HOPA quits job, is second popular meme of the week

We all know everyone loves the "sliding down the chute" guy's story, but I'd seen it put together with some kind of story about a "dry erase board" by people who said both stories made their day.

Well, mystery no more! Since it's as popular as the ther guy, I gave it its own thread as well:

Girl quits her job on dry erase board, emails entire office (33 Photos)

Warning: the girl in the photos is RIDICULOUSLY beautiful. It's stupid how hot she is.

Knee-jerk penis reaction aside, I love this! Funny as hell, creative, and all-around awesome. She and Jet Blue guy should open up some kind of business.

ETA: I put "HPOA" in the thread title to link it to the context, not to demean or generalize, JIC.

ETA #2: And I misspelled it, to boot! Grrrrrrr... oh, well, hope nobody thinks I'm talking about Native American discrimination.
She misspelled it on the eraser board the first time too. Did the boss pronounce it ho-pa? Maybe it means something else...

She's hot though, and I'd like a piece of her ass.

For some reason, I thought that said "she's real cute I'd adopt her" the first time I read it.

Ah, attractive ladies. No more epic than any other rant email sent and nowhere near as awesome as the inflatable slide aircraft exit.

The inclusion of 33 pictures of a pretty attractive woman are enough to bump it way up on Digg though. Oh the sorry state of the internet.
Kudos to her...and yup, thats a fine looking woman.
This HOPA/HPOA thing is confusing the hell out of me. Is that seriously a thing people say? And how would you even say that if it's spelled HPOA... Huh-poe-a?

EDIT: Urban Dictionary to the rescue, I guess people just spell it. Soooo.... there are seriously people out there who refer to people as H.P.O.A's in an unironic way? That's extremely depressing.

I got a job for... nevermind.

Fake. Presumably.

Or she's really good at taking professional photographs of herself.
Honest to god question. Is "hot piece of ass" really demeaning? English still isn't my first language, and I'm not really getting anything offensive out of it. I mean, it's not like "hot slut" or anything.
Piece of ass is very demeaning and dehumanizing.

A lesson learned!

Haha, it's objectifying, obviously. You sure as shit don't want to hear it from your boss.

Even your fake boss!

The lighting is pretty damn good in those shots. Eh, still a funny story...
"piece of ass" = piece of meat. yep, degrading.

Maybe Jake likes to roleplay Woody Allen with the ladies?
Why do people ever assume these memes are real? Next thing, you'll be telling me you believe that guy *really* made all those missing cat posters.

She's hot, real or not.

Personally, I feel uplifted and well-loved when called a piece of ass.

I had a hunch it was a fake, but I guess we'll have to let the latest new media sensation unravel itself.

Still, there's huge gaps in logic and the thing falls apart as being very petty. However, the petty natures leads me to believe the truthiness of it all.
Is it wrong that I came away from this thinking she was the moron who will never get hired again? Most bosses suck. If this is real, this is the exact wrong way to deal with situation.
All hoax. At least they had the decency not to drag it out for-damn-ever.
The Chive fooled the internet into thinking a pretty girl quit her job. What mind-bending prank will they think of next?
Jesus between this thread and facebook I'm shocked at how many people were suckered in by what is, at the end of the day, a crushingly obvious fake. Some people suck at teh intanet.
I've never before heard of a HOPA in my life. I am unsettled by the idea that people could use acronyms to slander you and you might not even be aware of it. Thankfully she was familiar with the term and got her revenge on this DiSpencer guy. I don't think I can be totally happy though given the fact that she stated her life goal was to become a stock broker*. Anyway, interesting story and creative way to be fired. I like the idea of using still photos so you can depict the emotions that should accompany each sentence of your resignation letter. This way you can definitively make clear your joy at leaving and how not at all bummed out you are about losing your job

*the last thing America needs more of

EDIT: A hoax? For crying out loud. What a dumb thing to make a hoax of, why not at least something cool like an alien sighting like Mr Welles?
EDIT: I maintain that that is still a cool way to quit your job though. With still photos you can perfect the emotion you want to express where as in a video or real life confrontation you might falter
post #25 of 53
I agree, Kate, innapropriate use of acronyms is really unsettling.

