Alamo Rolling Roadshow

Did anyone see any films over the last few weeks that were brought to town by the Alamo Rolling Roadshow? I just saw Robocop in Detroit at a place called the Russell Industrial Center. It was screened in an old warehouse that is part of a larger industrial complex that has fallen into disuse, but has been transformed into artists spaces and performance venues. It was a perfect location to see that film and I imagine the other screening were sweet as well.

They even rented 2 Detroit cop cars and put the OCP logo on the side. Whenever Robocop was riding in a police car, they turned on the lights, bathing the rivets and steel beams in flashing blue and red. It was a nice touch, and I was excited to go to an event sponsored by the Alamo Drafthouse, as I wish I was living is Austen so I can go there all the time.

In San Francisco, they pretty much just set up the screen in Washington Square Park a couple hours early, and left people to show up with their chairs and snacks (and blankets-- it is summer in San Francisco, after all).

Tim gave a brief talk before starting Dirty Harry, and gave away some freebies, but that was pretty much the sole interaction with the audience. After that, they just showed the movie; great picture and sound quality, and a really fun evening.

I went. Could only stay for the first hour or so, but that was a DOPE as FUCK location they picked. Covered in graffiti tags and skateboarding ramps and grindables. Bought a On The Waterfront poster. Nearly squealed like a little girl when they suggested that there's a chance of an Alamo Drafthouse in NYC.

First time I ever saw a Blu-ray projected at an event. Man, it really does work. And a lot of enthusiasm from those Alamo people. The posters were beautiful but too expensive for me right now.

I truly wish they had set the screen up higher, though. From where I was sitting, the lower quarter of the screen was obscured by frustrated moving heads of people who couldn't read the subtitles anymore than I could. And it would be cool if they had a few people moving around to enforce good audience behavior. I got stuck around some shifty people who kept whipping out really annoying bright texting/iPhoning gizmos, as well as getting up and sitting down again.

I went to the Rocky-thon at the Philadelphia Museum of Art last week. That was an awesome event. They showed Rocky in 35mm but unfortunately there was a problem with the Rocky II print so they showed II and III on disc. It was still really cool though.

They had a cow leg hanging from a hook and a bunch of pairs of 4 ounce gloves so people could punch the beef, which was awesome and so much more fun and cathartic than you'd imagine. And then after Rocky 3, Tim had everyone come to the bottom of the steps and then we all raced back up to the top. Hundreds of people running up at the same time. It was just like Rocky II. An amazing capper to the event.

I also bought a Dirty Harry poster. Man is that spiffy.
