Withnail & I (1987)

I looked for a thread about this but didn't find anything.

So this was a total surprise for me. I found it at the library and grabbed it from the gonzo cover alone, having never heard of it. Turned out to be a very funny movie, although with a creepy underlying edge. There was a sense of desolation, an almost apocalyptic feel that you can only get out of British films circa 1987 (re. Sid and Nancy).

A very funny film, but I felt so sad for the mixed up characters.

I think at the end it's pretty clear that the main character is going to move on and that Withnail, tragically, isn't. It's a great bromance movie and the ending packs a mighty punch. I still catch myself mumbling "nor woman neither" to myself at times.

Also one of the great movies if you love the look of the english countryside.

"A coward you are Withnail, an expert on bulls you are NOT!"

"This'll tend to make you very high."

Wayne's World 2 became ever so slightly better, retroactively, after I saw this movie.

This is an amazing film. The fact that Richard E. Grant never drank alcohol is a testament to what an amazing actor he is. You could've told me he was stinking drunk for real the entire shoot and I'd have bought it.

Wierd fact: The actor playing "I" in this movie and the actor playing the dealer both appear in Fincher's Alien 3.

Also, "Flowers are essentially tarts. Prostitutes for the bees."

I first watched this while very high with a group of friends, one of whom, at seeing the dealer, went "that's the guy from Wayne's World 2! The one who picks out the different colour m&ms for Van Halen!" This lead the rest of us to a fit of hysterics, which he misinterpreted as us not believing him. He spent the rest of the movie angrily googling.

Love that line!

And I love this movie and should really go out and buy it soon. That final scene kills me every time.

Absolutely. See also: Prick Up Your Ears (which makes for quite the sobering trifecta with the other two films you mentioned).
