PIRANHA 3D-Post Release Thread

I couldn't find a pre/post thread so I'm going to have to create one.

This movie is a hilarious bloodbath. As ridiculous as it is- it never dives into straight comedy- It just teeters on the boarder. This creates a much different tone than I was expecting.

The carnage as the stage falls over is brilliant. If you can find a packed theatre for this it would be a BLAST.

Jerry O'Connell=MVP.

Also tons of JAWS references. I spotted:

-collapsing deck
-Pull-out/Zoom-in effect
-Bobbing head scare- similar to the sunken ship severed head scare
-Obviously the Piranha POV
-Spring Break/4th of July

How's the 3-D? On a scale from Titans to Avatar, where does it rank?
The 3D is junk.
And the movie?
Heard not good things.

Crap. This seemed like a sure thing, potentially so much fun. Oh, well. Thanks for the warning.

Guess we all go see Scott Pilgrim again...
Movie's great, but post-conversion always sucks. This is no exception.

Also on the list of JAWS references - you left out the entire opening scene.

Damn it. I thought they filmed this in 3D.
Yeah, me too. Was sure they shot this with 3D Cameras.
Shot in 2-D with "a 3-D consultant" on set.
That... really seems to miss the point of the whole thing.
Is the 3D the bad distracting kind like CLASH OF THE TITANS or just unimpressive?
So the 3D isn't up to snuff with My Bloody Valentine? Bummer.

Half and half. Let's put it this way - a character barfs into the camera and the effect doesn't really sell. But the movie's so wacky and over the top and nuts that you can deal with it.
Cool. I know you hate twenty questions so thanks for the info.

I don't know if that's sarcastic, but MBV has some freakin' awesome 3D.

Disappointed the 3D isn't great, because the movie looks like a blast. That Oscar reel is hilarious.
It's not sarcastic, I loved MBV's 3D, and was hoping this would be a similar experience.

Glad the movie sounds great, but to be honest I've been looking for a reason to save money and not see it in theater, so here's my excuse.
Fuck it I'm seeing this Saturday. In the mood for some crazy over the top fun...
Aja said they couldn't shoot with 3D cameras because the water messes with the lighting too much.

Anyways I'm glad to hear the movies good.

And the casting of Dreyfuss!

Hollywood News: Why did you take a role in Piranha 3-D? Was that a tribute to Jaws?

Dreyfuss: I had said no because I didn’t want to make fun of my own career. I was on the phone with Bob Weinstein and he said, “We can give you a lot more money,” and I told him what I was involved in. I was describing to him this [idea of] bringing civics back, so that people understood their own civic authority. Because if we’re bound only by ideas and don’t teach them, we’re not bound. And, he interrupted and said, “If it hadn’t already been written, I would have said, ‘You had me at civics.’” He wrote a check that was this big to the Initiative, and I said, “Okay, I’ll do the film.” And their names are going to be on the bottom of the website, permanently.

Post-converted??? BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Glad to hear it's fun though.

You did. I only hope his cameo isn't as quick as it was in Southland Tales.

Yeah I'd say the 3D was sometimes nauseating, pointless and also kind of great.

This movie is a homerun for a horror fan- the gore is phenomenal. The nudity is almost constant. And one of my favorite bits it just when you think they're going to take the next step with the movie's love story- The main character Jake kisses the drunk love interest for about half a second before she pukes toward the camera in 3D.

This is arguably Aja's best movie next to High Tension... Although I haven't seen Mirrors.

This makes me happy.

MIRRORS is a french-fried turd.

Never ones to fear breaking embargo, Dread Central gives it a rave.

Haven't see Mirrors yet, but I love both High Tension (not the ending tho) and The Hills Have Eyes, and this movie does seemed like it's alot of fun. Alexandre Aja is a pretty good director and one of the best in the horror genre imo. Btw, AP gives it a glowing three-and-half-star out of four in this review.
What a bloody, fun, goofy movie. Pretty damn entertaining. When a fish pukes up a mangled dick in your face, you know you're watching something special.

