Last combat troops leaving Iraq right now

It's live, and only on msnbc (they have some special truck that lets them broadcast, no one else has the technology). Rachel Maddow is live from the International Zone in Baghdad. It was a secret military operation, and caught all the news organizations by surprise until it was revealed about 4 hours ago

The final troops crossed the bordrer into Kuait about 30 minutes ago.

There are still 50 troops left, but as of 9/1/10 theirs will be a non combat mission

As far as I'm concerned, this event is totally overblown. Call me when all American troops are out of Iraq.

That will either never happen, or the country will be totally broke and then it will happen but we'll be paying attention to other stuff by then.

We still have troops in Germany, the last 50 000 stay in Iraq for the foreseeable future, IMHO

So I guess the military personel based in some of the largest and most permanent US military bases in the world across the country will be referred to as 'non-combat troops'? Maybe we can call them 'super happy fun-time peace-keepers'? How about just 'Guardians of the Black Stuff'?

What do we get to call the people based in the embassy complex that's larger than Vatican City?

Oh yeah, the US is finished with Iraq all right.

I disagree. It's one thing keeping troops in Germany or Japan. It's another keeping them in Iraq. The American public might be cool with it if Iraq actually becomes stable, but I have little hope in that regard. If Iraq becomes unstable - you're gonna see one of two different outcomes: We leave or we go back in.

That's option 3, I forgot about that one.

When our guys are no longer 'backing up' or 'providing assistance to' the Iraqi army on raids this might have some meaning to it. Nothing worth getting excited over, but at least it won't be completely farcical.

Yea but aren't there like 200,000 private military troops still there? They are the ones that are far more problematic that the US military. In any case the white house is the biggest funder of these private militaries.

Bush used them extensively, and Obama dramatically increased their funding, so they're still there, and always will be. And they're not accountbale to any laws or rules, they can literally freely confess to murdering and raping and nothing can happen to them.

Just think about it, if we hadn't invaded Iraq the Iraqis wouldn't enjoy the freedom of Jerry Spring like TV! Doesn't this make you proud???

Gotta love Democracy.

Too bad we don't have Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and Eric Cantor have it out.
