I'm leaving CHUD - Page 3

Devin Faraci, you still owe me a drink.
Thread Starter
I do. I'm coming back to Austin in September.
No no, Jared, what you don't realize is we all owe him a drink.

Of our souls.

Hats off to ya, Mr. Faraci. Like others have said, and better, there are literally hundreds of movies I've checked out over the last seven years largely based on your recommendation. I'm sad to see you leave CHUD, but hope you'll still be haunting the boards from time to time. Someone needs to harrumph us back to discussing movies more.

ETA: See, Jared? Devin's coming back to Austin. AUSTIN, JARED. Not Whereeverthefuck, Oregon! *cries into pillow*
post #104 of 501
Best of luck to you, dude. You're my favorite film critic and have given me plenty to think about over the years. Thank you.
Shame. When not nerdbaiting gamers and comic book geeks you were probably the most mature writer on the site, and certainly elevated the overall level of main page discourse.

But I'm surprised people are surprised by this. Wasn't a big part of your reasoning for moving to L.A. because you'd gotten a job offer out here that you'd had to refuse because you were still in New York, and you didn't want to have to pass up on that sort of thing if it came up again?
Just want to echo everyone else's sentiments. Good luck with your new gig, thanks for the great writing.
You're the best film writer on the web and among the best regardless of medium and I'll be sure to follow what you do next. Good luck. It has been great fun.
thanks for saying all the things about movies I couldn't hope to put in such eloquent terms.

thanks for making me see films in new perspectives, and for touting stuff that I would never have heard about otherwise (slither and behind the mask are the two top ones)

thanks for everything you did for the site. Can't wait to see whats next
post #109 of 501
I'm putting my money in the new job being screenwriting. I don't know why.
I don't think Devin knows me at all, but I might as well drop in and mention that he's a tremendous writer, and that I hope he does at least one more of those revists of a Top Fifteen list.
I'm really bummed out by this.
It really saddens me to read this.

Though I am rarely in agreement with your opinions/reviews, I do always find them intriguing, elaborate and VERY interesting to read and full of insight.
It's not going to be same CHUD.
Whoa...your voice will be sorely missed. You are without a doubt one of the top five writers on the internet, and even when I disagreed with your reviews, I always enjoyed reading them. Good luck to you, Devin...I'm sure whatever you have in the pipe will be great, and I look forward to checking it out.
The shit that happens while the Southern hemisphere is asleep... Very disheartening. Good luck to you Dev, if you're ever in my hood you're welcome to crash on my couch.
Jeez, I go see one screening of TORQUE and things get crazy in here.
Good luck to you sir. Your hornet's-nest-smacking writings will be missed. I'm a relative newcomer to Chud, but it was your articles that made me a regular visitor.
Good luck in the porn industry.
Can I give a Jay Landsman style eulogy when this wake takes place?
The way you think has affected the way I think Devin. I thank you and I salute you.

Don't cry, baby... we'll always have Reno!

And hey Devin... good job, dude. You're alright, you know that?
Devin, the very best to you. One day I will hunt you down and we will watch Observe and Report together. You're the only person I know who adored that film as much as I do.
Congrats on the new gig man (whatever that is), you are one of the best at what you do and you will be missed.
Just echoing everyone else's sentiments. You will be sorely missed, you infuriatingly rational/opinionated jerk. Your reviews often made me think alot more than the films they were about did. And that's a glorious thing. Hats off to you, good sir.
devincf, Good luck and good tidings.
There's a massive, massive pile of films, books and music I love that I've discovered thanks to your writing over the years. Thank you for that. Good luck on your next gig!
Best of luck Devin, I've enjoyed your writing immensely over the years.

I hope this isn't a HitFix-type situation where I promise myself I'll keep reading a writer's work, and well...

And yes, I too admit to being selfishly concerned about the future of "Star-Trekkin".

To heck with Star Treckin', who's gonna carry the torch for Going The Distance?
Best of luck Devin.

I'll hold out hope for Star Trekkin' to one day appear in book form.

Good luck with the new gig Devin I can't wait to see what it is. CHUD won't be the same without you but that doesn't mean it won't still be great.
Damn shame to hear. Chud became the only site I got news from because I appreciated the intelligence and candor of Devin. He brought a great objective approach to news coverage of blockbusters and was tireless in pointing out the small, special, films which made us all better cinema fans.

Without Devin here I don't really see much of a reason to visit the site because as much as I like Renn and Joshua Miller they still haven't developed a distinct a voice as Devin had.
While I've read the site for years, I don't post much. Let me add to the chorus by saying Devin has been the principal reason I hold CHUD in such high regard in terms of movie criticism, and I'm grateful for his articles, which steered me towards some obscure movie-watching experiences I might otherwise have missed.