How anyone ever thought this was real is utterly beyond me.
My first fake-rep. I should've written a speech.
Devin shouldn't go to any Greek wedding whatsoever. They keep shouting HOPA! every 5 minutes or so.
So mean to tell me that most of what I read on textsfromlastnight.com could be fake as well?! Damn it!!!

I was suckered in because...

Give the world a break. It was a prank about some girl quitting her job. It's not like we all believed Mt Rushmore sprouted bat wings and flew away or something like that. This Misc Culture board is constantly linking actual true but outrageous stories, yet the fact that they are real is utterly beyond me. And most of those stories are incredibly tragic. So sue me. I wanted to believe a happy story was true and some cute girl got one over her asshole boss.

Besides, your disbelief is immaterial. What is important is that every man or woman reading this wants to take that girl to see Scott Pilgrim, just to watch her laugh and make faces like that. Preferably while sitting in our collective laps.

Other than the site originally publishing the article being known pranksters, the story seemed to be completely legit. If someone didn't know the history of the source, I don't see the implausibility.

But I guess what we don't understand is Joey can reason on a level far superior to us mere troglodytes. Joey can sniff out a hoax like a pig to truffles. He is uncanny. The only reason he didn't tell the world about Madoff was that we needed to be punished for our greed.
The girl is the kind of adorable that you could buy her as a non-actress. The bad news is she's the kind of adorable who's probably never going to make it as an actress. She looks like a really pretty waitress in LA., and the patience with which I would listen to her endless stories about the heartbreak of going on audition after audition would be infinite. Then I'd make her a dinner of comfort food to cheer her up.

Good for her getting her name out there, though. She's already got a couple facebook fan pages (one that says she's ugly, but hey).
I'm less baffled by how people could think it was real, but why so many people thought it was funny. It's not.
Unmasking the hoax further proves only one thing:

There are no girlz on teh Intarwebz.

Don't you get it? SHE'S CUTE!

Ha! That seems to be the gist of the whole thing. Though if we're gonna obsess over cute fake internet chicks, "Lonely Girl" wins.

In hindsight I'm kind of embarrassed I didn't deeply suspect it was fake, but I had no idea what thechive.com was and wasn't really paying attention to the source anyway. Nor is it a ridiculous idea in concept. And she was REALLY cute. That said, the oddly professional photography, her actress-y expressions and the mysteriously levitating whiteboard are all pretty obvious red flags now.

I did wonder how the fuck "garbage diSpencer" would be recognizable as a joke when said out loud. And who starts their "brokerage" career as an admin assistant. But whatever she was cute!

(Also, I don't care how liberating it was, I would have been pissed if someone blew up my inbox with 33 pictures before they left.)

Garbage dispenser was kinda funny. What was funnier was Kate thinking Spencer's name was Mr. DiSpencer.

I'm not a moron, that was an attempt at humor. I was writing his name like 'DiCaprio'

EDIT: But since you said it was even funnier than the joke itself then I guess that's a compliment?

I expressed pretty much the same sentiment while chatting about this to a friend.

"Oh... she's an aspiring actress? Eh... she's alright."

Which is ridiculous, but not necessarily false.

It's weird how the internet has made people so much more gullible.
Jesus Christ, guys. No need to take it so personal. I honestly wasn't even directing my comment at you all, but more at the flood of fucking people on my Facebook who've been reposting this thing raving, "OOOOH! PERFECT!!!!!"

a) it's not that funny
b) this thing had the stench of staged all over it (I mean, really. Sending THAT many pics to your office as you quit?)
c) That girl is fucking HOT. Hot hot hot. That kind of cute is right up my alley.
d) What Phil said
I bought it because it was unfunny.

Are they or was PT Barnum simply stating an essential human truism?

I just find it really convenient when someone comes in after it's been exposed as a hoax and says that it's "utterly beyond" them that anyone believed it.

By the time I read about it, sites were pointing out "oh, by the way, The Chive has fooled us before" so the skepticism was already there, but I don't blame anyone buying into it. It wouldn't have been all that difficult for any of us to pull off.
