Courtesans, Prostitutes, Concubines - Oh my!

And the movies about them.

Courtesans and those women in similar positions through civilization have always fascinated me. Equally dependent on their sexual charms and quick wit, they represent a conundrum: In being involved in what is essentially gussied up prostitution, they are able to maintain a greater degree of independence and often intelligence than women of a higher class. Typically, films about them tend to be chick flicks, as in films rarely focus solely on the lurid aspects, and more about the sort of struggle they go through in maintaining such a precarious existence. So I'll be composing my own little list of films here to keep track and maybe introduce some films for ya'll. If you can provide your own contributions, by all means!

1. The Sea is Watching
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ohmv--8vRTE
Directed by Kei Kumai, Screenplay by Akira Kurosawa
Set at around 19th Century Japan in the Red Light district. It follows the fictional exploits of a small brother comprised of four women, focusing primarily on Miss Kikuno and O-Shin. It's a chick flick by Kurosawa, despite the direction credit being taken by Kumai. Kurosawa's script was largely unchanged, and he had storyboarded the entire film before his demise. The trailer blows, but it is a lovely, charming film. It's a bit smaller in scope than his samurai films, but it retains the trademark nature parallels.

Sex: Just a little. Bit of rape, bit of prostitution. Little to no nudity.
Bechdel Test: Passed.

2. Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_dmPO5R8F4
Directed by Mira Nair, Screenplay by Mira Nair and Helena Kriel
Set in sixteenth century India, this plays more like a fable than anything else. Notable for introducing Indira Varma to audiences, who would later achieve greater fame as Niobe from ROME, and starring Naveen Andrews as the Prince/King. Of course, the focus is really on the Princess Tara and the servant girl Maya (Varma) and as the title states, the Kama Sutra (Or Lessons of Love). It concerns love both sensual and erotic, and features many tasteful but explicit scenes. It's a lush film, the costumes are gorgeous, and it abstains from any Bollywood cheesiness.

Sex: Quite a bit. Homosexual scene between the two male leads, more explicit lesbian scene between Tara and Maya, and plenty of erotic heterosexual scenes.
Bechdel Test: Passed, surprisingly enough

3. Dangerous Beauty
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wsixHWEzhk
Directed by Marshall Herskovitz, Screenplay by Jeannine Dominy (Based on the Novel by Margaret Rosenthal)
So far the only Western/European film on the list. Catherine McCormack as the woman Veronica Franco (A real woman, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veronica_Franco), one of the Venetian 'cortigiana onesta'. This plays more like your standard film, and I think it's probably the lesser of the three so far. Also Rufus Sewell, and Fred Ward. It's clearly one of those 90's costume dramas. It is small in scope, and fairly...standard, I think is the best way to put it. But as it focuses on the fascinating world of Venice during the Renaissance, it's not completely unworthy of a watch. (When I say 90's costume dramas, I mean to put it in the ranks of The Man in the Iron Mask -which came out the same year- The Three Musketeers...etc. There seemed to be a resurgence of those sort of smallscale period flicks flicks in the late 90s. What brought that on?)

Sex: Tasteful and standard. Granted, this is the one I've viewed the least often, so I can't remember too much.
Bechdel Test: I'm pretty sure this is the first one that fails.

More to come. I'm going to rack my brain and look through some of the Chinese flicks. I'm thinking Raise the Red Lantern by Yimou might be next on my list.

Does MOULIN ROUGE count? Satine explicitly calls herself a courtesan in the film, though I'm not sure this is the kind of film you're wanting for the list.

Kenji Mizoguchi's Sisters Of The Gion I remember as being a very bleak, sad movie about two geisha sisters, one traditional and loyal, one westernized and distrustful of men. The latter's distrust is vindicated to a quite spectacular degree, if I recall correctly. It's a very tragic movie, with some grim b&w cinematography, and hardly glamorous, but it's a good film.

I saw this film recently, as part of the FILM MOVEMENT subscription series. It was fairly depressing, but good. Might want to look into adding that to your list WW!

Y'know, I talked to Cuchulain about the very same. I don't really think so, while she's the lead, the focus is far and away not so much about the specific world she inhabits as a 'courtesan,' but more about Christian's journey through it. Granted, Satine flings the word courtesan around quite a bit, I mean, I ain't saying she a gold digger, but she aint looking for no broke....

Yeah, more prostitute than courtesan.

Using Japanese terms to describe it, I'm looking "Floating World" pictures. As soon as I recover from the removal of these hellbeggotten tonsils, I'll be netflixing a bit.

ETA: Thanks for the suggestions, folks!

Damn you Darkmite, we don't talk 'bout Memoirs round these parts. I hates it, I does.

I'll be putting up an aside some of the ones you've mentioned, thanks!

Kamala in Siddhartha definitely qualifies. Even though it's not really about her, she is an important part of his journey to enlightenment and her role in society fits the bill.

If you haven't already, see Farewell My Concubine or Rouge.

I would suggest Escape from Brothel, but I get the feeling that's not the kind of movie you're looking for (I think it passes the Bechdel Test, sadly though it fails the NO NUDE KICKBOXING OR OTHER TRASHY/EXPLOITATIVE SCENES test)

I came in all ready to say "Farewell My Concubine" and Disciple beat me to it! Though I'm positive it fails the Bechdel test.

Raise the Red Lantern is great too, AND it passes the Bechdel test (though if I remember correctly, it fails on a surface viewing of the film).

And because Gong Li could probably be the queen of this thread...The Emperor and the Assassin. She's not the title character, but she's definitely the main character.

Yeah, Moulin Rouge still pisses me off- I knew this girl (I was already aware of her full-on tard status) who was 19, a virgin, and going around telling everyone she was a courtesan after she watched that goddamned movie. Her "courtesan activities" included making out and flashing her boobs for money.

Jesus, shit like that makes me hate my life. I'm done with the derail now, and I do apologise- back on track, I just want to add that I agree it's not about a courtesan so much as it's about more star-crossed lovers, and her status is just another hurdle in their attempt at being together. She could have been married to the Duke and have never been a hoebag, it would have still been the same deal.

You are all forgetting the ultimate movie in this regard, the cinematic masterpiece of our time... American Gigolo. I kid, I kid.

Have you seen Last Exit To Brooklyn, WW? Not sure if it fits what you're going for exactly, but it's pretty fantastic. One of Jennifer Jason Leigh's best performances; she's heartbreaking and tragic. Worth hunting down.

Seriously, though, this year's Chloe delves into the subject a bit. The film itself isn't amazing (it's interesting, though), but you might like it (especially if you like Atom Egoyan's previous films).
