Stupid Gags That Always Make You Laugh

Inspired by the Martin Mull namedrop in the Bigfoot thread, I would have to pick Col. Mustard getting a faceful of ironing board in CLUE. It's such a basic, obvious bit of slapstick, but Mull sells it perfectly. Share your worn-thin jokes and scenes that somehow never fail to elicit a chuckle.

For me... TOP SECRET is loaded with them.

"I know a little German..." The combo of midget and lederhosen is guaranteed comedy gold in my book.

God, CLUE's full of awesome bits of slapstick. The candlestick falling on Tim Curry's head, trying to turn a doorknob that's actually a shower knob, the collision when everyone runs together at the top of the stairs, and the actual slapping after Michael McKean's incredulous, "Mrs. Peacock was a MAN?"

ETA: As far as actual, classic gags go you can always get me with a good spit take.

It may not be the best movie but this bit from George of the Jungle gets me every time... Bearers laugh at Lyle
post #5 of 56
"The Pink panther strikes again" kills me everytime with the meeting of Dreyfuss and Closseau at the Mental Institution.
Also, pretty much everything in "Kung Pow"..stupid as hell, but i cant help laugh my ass off..."Gopher-Chucks!" "cam mode" kills em everytime.

As far as Clouseau goes: "Does your daawwg baayt?"

And there are many, many ZAZ scenes that would fit. One fave- Goulet falls out the window, lands safely, brushes himself off, is mauled to death by random lion.

Nope, that lion wasnt random, he escaped when Drebin wrecked the zoo earlier ; its some sort of karma deus ex lion.

congrats, you just blew my mind

The all-time winner is the mirror cracking Indy under the chin in Raiders. When I was a kid every time we got to that scene we'd rewind it and watch that part over again about a dozen times.

Txs, but thats why the gag works; somehow, you know it all makes sense, even if you dont realize it at first....hell, i think there's evena line about some animals still loose in the city during the film.

My favorite might be the series of misfortunes that befall OJ in the beginning of The Naked Gun. The wet paint is the icing on a wonderful cake.

Ash backing a good 10-15 feet away from the door of the cabin in Evil Dead II, only to be surprised and tackled by the hillbilly suddenly leaping into frame.

UHF has a lot of really stupid ones I love as well. My favorite might be the simple act of tossing a turtle in the air and it sticking to the ceiling.

Oddly enough, the guy running and catching the tree traveling alongside the train is my favorite. Makes me laugh quite hard because it's so nonsensical.

I have to disagree, the gag worked for me even before. Just something very absurdly "Vegas" about Death by lion.

Only the lion kill in The Happening is funnier.

That part is fucking gold. Probably my favorite scene in the movie.

There were a couple of great gags Pixar threw in on their last two films. First was the dogs playing poker with bones for chips in Up, and the shot of Barbie walking away dressed in Ken's astronaut suit and Bookworm scoffing at it in Toy Story 3, which my friend and I were the only people who laughed at the scene in the theater.

But the one that takes the cake for me is in Nacho Libre. In no way a great, even good movie, but when Jack Black's scrawny ass chickenshit friend tossed the corn on the cob on the stick through the rival lucha libre's eye I lost my shit. Was laughing for minutes after that.

Hot Shots, Part Deux: The random soldier who gets shot and falls out of the tree yelling, "That's it! Good night!" Fucking slays me every time.
What happened to the other, very similar thread? It was active as recently as a few days ago.

I interpreted this thread as more of a "generic set up/joke that has appeared in multiple movies but you still find funny". Like a fella getting kicked in the testicles or something.

Nailed it.

I will add Jim Carrey coming out of the rhino's ass in Ace Ventura 2 as one of my all time favorites though. Just something about it kills me every. single. time.

Harbinger: Geronimo!
Rabinowitz: Geronimo!
Geronimo: Me!

I LOVED YOU IN "WALL STREET!"

Both get me every single time

The spit-take. There is an art to it, and when done well it never fails to kill me.

I'm a sucker for a great wide-eyed expression.

- The trucker in Naked Gun when he sees the learner driver giving him the finger.

- Harrison Ford pulling his face after "We...are going...to die!"

- And of course, Doc Brown's ridiculous expression when the model deLorean catches fire.

These are just a few of a myriad that make me laugh.

