Okay, I think I'm good.

It looks like a Simpson's satire of an action film premise.

If I were Kevin Dunn, everytime I came in, did my Kevin Dunn thing I always do and did it well, I'd say "The dishes are Dunn," upon concluding a scene.

There's a pun for ya, David.

Ummmmm, Denzel and Tony Scott are just one step away from
direct-to-tv/dvd movies now it seems:

I'm not sure if Speed meets The Wages Of Fear is something I really want to see.

But I also have a feeling that this is meant to be Scott's trilogy capper for vehicular buddy flicks after Top Gun and Days Of Thunder. He cut down on the homo eroticism this time around.

Pity.

For a second I thought I was watching a remake of Runaway Train.

"We've just 150 students on a Field Trip..."

Christ. Shouldn't Eric Roberts be in this?
Sure it looks cheesy as all hell, but Tony Scott + Denzel = me pre-ordering my tickets.

It also looks like Scott is literally recycling the same flipping cop car from Pelham.

The shot of the military firing automatic weapons at the train is fucking amazing.

I remain optimistic because with a premise like this, it seems possible that any action sequences won't be blurry messes of shaky cam nonsense where you can't tell the geography of the scene. Then again, this is Tony Scott. I'm sure he can find a way to make a train going a single direction on a railroad confusing and incoherent through the power of his POWER-EDITING.
Boy, this just has "Pitched in 1995 in the Wake of Speed" written all over it, doesn't it?
There's just something so bonkers about this. Really feels like some sort of parody, right down to the train full of adorable school children facing impending death. If only this were called "Train: The Movie".

And is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling idea for this movie was started by one writer saying to another, "One train leaves Chicago, heading for New York at 70 mph at 9PM, another train leaves New York, heading for chicago at 65 mph at 9:30PM. The first train is loaded with enough Petrochemicals to make Chernobyl look like DisneyRus, and, stay with me here, Has. No. Driver."

He was able to do that in his last movie about Trains.
I don't see why this one will be any different.
That train is gonna smash the shit out of anything parked on the tracks!!!

I like the cast, and I like Tony Scott for the most part and the premise is silly enough. I'm sold.

That train was not in motion. But I also didn't see it, so you're probably right.

How ironic that the runaway train hits every railroad crossing that seems to have had some sort of accident on it.

The only reason to see this is Denzel being Denzel. I don't know if that will elevate it to worth it though.

Tony can make anything incoherent. Even scenes where a train is just sitting there.

There's a crappy RUNAWAY TRAIN sequence at the end, though.

Anyone have any idea what "true events" this is supposedly inspired by?

Just found some guy posted this on the Collider.com comments:

Runaway train stopped after uncontrolled 2 hours

ETA: Tony Scott is probably one of my bigger director guilty pleasures, and I'm ashamed to admit I'll probably try to see this opening weekend. He's filming a movie with Javier Bardem, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham and Christopher Walken here in Puerto Rico in the Fall but I'll be in NYC by then... damnit!!

I'm a sucker for Scott + Washington, so I'm on board!
By any rights I should find this movie utterly ridiculous, but I keep getting suckered in by the fact that its protagonists are everyman characters, which is becoming a mindboggling rarity these days.

I saw CRIMSON TIDE for the first time the other week. I liked it well enough. Good plot and cast helped overcome the ADHD direction. Wolfgang Peterson used a Steadicam to follow crew members through his sub set in long unbroken shots, in order to give you a feeling of the claustrophobia and unique conditions they faced -- not just in their daily lives, but in the midst of a crisis situation. CT was full of shots that were clearly being taken from outside the set, using pull away walls ETC, and the frenetic camera work kind of squandered some of the tension that should have been very easy to capture in a sub movie

So, while this is an interesting concept and I like the cast, I don't have my hopes up that it will be anything special. I'm afraid Scott is going to ruin the natural atmosphere of a train car the same way he screwed with the nuclear sub all those years ago.

PS PELHAM 123 was really awful, and devoid of thrills (IMHO). I enjoyed CRIMSON TIDE but his recent career shows that perhaps Scott is in a bit of a rut. If he can make a movie that's a solid B thriller like CT, I'm willing to call that a win at this point.

I'm a complete Scott/Denzel whore so I'll be on this like shit on Velcro.

Better title: TRAINING DAY

Also made incoherent by an odd editing decision that makes the resolution of that runaway train sequence completely confounding. Spoiler warning: Why does the train stop? Who stops it? The fat asshole at the control room was pretty set in his ways, wasn't he?

Here's hoping that in Unstoppable, we are able to at least surmise how the train is stopped.

This looks enjoyably ridiculous.
I'd rather rent The Cassandra Crossing and skip this one. Didn't TCC feature people being impaled by rail tracks?

Crimson Tide contained ADHD direction?

Yeah, definitely. Probably one for the cheapo Tuesday at my local cinema.

I'm pleased they got the obligatory Tony Scott trademark of a copcar spinning through the air after crashing in there

Seriously. As a Scott whore this is so wildly wrong. Scott didn't develop his current editing suite until Enema of the State.

You know, I was thinking about that too. I really did dig the blue-collar vibe of the trailer.

I'm a huge Tony Scott supporter (I got tons of shit for drafting Man on Fire in the Action draft) but this like his last few movies just looks so damn dumb and anti-fun that it hurts.

It's like nobody watches Jaws or The French Connection anymore. I haven't seen Scott's Pelham remake but I want to, entirely due to the fact that once again Denzel is playing against type as a pudgy workin' joe.
If you're a proud supporter of uber manic Travolta like I am then Pelham will be right up your alley.
The Pelham remake is actually not bad and works well enough despite itself, thanks mainly to a witty script and good work from the cast. It's an entertaining film... This one probably will be too. But it just looks so fucking stupid.
I had forgotten about PELHAM. I wish I hadn't remembered it just now. Awful in every way, especially Revolta's horrid overacting. The one Scott/Washington misfire in the canon (and yes, I'll cop to liking DEJA VU).
