Recommended Audio Commentaries

Couldn't find a thread regarding audio commentaries, so link me if there is one.

I very much enjoy listening to the audio commentaries, even if I'm doing other stuff around the house.

Big fan of the Russell/Carpenter commentaries, esp The Thing. Roger Ebert's commentary on Dark City is a good'un too.

The Giamatti/Haden-Church commentary on Sideways is delightful. Thomas Haden-Church has an incredible vocabulary and frequently cracks up Giamatti. Highly recommended.

There are like 100 threads for this. Where the hell is Darkmite?

Fincher, Pitt and Freeman on Se7en

Fincher and Michael Douglas (and others, if I'm not mistaken) on The Game (if you can find it -- this track is from the OOP Criterion LD)

Shaun of the Dead with Pegg/Wright, and with Pegg/Frost/Ashfield/Davis/Moran

Mallrats with Smith/Affleck/Mosier/Lee/Pereira/Mewes

Raimi/Campbell/Spiegel(/Tapert?) on Evil Dead II

Al Yankovic and Jay Levey on UHF

The Criterion commentary for Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas with Hunter Thompson was quite the treat.

Tarantino's track for True Romance is pretty entertaining. Any fan of his work can't help but get pulled in by his relentless enthusiasm.

Too bad the same can't be said for the one he did with Edgar Wright on Hot Fuzz.

Speaking of Ebert, his breakdown of Citizen Kane is fascinating.

I smell a date with The Thing and my dvd player in the near future. Thanks for the heads up batshit Lithgow.

The (very scene specific) commentary from Kurt Russell, Robert Zemeckis, and Bob Gale in Used Cars is still one of my favorites. Consistently funny and informative. They really sound like they're having a blast.

Yeah the Evil Dead II commentary is hilarious.
Joe Dante's commentaries on pretty well everything are interesting too.
Also the Q&A commentary with Zemekis and Gale on Back To The Future is interesting as they talk about how they write together.

I know it's cheap, but I adore the Jersey Girl commentary just because of when Jason Mewes talks about the time he tried to fuck a grocery bag. Maybe it's because he's telling the story to friends who have probably heard a billion stupid stories from him but not this one, & they can't stop laughing. Or maybe it's because he tried to fuck a grocery bag.

Albert Pyun, URBAN MENACE.

I prefer the Evil Dead 1 commentary: during infamous tree rape scene, "Where did we lose most of the female audience? ....Right here!"

I wish, I wish, I wish a version of THE GAME DVD would come out bearing the damn commentary people speak of. I'm hurti'. It's my favorite movie. : (

The commentary on Shaun of the Dead is hilarious just for Dylan Moran.
Also (and I mean this) I find the Jackass 2 commentaries very insightful.

The Mad Men commentaries are fantastic, at least for the first series. There’s usually two per episode and they tend to be split into one ‘front of camera’ commentary and one ‘behind the camera’ commentary.

Matthew Weiner is always fascinating and always interesting and John Hamm, January Jones, John Slattery and Vincent Catherizer are probably the best actors doing commentary I’ve heard. Genuinely amusing and genuinely insightful about the process.

Since it's not mentioned in any of the four threads linked to by AdrianDyka, I'll say: ANYTHING with Werner Herzog.

Hard Eight
Boogie Nights
The Devil's Rejects
Sleeping Dogs Lie
World's Greatest Dad

Aronofsky's track for The Fountain (on his site, I believe), any Soderbergh commentary (special kudos for Sex, Lies, and Videotape and Solaris), and David Slade's for Hard Candy.

I prefer the Chasing Amy commentary. Affleck is a riot on it.

Actually, any commentary with Affleck is great. From him making fun of Armageddon to being serious in Gone, Baby, Gone. He seems like a cool guy.

Any Oliver Stone commentary, including his two for ALEXANDER are must listens. Same goes for any Paul Verhoeven track. Bruce Campbell in character as The King on the BUBBA HOTEP commentary track is also great "I hate terror pictures!"

PS Tundro, as AdrianDyka pointed out though, there are already plenty of great threads on the subject you might want to check out

The Anchorman commentary. Lou Rawls.

Also, Commentary!: The Musical on Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog has better songs overall than the feature. Thats just bizarre and amazing.

Some have been mentioned but you can't really go wrong with the Kevin Smith ensemble commentaries (and Affleck is definitely a plus in the ones he is in). Anything John Carpenter with Kurt Russell is always pretty good too. Also, Total Recall... Verhoven AND Schwarzenegger, together!

Yeah got it, thanks. Will improve my search-the-thread skills next time.

Hell the commentary track for BOUNCE is great because of him. It's basically Gwyneth Paltrow name-dropping and then him making fun of her for it. It was just after they broke up.

(Do not ask why I listened to the Bounce commentary track)

Another vintage thread, here:

Funny how the same tracks keep coming up, years later. Is there nothing new that's better?

If you can track it down, the track by Phillippe Mora and William J. Birnes on the Communion dvd is excellent, regardless of your take on the subject matter.

The Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, etc. commentary on the LOTR special edition trilogy is very entertaining. Jackson loves to talk about his work and he's interesting, I think anyway.

I just listened to Kenneth Branagh's THOR commentary, and I'd have to suggest everyone else who appreciates quality commentary do the same. I've not listened to many in recent years, as I've been burned by dull tracks and commentary that demystifies some of my favorite moments, often to the detriment if my enjoyment of a film

With that said, Branagh's track is a joy to listen to, it's consistently informative, fascinating and focused. Branagh doesn't just narrate what's on screen, he speaks at great length about his process and various aspects of the production as if he's drafted a plan for tackling the track before he ever showed up

If an Oliver Stone or Del Torro track is an A+, Branagh and his THOR talk gets from me a B+

I really enjoyed the Star Trek commentaries by director Nicholas Meyer for Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country.  His take on Trek greatly impacted everything that followed.  Also, the one producers/writers Brannon Braga and Ronald D. Moore did for Generations is interesting because they talk about a lot of the films flaws (though it's probably my favorite TNG film).

I'm a fan of Terry Gilliam's commentaries for his films, as he is a very focused director and I like hearing about his process.  And on a related note, the commentaries on the Monty Python films are pretty hilarious as well.

I enjoy that STG track as well (Moore is always fun to listen to - his BSG podcasts make for good listening as well) , and enjoy the film itself immensely. It is perhaps, IMHO, the first or second best TREK film of all time, though keep in mind I much much prefer STTNG over TOS and that bias informs my opinion