Extended from the Blazing Saddles thread: Mongo punching a horse.
Sideshow Bob stepping on rake after rake. It's the noise Kelsey Grammer makes that does it.
Really this thread is kinda owned by the Zuckers for me...

"What can you make of this Johnny?"
"Oh this? I can make a hat, I can make a broach, I can make a teradactyl"

"...and just where in the hell was I?"

Oh and this
My favorite gag of all the Naked Gun films is when Frank and Jane get intimate and by "practicing safe sex," it means wearing full-body size condoms (Titan brand). Never fails to make me explode laughing.

That movie owns this thread, the shit that happens, so many classics:

"They're not here for you. Weird Al Yankovic is on the plane."

Frank and Jane walking out of the movies amongst a dour, emotional crowd laughing and jumping with joy. The camera pans up and Platoon is on the marquee.

"I LUV U..."
"I love you too, Nordberg."

Khomieni's turban getting knocked off to reveal a pink mohawk, and Gorbachev's birthmark being cleaned off.

The other thing that kills me in the first one is, after Drebin royally fucks up his cover as Enrico Pulazzo (his "YA DA DA DA DA DA" of the song is classic too) they show that sports blooper reel, which includes among other things, a tiger mauling, a failed attempt to catch a ball that ends in him being "decapitated" (re: his head falling off a poorly rendered cadaver), and best of all, a Chevy Corsica driving through the middle of a game. Brilliant.

This, this and this. The whole baseball game scene is something I can watch over and over again and always get a laugh. My buddies and I still get a kick out of going to baseball games and randomly yelling," Look! It's Enrico Pulazzo!" between innings. Alot of people still get the reference. Drebin as the umpire calling strikes always get me. He begins so quiet and unsure and then in just a couple of pitches begins calling the strike before the ball even gets there. Love it.

DRUNKEN MASTER II's spit-take (when Wong Fei-hung presents the enormous "ginseng" root to his father's patient) kills me every time, without fail. I'm not sure who directed that scene* but they nailed the timing, and the sound effect in the original Golden Harvest audio mix (not the Miramax abomination) is perfect splattery wetness.

*Jackie Chan fired credited director Lau Kar-leung and did significant reshoots upon taking over direction of the film himself, hence the seemingly contradictory "A Jackie Chan Film" and "Directed By Lau Ka-Leung" credits. This is also why Andy Lau is so prominently billed for his very brief cameo - before Chan reworked the film, he had a larger part.

The gag where someone is getting equipped, and there's this montage where each piece of equipment, tie of a belt, tightening of a bolt gets the fast zoom-in effect. I believe it's done in a couple (if not all) of the Evil Dead movies, Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz, and I think I've seen it elsewhere. Even better when it goes on for a ridiculous amount of time.

Also, bazookas. Whether they be in a serious action movie or a cheesy one like BIG MONEY RUSTLAS, the use of a bazooka always makes me laugh even when it's not the intended purpose.
"My father went the same way." It's the steamroller that gets me.

Evidently, you haven't seen Scott Pilgrim yet.
Nope, but I plan to remedy that soon! Good to know that I'll be treated to more of this awesomeness.

Is there a name that exists for this particular gag?
I've always called them Rambo Montages.

Which was, of course, awesomely parodied by Joe Dante in Gremlins 2.
That gag has been parodied a lot, ZAZ did it, Loaded Weapon did it, my fave though is Isaac Hayes in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka- awesome payoff to that one.

I love those "tooling up" scenes. The serious (but still often times funny) versions include Rambo, Cobra, Commando, and Predator. Stallone's new movie really could have used one. I think the progenitor might be Robert Blake's cop-getting-ready-in-close-up bit during the opening to Electra Glide in Blue, which Maniac Cop later did a funny spin on.

Most recently as the very very funny shoelace gag currently playing in Scott Pilgrim. That had my packed cinema in hysterics.

ETA: Beaten by Hammerhead!

I always laugh my ass off during Galaxy Quest, when the crew is trying to beam up the pig creature as a practice run before getting Tim Allens character, it beams up inside out.
here IMDB says it better then I

Quote:
[Fred tries to digitize the pig-lizard with disastrous results]
Jason Nesmith: What? What was that?
Alexander Dane: Uh, nothing.
Jason Nesmith: I heard some squealing or something.
Gwen DeMarco: Oh, no. Everything's fine.
Teb: But the animal is inside out.
Jason Nesmith: I heard that! It turned inside out?
[the pig-lizard explodes]
Teb: And it exploded.

