American Flagg!

So, just got done reading the definitive edition, and processing it right now. Would love to know others' thoughts on it as well.

I got it in the used section at BSIComics. Picked it up because of the back matter in Casanova #1.

First thought is it is very 80's and very good. But a lot to digest. I haven't read the essays yet in the book. I will do that either later or tomorrow.

American Flagg is fucking classic; unfortunately relatively unknown by today's generation. Fanboys who know every line of Watchmen and TDKR by heart should be reading this instead; it's just as relevant and predates both the before mentioned in terms of prescient use of sci-fi and social commentary.

Glad Chaykin waited to put out those editions the right way. When you read about how he put together those first American Flagg runs technically, it's pretty mind-blowing.

Howard Chaykin is a god.

I am reading the essays in the book today. Digesting it all. Popped into my head on the drive in the thought that maybe this had an influence on Cowboy Bebop because I can see a bit of a similar thing going on between the two.

I find too many comic readers just want to stick to what is safe and what they know, which is a damn shame because comics are medium where there is so much damn potential and can influence a vast number of creators in different areas.

Subotai, I would love to read any thoughts you have on it, or if you know of any good essays on the work.

I'll pop in with some American Flagg! love as well. 100% pure Chaykin. 100% forward looking. A milestone in comic book craftmanship that's every bit as important and accomplished as Watchmen and DKR.

Are there finally decent collected editions easily available? I've been wanting to read this for-fucking-ever and have yet to find a decent, cost-effective option. What little I've seen of it looks incredible.

You'll want to start with http://www.amazon.com/American-Flagg...mm_pap_title_0

Volume 2 is a must have as well.

Met Chaykin at Project Comic Con 2 in St. Louis this past weekend - really nice guy. Looking forward to digging into this.

So reading the backmatter for the latest issue and apparently Chaykin got death threats for AMERICAN FLAGG! Sad state of comic readers out there. Anyway, good interview and wort checking out.