I hope we'll be able to follow your work in some other venue, in addition to seeing how CHUD continues to grow and change in your absence.
Devin taught me to love film better. Seriously. I don't think I could articulate why I loved film like I do: Devin clarified and put to words the appreciation I felt when I sat down to a great movie. I'd like to think I grabbed a few things from the film writers I love: from Harry his unbridled enthusiasm of movies, from Drew his inside knowledge and interpretation, from Beaks his skilled writing style and ability to see what's underneath, and from Devin maybe the most important thing of all - why films MATTER. I'll read whatever you have going next. And I'm still here too, becuase Nick taught me about blowing up sacred cows and self-importance is the death of great art. For now, Devin, you'll be missed. Good luck, sir.
Good luck, Devin. You've worked tremendously hard on CHUD and contributed much that was thought-provoking.
Devin, your writing is the perfect combination of massive film knowledge with just the right amount of smart-ass attitude; just the thought of the words "Fuck This Face!" together usually sends me into a fit of laughter. It will be weird not reading your stuff on CHUD but I look forward to following whatever you do in the future.
I want to be happy for you Devin because I'm sure you've got something awesome lined up, but mostly I just feel sad. You were my critic. Your tastes are similar enough to mine so that when you recommended something, I paid attention. Even when you slagged a film I loved or championed a film I hated I could at least tell where you were coming from. There are some people who put more stock in a Rotten Tomatoes rating than the review of someone they like and respect, and I've never understood that. I'd much rather hear the opinion of someone who I know has a passion for film and a critical eye than the consensus of two dozen strangers. It's a relationship that's built up over time: I've been visiting Chud since 2004 and I've stuck around because of Devin. Devin's not only brought lesser-known films to my attention (I doubt I would have bothered to see Winter Bone last week if not for Devin's review) he's also changed the way I look at film and film criticism in general. So while I know you've probably got a good thing going there in L.A., and I'll miss you here at Chud.
Hey... I thought "I'm leaving Chud" threads were instant permabans! Just kidding.

Um, Fuck This Face was me.

Give them a chance dude! Also, look at Renn's I Am Love review and his tag-team work with Nick- the guy is really good.

Congrats and good luck for whatever the new venture may be Devin- you'll be an asset whatever it is.
This is sad news... but the best of wishes and fortune towards you and your future.

Well, I really feel like an ass now, Nick. I don't know why but I always associated that article with Devin.

It should make you proud for the future!

Don't worry, we still love your CHUDsploitation column.

In the assumption that Devin is taking his talents to South Beach and will appear elsewhere, I think i can find time in my very busy schedule to read two web sites. Good luck and I look forward to seeing both new Devin and new CHUD in the fall.
End of an era. Devin's just a consistently interesting voice. A part-time madman. Genuine love for flicks. He will be missed. Good luck with what's up next.
Devin, I really hope you continue to write as well and as prolifically as you have done here on Chud. Best of luck in your future endeavors.

A doff of the hat to you, Devin. For as long as I've been frequenting this grand site yours has been the voice I associate with it. You'll be sorely missed, and there are now some gigantic shoes to fill here at Chud. Looking forward to seeing where you end up and trolling you there. Ha.

Seriously though, best of luck.
I consider myself pretty film knowledgeable, but I never would have discovered the perverse glory of "Addio Zio Tom" if not for Devin's CHUDsploitation column. I'm going to really miss seeing his writing on a daily basis.
I made this my most-visited movie site because of the high standard of writing here. And for that same reason I was elated when they let me start writing DVD reviews.

And I've always felt Devin's the best writer on here.

Still excited about CHUD's future. But I am sorry to see you go. Best of luck in your future endeavors!
Ominous news for the site, probably good news for Devin as a writer though. It's hard not to notice there have been fewer and fewer advocates and other features over the last year, so if whatever he's up to next gives him the time and freedom to write about whatever he wants then could be for the best.

Can't deny I often find the guy frustrating as hell, but when he's waxing lyrical about his passions he's one of the strongest and most compelling voices I've come across on't web, and I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on his next move. Even if it's on fucking Hitfix.
Good luck, Devin. Thank you for all the excellent recommendations, well-written reviews and conversation fodder you've given to us over the years. I'm excited to see where you're heading; hopefully (selfishly), it will be some place where we can still read (or hear, or see) your thoughts from time to time.

CHUD won't be the same.
