Young Frankenstein

How the hell is there not a thread for this wonderful movie yet? Out of the Mel Brooks films I've seen (still need to see the original Producers, Blazing Saddles and probably Silent Movie), this is the best, and in addition to being hilarious it's also curiously touching/heartwarming. You really get to root for Frankenstein ("FRONK-EN-STEEN!") and his quest, as well as the Creature when he arrives.

Besides, it's just so damned funny. Laundry list!:

-Marty Feldman may very well be the MVP of this movie. I kept my eye on him constantly to see what he would do next, and nearly everything he does, even in the background, is hilarious.

-For some reason, Kenneth Mars' accent here reminds me slightly of the Swedish Chef, even though it really shouldn't.

-I can see why Gene Wilder considers this his favorite film that he's done, as it's probably his best/funniest performance, running through the full gamut of emotions, sometimes in a single scene. "SEDAGIVE?!"

-"BLUCHER!" *Whinny* Note to Hollywood: That's how you do a running gag.

-Speaking of which, Cloris Leachman and the other women are as wonderful as the men, especially with Leachman and Teri Garr's ridiculous German accents.

-Gene Hackman's cameo is a small masterpiece of deadpan comedy, and his final, improvised line is the perfect beat to end it on: "I was gonna make espresso!"

-Peter Boyle is fantastic as the Creature, funny and surprisingly moving at points, especially when he gets to speak and defend his creator at the end.

-The black-and-white cinematography is surprisingly beautiful, which is helped by Brooks' use of the original Frankenstein lab props. The twists on scenes from the original Frankenstein films are quite funny as well, especially with the Creature's encounter with the little girl.

-"Putting On The Ritz" nearly had me on the floor laughing.

Your thoughts, gentlemen?

I'm sure there's been a thread, at some point. There's almost nothing left to say, really. A masterpiece in every sense of the word.

It's amazing how beautifully shot it is, if only because all of Brooks' other movies are pretty goddamn ugly. (Blazing Saddles ain't bad, but it's still kind of flat.)

This is also the last time I let you file Madeline Kahn under miscellaneous "other women".

Like Floyd said, there's not much left to say about this one. It is without a doubt one of the top five comedies ever made, and never fails to crack me up every single time I watch it. The jokes are corny, sure, but they work, damn it. Also, Madeline Kahn and Teri Garr are SMOKING in this movie.

To this day, and for no apparent reason, I will sometimes find myself mumbling under my breath, "Destiny, destiny, no escaping that for me!"

*smacks head* Silly of me not to mention Kahn, God rest her soul. She's sexy and funny like she always is here.
