. Hope so though!

What's your reasoning for the movies above? (Mad Max 2, Lawrence of Arabia, etc)

Here's the latest teaser:

Secret Brethren,
The rebels stormed the telegraph system. Many more of you tried to get message to us...
Leaders from the north, south, east and west have got word to us that over 7000 of you have joined the uprising so far....
Be part of the revolution here. Let us be great again...

Bedouin clothing, bring a rug, cushions, and a drum if you've got it. Gotta be Lawrence?

These seem like great fun, and insanely detailed in their approach. Somehow I was expecting a lower production value, but this looks extremely well thought out. Must citytrip to London for this in the near future..

Hell yeah, I went and loved it. From seeing the camels in the park, to charging up the hill storming the palace, to the Arabian market, it was pretty awesome- will post pics when I get them uploaded. Anyone else?

Sounds fantastic!

Fuck it, I'm going next to the next one.

Now having committed I bet it's going to be a room full of sweaty people wearing nappies and gurgling at Look Who's Talking Too....

Loads of people pissing and moaning on Facebook- Too many people, film too long, floor was hard queues too long blah blah blah- Fuck those people. A guy dressed as Lawrence getting led through Alexandra Palace on a horse is fucking awesome. People were singing along with the score, trying to sell their partners for goats, and it was just a ride to be there- even getting there was hilarious, getting the tube from miles away in costume. I'm expecting some sort of horror theme next, which could be incredible.

It does indeed sound fantastic. And nuts to the people moaning. People moaned about the Blade Runner showing; that the people re-enacting the rooftop fight was distracting. Stupid people will moan about anything. Really wish I could've gone. My wife is worth like, three goats. Dammit. Plus I've never seen it on a cinema screen.

Secret Cinema - November 2010

Just got an email with the first clue for the new one:

'Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again....'

That song's in The Graduate, right?

Well, it's in Watchmen, too, which would seem to offer more opportunities for costumes and such, but not sure I'd exactly call it a "classic."
