I'm leaving CHUD - Page 5

Interesting news. There's been many movies that I wouldn't have seen or even bothered to check out if it wasn't for your reviews and articles on them. Not too mention just the Devin's Advocate and editorials like that which have made me re-think certain scenes or movies.

Good luck with whatever is you're moving onto and good luck to the new staffers of CHUD!
I'll be sad to see you leave CHUD, Devin. I've always enjoyed your very well-written movie reviews, and it'll take some getting used to see to reviews written by other people in this site. Best of luck to all your future endeavors, and I'll keep a tab on you whenever you go.
Devin, I'm a huge fan of your writing and contributions to the site and board. Best of luck, man.

Your articles and MB postings have been paramount in keeping me from breaking this nasty CHUD habit (that, and the equally nasty wop that lives on the other side of GA400). I wish you all the best in your future endeavors, and look forward to adding the bookmark for your future diggs.

Like many have said, Devin has made me want to be a better film nerd, he is my #1 film writer working today with Roger Ebert being #2. Wherever Devin ends up they are guaranteed my readership for as long as he is working there.

And I can't wait to see how Chud mutates* Post-Faraci.

Congrats and best of lucks to everyone involved.

* It seemed a more appropriate word over "evolves"

SERIOUSLY.
I was looking forward to the rest of that series like no other.. you can take Star Trekkin' with you, just finish this over the next few days? Too much to ask?

Best of luck with the future gig, Devin. We all know what a.. polarizing.. force you could be on the boards, but everyone could always agree your front-page content was the best to be found, anywhere. Keep up the good fight sir.
Good luck Devin, you will be missed. I remember when you came aboard. I wanted to not like you but I couldn't help myself.
Best of luck, sir. Thanks for being awesome, on and off-line.
Well I certainly have disagreed with Devin a time or 2000 but I have always respected his views on films. there are a few movies out there I might not have seen if it wasn't for Devin so I thank him for that.
I've never been much of a board user, but in all the years I've been reading the main site, Devin's writing was the stuff I most looked forward too. As pathetic as it may be for me to feel sadness at someone no longer writing for a website, CHUD's my favourite website and Devin's been my favourite writer. Shame to see you go fella.

Though, glad I got forewarning of this, as opposed to when it took me a while to notice Russ had vanished.

Gah. Good night, good luck etc
I love these kind of threads that garner hundreds of responses. It makes me see that there are more than 40 active chewers going around. Maybe.
You're an awesome writer dude, it won't be the same without you. Looking forward to seeing what you've got coming up next.
Happy trails Dev.
Wow, just got back from holidays to read this news. First, congrats to Devin on whatever new doors have been opened but Nick, you have my patronage for time immemorial as CHUD has earned my loyalty. Best wishes for Devin, I'll keep an eye on your new venture whatever it is, but CHUD will always remain my home.

...Like Moriarty's departure from AiCN... things won't be quite the same.

There has to be at least 50 of us. Anyway, Good luck Devin. I'm sure you've got some major shit planned and I'm sure it will be awesome.
Devin,

Everyone else has been writing heart felt messages that attempt to convey to you the role you played in their lives and what your absence means to CHUD. I hope you can understand, but I'm not really good at dealing with situations like this and the big emotions that inevitably follow. I've been reading CHUD since 2004, and the reason I kept reading beyond the stray "external reviews" link on IMDB was your strong sense of journalistic ethics. You're a true reporter, and I hope that compliment means as much to you to receive it as it does for me to give it. I take reporting seriously, and among Internet Movie Journalists, you're in a class by yourself

I will write more about this whole situation (I congratulate you for whatever you might have on the horizon, but for me right now this isn't fun. I don't like change and CHUD has been a daily staple of my life for more than half a decade now) later in the "Good bye" thread you've said you'll post. I will attempt to go into depth about this news, my reaction to it, and the implications. For now though, just know that I want to thank you for your years of dedication. Dedication to bringing me the most accurate movie news and most thoughtful reviews you were capable of delivering. It's meant a lot
post #217 of 501
Damn. You're my favorite movie critic and I learn a great deal about movies by reading your articles. I mean, damn, I don't read anyone who writes quite like you and with your point of view.

Good luck.
Bummer, but congrats on your future enterprises.

Wonder if that Inception article (most read!) raised your profile in the 'community'.
Good luck Dev, and to your replacement.

