Alex digs Johnnie To's latest, but not as much as he'd hoped to.

That poster seems really, really familiar.

Shame that the movie isn't as exciting as it could have been.

I mostly agree with Alex: it's good, at times even brilliant (mostly in the always stylish and lyrical shootouts, as per To's tradition) , but I was expecting much more. A lot of points seem underdeveloped, such as the memory loss gimmick that conveniently comes into play only when needed.

One bit I don't agree on is the dialogue. It sure is awkward and stilted, but the entire film is based on the interaction between men of few words that don't even share the same language. In my opinion it somewhat felt right.

As far as the cast goes, Anthony Wong is awesome as usual and we get Simon Yam at his slimiest ever. Hallyday is cool, not a great actor by any stretch but the right presence for this film. Still, it would've been fantastic if To actually managed to get his first choice for the leading role - Alain Delon. The man may be way past his prime but it would have been a nice throwback to his roles of the 50s and 70s, the name, implied backstory and mannerisms of Costello itself suggest this may be some sort of apocryphal reprise of his Jef Costello role.
