Be my victim... (some "Candyman" love)

Your Rotten one is on Candyman love streak this weekend. Watched the first one last night, will probably watch the second one tonight. I just wanted to say what a genuinely great movie the first "Candyman" is.

Really.

It set itself apart from the wannabe bogeyman dreck at the time it was release. There's a deadly seriousness to the tone. And it's just a screwed up piece of storytelling. I'll admit, I still got startled by some of the jump scenes.

Shit, and Tony Todd is just a mean mofo in this too! Listen to the grunts he makes as he exerts himself tearing the shit out of someone! Friggin' brutal! That moment when Virginia Madsen wakes up in the apartment covered in blood with the mother screaming in the background is pretty eerie too.

I haven't seen "Candyman II" in some time so...it's gonna be interesting to watch so close after the first one.

Sounds good to me. I'll have to check it out sometime. And I call myself a Barker fan. BLAUGH.

Yes. This movie just scares me like few others ever have. I believe that it is all because of Todd and the Glassman score is very good too. I just love the opening with the shot of the freeway. Todd's voice: "They say I've shed innocent blood. But what's blood for if not for shedding? With my hook for a hand, I'll split you from your gullet to your groin." The Candyman's voice just gives me the chills. The ending is very effective and quite good also. Hey Ryan,I'm interested in hearing what you think of Candyman 2. I haven't seen it for a long time but I remember being pretty disappointed by it. I think that was Bill Condon's first movie. There is also good news from Sony. I heard that they gave the go ahead for a Candyman special edition DVD. I'll buy it just to hear it in 5.1 sound.

That's the other thing I wanted to mention - the DVD. I hope Columbia/Tri-Star breaks out the special edition goodness for this title. The transfer on the film isn't too spectacular.

Yeah, I own "Candyman II" on DVD only 'cause Bill directed that one.

cool, i was gonna post on Candyman till i saw this....hadnt watched it in a while and i love it. its one of the few movies that actually scared me when i first saw it (id run past mirrors after going to the bathroom)...my girlfriend is not priviledged in the ways of horror so i had her watch it. Still a great movie....that Philip Glass score has been stuck in my head ever since!.....i thought the DVD transfer was decent but dyin for a special edition!

So I took a trip down dulls-ville last night, a.k.a. "Candyman II: Farewell to the Flesh."

You know, it's funny...the film was a step in the right direction, but the execution was just bland as all hell. This is where Tony Todd became a rambling Candyman, only appearing to deliver quizzical dialogue and wave that awful hook prosthetic around.

What made the first so horrifying is that it's an elevator dropping from the 50th floor with no support or safety cables. Virigina Madsen is just on this rapid descent into amaddening situation, part II on the other hand is your standard detective story. Sure, our lead is in peril, a prime suspect for Candyman's murders, but it's just missing that suspense.

Condon tossed in some nice jump scenes in the first half hour, but even then everything felt forced.

Don't know if I'm going to venture into "Candyman 3" territory anytime soon (even though I've already seen it).

One of the few Barker movies to capture the eerie essence of his prose (including, bizarrely, his own attempts at adapting his work - apart from possibly Hellraiser). That line "What's blood for, if not for spilling" just screams Barker. The whole way they handled the philosophical aspects of the story, the internal demons as well as the literal, makes it a firm favourite of mine.

My only problem with the movie was that it relocated the story to Chicago, instead of Liverpool (I liked that it was set near to where I live - sue me), and that they tacked on that ending with Madsen becoming some sort of unexplained Candywoman. From what I remember of the Books of Blood short story, it ends with her dying in the bonfire - and willingly so.

But still, one of the few modern horrors to play it cool and creepy, and in many ways a forerunner to stuff like The Ring, with it's "urban legend made flesh" storyline.

I've only got it on an old VHS taped from the TV about ten years ago, and I was about to upgrade to a DVD copy, but if there's a special edition in the works I may hold out for that. This thread has definitely put me in the mood to watch it again.

Loved the Candyman, but I agree, the ending was typical horror "it's not really over!" crap. Everything else is great.

What I loved the most was how everything seemed so realistically dangerous...these women are walking around the projects, and you're scared less of Candyman than them getting jumped by some thug. Because it's so rooted in reality, when Candyman shows up it's much scarier.

Ugh...that flashback with the kid in the bathroom was horrendous. Likea classic urban legend.

Too bad they had to ruin it with lame sequels, like every horror movie.

Piranha - horrendous as in "bad" or horrendous as in disturbing 'cause I completely felt the latter emotion. Just sends shivers down your spine. And I gotta agree with you about gals walking around the projects, very scary indeed.

The ending to the first "Candyman" sat okay with me though it did feel like it had that studio touch to ensure a sequel.

Yep can only but echo the love for the orignal.
This genuinely creeped me out and still remember me and my mates daring each other to say 'Candyman' five times in a mirror, no one managed it.
Is this out on DVD? done a quick search but could only find R2 versions of Candyman 2 and 3, which i aint buying anytime soon.

I regretted for the longest time saying Candyman's name five times in a mirror after seeing the movie for the first time.

Definintely disturbing. I thought that was the scariest bit of the movie, because at that time, Candyman was still this unknown entity. He got less scary when you saw him well. But that scene with the kid is just like every scary urban legend you've ever heard of, shot perfectly.

Yeah, I got a R2 disc. It's a Universal Studios release, so it should be out in the UK as well...

Then your a lucky bugger my friend, it appears to have been deleted, which normally means there's a special edition of it coming out, bit like what happened to the R2 of Die Hard2.
Oh well, guess i'll have to wait for that.