Sure I'll be following what you do next very closely.
It's really been 6 years? Didn't seem like it and I've been following this site since sometime at the start of this decade. I pretty much saw how he develop a poor opinion of anime that is not Ghibli related here. Guess Steamboy didn't help, which was also the only time where I've ever interacted with him on the boards on. (Yes, it's a crap movie and the closing credits was quite literally was the most interesting thing about it)

Well good luck with your future endevours Devin. Can't wait to hear what it is.
Chud.com will always be a brand name in the online movie world. But Devin Faraci has become a brand while dev has written for the site which makes this move seem quite natural. Now separated, I'm sure both brands will continue to succeed.

Congrats to dev. Well earned. I look forward to seeing what both Chud & dev do next.
You're very good at what you do, so you don't need me to wish you luck, but best wishes to you, man.
Best of luck, Sir.
I rarely read these threads so I just got the bad news. Quite sad.

Having said that, CHUD survived the departures of Smiling Jack Ruby, Dave Davis and Clarence Beaks. It will survive Devin's. Although I seriously believe Devin's in a class all by himself. He's amongst the very best in the business, and he towers above anyone on the web. For me, CHUD's pinnacle was when Beaks and Faraci were the main contributors. Great, great writing all around.

Good luck to the remaining CHUD writers, may you use this void to grow and develop. I'm hoping CHUD will remain my favorite and most frequented website.

Devin, I'll follow your writing wherever you go. Concerning your departure, could it be that your "Never Wake Up" column attracted the attention of bigger players?
Sad news indeed. Always trusted your reviews and championing of films. Got me to watch Spartan by putting it in your top 15 or I could have missed it.

Good Luck.
Best of luck Devin although you shouldn't be allowed to leave until you finish Star Trekkin'. You're an excellent writer and I've enjoyed your articles very much. I think your presence on the boards has matured a lot over the years and I look forward to following your exploits in the future. Unless of course you plan on following Stephen Geoffreys' career path in which case you're on your own.
Yeah, something needs to happen with Star Trekkin', fer real. It's kinda bookworthy. Regardless, I have to admit I'm really curious to hear what's next for devincf.
Agreed, Devin's made this site a haven for intelligent film discussion. The other regular non-feature writers are just not enough of a draw for me. We'll see how this goes.
Holy crap. I'm off the boards for a couple of days, and some major shit goes down while I'm gone.

I have to say that my heart is hit just as hard as everyone else's here. I've always thought that Devin and Nick were the perfect yin and yang of this board. Their views on film would often align, but just as often they would disagree. They were the perfect bookends to any film site I've ever been to, and they are the reason why CHUD is my favourite among them. Hell, seeing what all the contributors do here was enough to inspire me to give the CHUD Blog thing a go (especially Andrea's blog). I enjoy being a part of this site, even if most of the time my blogs are read by only one or two people (Ken Savage is my biggest fan - thanks bud).

I'm looking forward to what Nick has in store with this change, but it doesn't take the sting out of what we are losing. And Devin, I know you constantly grumbled about teaching Chewers about film. In fact, you flat out refused to do it. Despite that, I have learned a lot from you. Thank you for your voice on these boards. Part of CHUD's personality comes from you, and even after you depart that portion of CHUD's personality will remain. And for that I am grateful.

Can't wait to see what you have cooking next. I'll be there.

Thank you.
Yeah, hate to join in the echo but I really appreciate Devin's insight and criticism on film. I especially appreciate his war against nostalgia and lazy viewing (if only because it hit close to home). While I'm certainly not as well educated as I'd like in film, it's Devin's reviews and public shaming has helped push me outside of my genre comfort and into more interesting films.

Actually, I appreciate everything CHUD does towards that aim. Whether it's Beaks, Russ Fischer, SJR, Devin Faraci, or whoever, Nick has always gone out there and tried to keep contributors around who are real film fans that are still excellent and knowledgeable critics.
The only reason I come to CHUD is to read Devin's articles. I do end up reading other news, but Devin is the draw.

Devin, I will be a regular reader of yours wherever you end up. Please say you'll continue to make your home on the net. Don't go full-print!

Nick, in fairness I will give post-Devin CHUD a chance, but you know Devin is nigh-irreplaceable.
Best of luck, Devin. I've shared your articles with non-geeks. That is how highly I regard your writing. You will definitely be missed around here and I second (or third?) the request for a cameo appearance for Devin Faraci and the Unhealthy Obsession if your new commitments allow. That image is scarred in to my brain.