This is the best filmed gag in the history of cinema. Priceless shit.
Mine, and I'm pretty sure I'm the only person alive who thinks this is hilarious, is from Johnny Dangerously. A bunch of times in the film people say or do something threatening/insulting to Joe Piscopo and he answers with the same threat:
"Never kick me in the balls. My Sister kicked me in the balls once. Once."
That shit is gold.

Not the only person Matt. I still use that bit occasionally to this day.

In Big Trouble in Little China, Jack Burton is all amped up to get the fight started, fires his machine gun, fight get's started, a load of rubble falls on his head, the film cut's to a fight scene then back to Burton laid out cold, it's such a great gag, it never fails to make me smile.

Ha ha! So do I! No one has ever picked up on where it's from, which is hardly surprising, really.
My favourite all time comedy gag is a Slap. No matter what kind, as long as it's unexpected and accompanied by a satisfying sound effect, I laugh my fucking ass right off. I had a company logo for a few years that was a dude slapping a 50's housewife. Domestic abuse is not funny. But...yeah.
Two simple slapstick gags in Hot Fuzz make me laugh uproariously every time I see it: Danny getting hit right on the forehead with a metal bin thrown from off screen (why is getting hit with something that way always funnier? Like the syrup bottle in Super Troopers) and Danny trying to jump the fences, Nick Frost does a fantastic bemused expression when he stands up after crashing through the fence. I'm giggling just thinking about.

Edgar Wright is pretty much the current king of this phenomenon. Shaun demonstrating the headshot with his cricket bat then following it with a little "ow" is another one.

From the same movie, I love when he's struggling with a much larger enemy, only to have it fall over on him when he manages to incapacitate it. Russell's look of realization is absolutely priceless.

The "One Froggy Evening" homage in Spaceballs still makes me laugh, if only because of John Hurt's sublime underplaying of "Oh, no. Not again." Plus, who doesn't love Looney Tunes?
The one that always kills me in Spaceballs is the comb the desert sequence. "Man we aint found shit".
Pretty much the entirety of Better Off Dead, but I'm especially partial to the scene in which Cusack's character is knocked off the overpass and into a dumptruck. Upon which, Captain Fuller, in his days before joining the Jump Street squad, is heard to remark, "That's a damn shame. Folks throwing away a perfectly good white boy like that."
This one kills me every time, and it's so, so stupid. From The Private Eyes, with Don Knotts and Tim Conway, a movie loaded with stuff like this. The setup: Tim Conway's character communicates with Scotland Yard by carrier pigeon.

Because I have no soul or taste: The pillow fight in The Hot Chick. I think that's the only reason I've seen that movie more then once (that and an unnatural love for body switching films).

And the pig kill scene in Swing Girls.

And that previously mentioned spit take from Drunken Master 2. God bless Anita Mui.

And that moment in The Incredibles when the mom turns into a parachute and yells "Brace yourselves!"

I tend to not laugh a great deal in comedies (I love Hot Shots but never laugh during it), but those four moments consistently send me into peals of laughter.

Might be my favourite line from a Cusack movie ever. And I love Cusack films.

For me it's the scene where he stuff his face full of cue tips in the bathroom while Dean Martin plays over the soundtrack. The nonchalant way he greets his dad as he walks in and the look on his dads face after always leaves me in complete hysterics.

...and then of course there's my favourite deadpan line...

"I'm really sorry your mom blew up Ricky"
There's an episode of MST3K (The Hellcats) where a smiling girl pops into frame and Tom Servo enthusiastically declares "I'm Shelly! Rub my belly!" It cracks me up every time, it's so stupid.
At the beginning of The Whole Nine Yards, Matthew Perry storms out of his house after dealing with his horrid wife and her mother and gets in his car. He starts banging on the steering wheel. As he drives off, he stops the car and you hear him again. It cuts to him in traffic and he's stewing, staring at nothing and suddenly does it again. Cracks me up every time.

Naked Gun: The Jane doll's limbs flailing as Ricardo Montalban forces her up the stadium steps. I love obvious stuffed doll gags.

A figure of authority cursed with a high-pitched voice. Most recently used for Alpha in Up. I was cracking up SO hard. Literally stomping my feet from the hilarity.

Not a gag: but Matthew Fox's Jackface gets me giggling every time.
