Civilization 5 - Page 2

I know a few Civ players, but I haven't played MP all that much...until now. Tomorrow the 14th at 7 EST, there will be a private Chewer game. Bugs or no, extra Culture points (in name only) to those who show up and make silly Ben-Hur references.

Come one, come all!

I'm in. I think I added a couple of you so I'll be on tonight at 7 to give it a whirl.
Great, we have three. Unless more are interested, that's perfect.

1. bob loblaw
2. tcjsavannah
3. Monty/CivCube

How to host a private game, courtesy of CFC:

Quote:
* In Steam, add the people you want to play against as friends. They should likewise add you as friends. (I don't know which direction makes the difference.)
* Go to Steam's Friends menu and "sign into Friends". (Steam may have done this automatically.)
* Did you ever turn off Steam's in-game overlay because it was annoying you when you started the game? Time to turn it back on, you'll need it.
* Go back to Civ 5 and start your private game.
* If you haven't hosted a Civ 5 game before, Windows Firewall is probably screaming at you right now, except you can't tell because you're inside Civ. Alt-Tab out of Civ and check for that window. If it's there, allow Civ 5 to talk to the Internet.
* In your hosted game, you should see a player list that contains just you, and in this state nobody will be able to join. Click the green buttons next to the empty slots until you have the right number of players, including AIs.
* Now your friends should press SHIFT+TAB inside Civ 5. This brings up the Steam overlay, where they should see an option to join your game.
* As they join your game, the AIs will turn into them. (Note: AIs that stay as AIs will play weaker than they usually do -- hard as it is to believe -- and they will suck at diplomacy.)
* Start the game. Enjoy. Do not hit alt+tab from this point forward, it'll kick you out.
Around 7 EST just be on Steam, and you should receive an invitation.

Please be gentle...
Depends. Would you prefer an army of German barbarians, used scout condoms everywhere you find ruins sites, or ostracization from the cool city-state crowd? It's more likely to happen to me.
My biggest sin so far in playing this game is that I am trying to be everything to everybody. I am so concerned about city happiness, growing culture and science and harboring good relations with neighbors that I tend to overlook things like my economy and city defenses. It really hits home when Montezuma lands on my doorstep with a fleet of tanks and I have a single archer trying to fend them off.
Holy shit, that's been my gameplay flaw since Civ 3. It's so easy to get wrapped up in all the different mechanics that planning an actual strategy and playing becomes difficult. I love that stuff, but it's also why you won't see me conquering the world any time soon. Beyond the Sword remains the king of my "to-play" list with all its different scenarios and mechanics.

In Civ 5, the victory conditions are much more straightforward this time around, allowing you to spend some time getting a feel for the game. However, they also require knowing what you want to do from 4000 BC on and planning your goals from the get-go. If you don't, that Social Policy tree can be less helpful than you want it to be. It's a double-edged sword of helpfulness in focusing your decision-making.
Im still not in sync with that Policy Tree yet. I get the feeling that most experienced Civ players have their first 100 moves mapped out before they even start playing. They know which policies to take, which techs to research, which Wonders to build. I'm not close to being there yet...which makes me an easy target.

I haven't looked at any websites for help in this matter, instead stubbornly trying to figure it all out on my own. I think I am getting the hang of it all finally, but I have definately taken my lumps along the way.

My latest single-player games I've been about the maritime civs. Befriend them, get the ones with luxuries you don't have so you can sell yours to the other civs. It'll be interesting to play a game where I can't just automatically hock my luxuries for 300 gold a pop to an AI.

Alright, so the first CHUD Civ V game was a success. No crashes, just one hangup and a pretty fun way to spend a couple of hours. I'd like to see a semi-regular date-time for MP games if the interest is there.. looks like we've got a core group of three at least!
Yeah, that was fun. The second game after you left also had a couple hangs, but nothing too bad. We were on a tiny pangaea map with 2 AIs. While Bob bided his time, I tried some more aggressive expansion, something that the AI always had over me in Civ 3 and 4.

I tried to go for domination, which didn't work at all. Bob took his capitol back easily. I tried a couple feints with my measly two riflemen, who were slaughtered by the parade of knights. I think Tenochtitlan was surrounded by at least ten units before the deed was done. Good times.
Argh... Are you guys about to make me buy Civ V? Cause now I gotta jonesing for it.

Give in...give in to the hate.

Last night was fun. I'm hoping we can get a regular group together to do 4-8 man runs. It's always better when the sneak attacks and backstabs come from actual humans.

Any word on the next games?

I can do another one Thursday night if people are game.
Same here. The next few weeks will get more busy for me, but I think I can usually swing evenings Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are my best days.
I can probably play later this week, maybe Thursday.
So the Mongols are going to be free DLC with the patch. They must be confident about balancing the existing horsemen units.
Monty, you want to set up a Thursday 7pm et game?
Sounds good. I get off work at 3 EST, so that would be a good time.

I should be in again as well.

I hope my civ doesn't get stuck next to tcj. I think he looks at other civs the way a rottweiler would look at a porkchop.