The 3D is this film is much, much better than Clash. Didn't see Airbender so I have no idea how that is. But the picture was completely clear and the depth was good. All the people I saw it with agree. BUT, the 3D in the trailer for the new Resident Evil flick looked fucking amazing. People were OHHH'ing and AHHH'ing the entire time. When the big guy throws that axe everybody let out a collective gasp.
So much fun. Almost too much skill brought to a film about people becoming half. Stallone's been shown up by CGI fish.

OH GOD. SO EXCITED.

Seriously, I may put off my 1st Scott Pilgrim viewing for this instead.
Wow, that's a very strong review.

Fucking A. I've got a clusterfuck of a weekend in front of me but I need this. I need this bad.
Damn. Sounds awesome. Is it showing in 2D at all, or is this definitely a movie that needs to be seen in its crappy post converted glory?
Perfectly spot-on review. I can think of nothing to add.
I read "During an extended (and I mean extended) underwater nude semi-lesbian romp between Kelly Brook and Riley Steele" stopped, went to fandango, and got tickets.
Wtf...not a word on Ving's performance after his crazy radio interview?
Nice review. I knew I had to see this in the theater with a potential of being awesome (loved The Hills Have Eyes remake but Mirrors... yikes), but now I'm really stoked.
Great review. I don't see it on the main page anywhere though. If I hadn't come from the link in this thread I would have missed it.

Edit: Never mind. I see it on the left now. I probably just spaced out. Nothing to see here folks.
Aja comes close to out-splatsticking Peter Jackson during the Lake Victoria feeding frenzy.

Also, Gianna Michaels as an ill-fated parasailer.
The movie is definitely sick, twisted fun. But man, does the 3D suck. There's no way I can justify spending an extra 3 or 4 dollars for future post conversion 3D. The "Resident Evil" trailer just drove home the difference (even though I'm sure "Piranha" is the better film).
I miss the freaky Piranha attack sound effect from Dante's original, but yeah this movie was a riot. Liberal on the ketchup, cool gore and mayhem. O'Connell was great, most of the other acting not so great, but it suited the movie just fine (I forget, was Shue ever genuinely good in anything?). Needed more Ving though. At least he got an "I'm too old for this" in there. Also, I am a bit annoyed that the trailers spoiled the final shot for me. But still, a highly enjoyable movie.

YES! Now that you mentioned it- the scene reminds me very much of the zombie attack/massacre in Braindead. Its just what Devin's review said... Aja keeps his head down in the scene and lets what he has already built develop into gore-gags. Much like Jackson's stuff.

Amazing film, and I'm glad I caught it back-to-back with Scott Pilgrim.

One question: My memory may be failing me, but did Paul Scheer simply disappear from the boat after it started sinking?
An awesome movie that gets held from critics for fear that they won't "get it" ends up getting an 80 percent on Rotton Tomatoes. How lovely.
Cool random tidbit: the character Jake is played by Steve McQueen's grandson. Glad to know that the McQueen family is still fighting creatures in fun horror flicks (like McQueen did in The Blob). Anyways, this film is all kinds of deranged fun. Favorite bits are probably Ving's last stand against the piranhas with boat motor, chick having her fucking face ripped off by motor, and anything revolving around O'Connell or Dreyfuss. Eli Roth having head smushed by speed-boat ranks pretty high, too. Shue actually was looking pretty sexy throughout, if I do say so myself. Oh, Disciple 72, Shue was great in Leaving Las Vegas.
I haven't seen the movie yet (I'm seeing it Saturday night) but has anyone else seen this:

Saw the last show of the day, and it wasn't packed, but the movie PLAYED. Jerry O'Connell was definitely the best part of the movie next to the effects.

The opening scare succeeded in actually making me jump for the first time in a long time. Made my girlfriend really jump.

The entire lake carnage scene is so over the top violent that it's amazing that it passed with minimal cuts. Especially the penis scene. That's some demented awesome right there.

Some of the 3D was off, but for the most part I it worked for me.

The final jump was expected, but pretty cool.

Adam Scott also did a great job of playing the hero, and reminded me of Bradford Dillman.

Also loved the homage to the original with " Count to a number and haul ass in the boat and pull me out of the water since I'm tied with a rope."
Seriously everyone go see this in the theater and bring friends. The 3D is headache inducing garbage but you won't care. Aja deserves a hit for this.

I saw an 8pm show and the theater was mostly empty. The small amount of people there completely ate the film up though.