Nick, you're going to have quite the void to fill, but I"m confident you'll be able to fill it. CHUD remains my internet movie/game geek home.
I've lurked around here long enough to remember when Nick wrote more than Devin, but over the years Devin has become the personification of this site. His insightful pieces will be sorely missed around here. I'll give neo-CHUD a chance, but I have zero clue what this site will be like without him. Nervous, curious and excited all at once.
This is a huge shock, just like everyone else already said.
Best wishes on your future plans, Devin, and thanks for all the memorable moments and quality articles.
Looking forward to see where you pop up next.
It is going to be weird not seeing your bearded mug around here, coming from a long time reader and fan. No other writer has made me as angry or made me think or made me laugh as much as you. Good luck.
I'm in the camp of those who had been away for a couple days and got to come back to this news. You're a great writer and there is no reason anyone shouldn't be excited for what you end up doing next.
I've been here for a while. I also noticed over time when Devin just posted on the forums, often times accompanied by cries of "troll", to being a main contributor to the site, and still often times accompanied by cries of "troll". Often times even by myself. In my opinion, that's what makes for a memorable voice. Someone who puts themselves out there on the line, even when they know their thoughts are going to be unpopular. It creates a polarizing sentiment of strong agreement or strong disagreement. I think through that Devin, you've been able to craft an authentic point of view which makes your thoughts interesting to read, whether I agree with them or not. Thanks for all the hours spent expressing your unique point of view. May CHUD fix the comment verification system in your honor.
Shit I'm unable to get online for two days and I come back to this?
You are the best film reviewer I have ever personally come across. Put me onto and helped me enjoy more films than any other single source in my adult life.
Best of luck with whatever it is you are doing, every day.
Way back in 2004 I found CHUD accidently through a search engine. After reading one or two reviews by Devin I knew this is a place I want to come back to. I don't think I ever came to the same conclusion after finding other film related websites.
So, yeah, CHUD without Devin isn't going to be the same, but I wish other writers on the site best of luck!
Opened my eyes to many films - and even ways of appreciating films. You deserve great things, Dev. Place won't be the same without you.
For those who have mentioned it... I am not replacing Devin. I wouldn't want to. I'd like to think that the folks who have registered with the audience here (and many haven't) have all done so because they have a new facet or value that enhances the place. I'm going more for an ensemble than there has been in a while, but it'll be an ensemble of good folks. But don't expect another Devin. Not really possible.
I guess some of you have noticed I've been absent for some time. That's permanent as well. I just heard about this, and that it became nothing but a Devin love fest for pages ad infintum. Couldn't let that stand.

I'd say good riddance, but I no longer come here, and you are solely responsible for that. I've never liked you. You can write about movies till the cows come home, but you always have been, are, and always will be an asshole. I hope, even though I won't be around to see it, that CHUD survives well without you, just to prove it can.
Dude, you're supposed to WORSHIP THE MAN.

The presence of some posters/contributors/cannon fodder will always have a polarizing effect on the boards... and while the majority will usually be lemmings/bootlicks/asskissers, I know that Ig is not one of them. He's his own man, and always has been.

I could wax poetic about how things have slid inexorably down the toilet over the last year or so... but I'd be wasting breath. The old timers just don't care anymore, and the new breed are too busy breathing through their mouths because their noses are too far up someone's ass. So, in parting... I'll leave you with this thought.

If you guys were looking for the high road, it's the other way. Hang a left at The Better Angels Of Our Nature.

To be honest, this kind of thing happened a lot later than I thought it would.

Devin's initial volley against the Browncoats is what brought me to the site. I wish the best to him.

Waaaaaaaaaaay back in 2008. Well... at least it took 5 pages.

The thing I'm going to miss most are the advocates. As long as whatever you're moving onto still sees you writing about film online in some capacity (and I have a hard time imagining it won't), PLEASE continue to use that format to vent/think/etc. as you have over the years.

The advocates may be the most special "semi-regular" thing that you do. The lists/series are great as well, but, well... you finish the advocates. (Said with love, mind).
Devin is a really great writer. That, there's no questions about it.

His articles and opinions can be and should be divisive and polarizing, but the guy dipped in personal attacks. Look at the malware/virus debacle attitude to see what I'm refering to (both a "it's your problem" and "please tell us more about it") or any Nolan thread before Inception. An attitude that went totally contrary to his wishes of a good discussion.

So while Lima and Iggy's posts are blunt as hell, they're understandable.

I hope the best for him professionally. I don't think CHUD can ever be the same without him.

EDIT:With Russ, Beak and now him gone, only Alex holds the fort. Not that I don't think the other guys suck, and more Anderson is always great, but the others aren't in the same league yet.
Dev, buddy, you're not going anywhere until I get the rest of my Going the Distance articles. No, really.

Seriously, though, I want to thank you for infinitely broadening my pop cultural horizons in the last 5 years or so. And I look forward to you doing the same no matter where you go!

Here:

You... you've earned it.