Another good game last night, sorry to hear you had comp troubles though Bob. Monty got a bit of bad luck getting sandwiched in between us.
I apologize for that. I will make sure all technical difficulties are ironed out beforehand for next time. Am I right to assume that TCJ did his normal world domination thing again?

Yeah, but it was just bad timing on Monty's part.. I saw three of his units near my border and it was approaching 11 pm, so I just chatted "It's about time we decided this" .. to Monty's detriment, the AI had actually built up your army so he was stuck fighting a two-front war, which on that type of map is never a good thing.
I don't know if I was really sandwiched, per se. That "tiny" map was large enough for at least four or five civs. But I probably should have balanced my priorities some more if I wanted to take on TCJArabia's camel archer spread of doom. Just bad timing overall, but still a fun game.

We'll have to see how the new patch works out for MP. I hear producing wealth now requires 25% of city production instead of 10%.

The patch has already affected the early SP game in a couple of ways - AIs will no longer dole out 300 gold per luxury right off the bat, and they're actively dealing with barbs a lot better than I've seen before. Not sure about the MP effects yet.
Well, I did it. You right bastards made me buy Civ V. My user name here is the same as in Steam. Civ now--Civ forever! I have added Monty, TCJSavannah, and Bob loblaw to my Steam friends. Let me know of the next game and I will be there. I also joined the Chud group and WePlayCiv group.

The problem I see is that they didn't just re-value resources entirely, they changed the values for the player. If you try to trade 1 happiness resource for 1 happiness resource with an AI civ who you have a Pact of Cooperation with and have been BFF with the whole game, they still won't make the trade. You need to give them the old 300 gold, or now, 2 happiness resources, in exchange for 1. That doesn't seem right to me.

I think the values should be the same and the AI should analyze their current happiness to determine how much or for what they will trade resources. If the AI is swimming in happiness, then no trade, if they're desperately unhappy, then they should make the trade even if they take the loss. Just like the player would in the same situation.

Fantastic. More heads to stomp on--I mean, friends. Happy friends to have Pacts of Cooperation.

Wednesday or Thursday evening would be good for me this week. What say you guys?
Wednesday would be better for me, but I can make Thursday if I have some heads up to rearrange some things.
I actually had a chance to sit down and play some this weekend and I think the light finally has turned on. I'm down for whenever. If Im online just PM me. Otherwise anytime between Tues and Thurs work for me too.

Yeah, I've heard all the complaints about how now the AI will not do a 1 for 1 luxury deal no matter what. I guess I'm ok with that, since mostly I'm cash grabbing in my trades rather than actually trading for luxuries.

And I'm good for Wednesday and Thursday of this coming week. Welcome aboard MrTyres!

So how exactly do you host a game? I tried but I see nowhere where I can invite people on Steam. It's really confusing.
When you host a private game, you right-click on people's icons in the overlay.

Ah, got it. I so rarely use that shift-tab overlay that I didn't think about it at first. Thanks!
How often are you guys playing MP vs. solo games? The only time I have played MP is with you for the past couple weeks but I was wondering if some of you played with other groups.

Yesterday was my first MP game with someone outside of the CHUD group - a guy was sitting in the CivFanatics' group chat room so I tried out a quick game with him.

Most of my play historically has been solo. I did Civ IV like once or twice with some friends but didn't get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
I've actually attempted to get into some of the internet games for CIV 5. Most of the times that I tried I was unable to connect to the game. The couple of times I was able to connect the games ended up dissolving because people were complaining about other people taking too long (which is a problem, especially in an 8 man game). Other than the hiccups I had last week, my connection to Monty's games have been good.
Anybody up for a game tonight? Say around 7pm et?

I might be able to do one a little later, 7:30-ish. My Wednesday night is wide open though if that works better.
Wednesday I have a family birthday party to attend but I could probably be on later that night. I will be on tonight and thursday for sure so shoot me a message if you are on.
Well, didn't really convince Tyres that Civ 5's MP is more stable than Civ 3's...shame. That first map was looking promising.
It was a promising map. I am not sure why we could get started, but then could never come back.
Right after CivCube dropped, I was able to get into the game. I am not sure how to fix a technical problem I don't understand.
That's too bad. :\ Maybe there's something on my end that's buggering things.
After our attempts last night, Tyres invited me to a game. Once I accepted the invite I immediately got a computer error message and it kicked me out of the game completely. This happened twice. After all that I went and got into a regular internet game with 5 random people, so I think the problem may be on Tyres end. Might I suggest reloading the game again.

I will be on again later this evening, probably around 8-9pm et if anybody would like to give it a go.
Yeah, I didn't log in to play tonight. I uninstalled and reinstalled to see if something was booched. I will try a multiplayer game tomorrow and see if it works.

Last night's one was fun.. I like the quick speed for multi-player and the small continents had a lot more room to build than an archipelago map does normally. When you attacked me the last time, Monty, what were you trying to do.. kill the settler or the knight?
