Pleasant memories of a Pleasantville star.

'You shut your fuckin' hole!'

He and William Atherton are the best cinematic assholes to ever hit the screen.

This is a CHUD Salutes I can really get behind. RIP, J.T. Walsh.. you were taken from us too soon. Every role this guy ever had was gold, and I would have loved to see what kind of fascinating character work he'd have accomplished in the 21st century. His BREAKDOWN villain* remains iconic and probably a career best. His PLEASENTVILLE character stands as one of the most loathsome movie thugs in recent memory, a true reptile. Even in the small stuff (THE LAST SEDUCTION) he took bit parts and made them his own. Cinema suffered a great loss with his passing, but it's good to know that honorable websites like CHUD will take the time to look back and salute guys like Walsh every once in a while

*no joke, I had a JT Walsh BREAKDOWN nightmare on Monday night, that says something about the power of his acting I think. The BREAKDOWN villain targets a couple specifically because they are from Massachusetts, and for most Bay Staters I think that forever made Walsh an especially dark and sinister figure

Yeah, this guy was a favorite asshole in my youth. One of the first "character actors" i knew and recognized.

He was so great at filling that role. He seemed to appear into the acting world out of nowhere fully formed and just be an awesome bastard.

Love, love, LOVE the exchange between De Niro and Walsh in Backdraft when Walsh's character carts De Niro in the limo.

And yeah - he was pure cold evil in Breakdown.

I always thought it was a shame he died, because he would have made a perfect Cheney in W.

He was also awesome in the "smoking man" role of the Xfiles clone = Dark Skies.

Nicest man to every continually master the art of playing a complete prick.

How we can fail to mention Needful Things, I don't understand. Great salute to one of the great character actors. Played the A-hole like a pro. Like Tati, he was one of the first character actors I remember recognizing right away. Nice salute.

If I ever bump into 'Outbreak' on TV, I will always sit through it until it gets to Walsh's speech about dropping the bomb on the town, then I'll turn it off.

edit: I had to watch it right now. 1.49 of pure grandstanding class.

Great role player.

You couldn't have said it better in the article...you knew Mavros was fucked the second he stepped into the cockpit. Just like Ellis in Die Hard.

Not to mention that Russell Crowe pretty much was Walsh in Body Of Lies:

That photo is so spot on, I almost wonder if that could have been in any way intentional on Crowe or Scott's part. Probably not, only because Crowe seems likely too arrogant an actor to pay tribute that way. All the same, I love BOL and can't believe I never noticed that before. It makes me want to see the alternate universe version (which no doubt exists) where Walsh is alive and we got to see him square off against Mark Strong's Hani Salem

I came in to mention Needful Things too. He really elevated that into, if not a good film, a memorable one.

ETA: You know who could use a salute? Rex Linn.

That "pure tit" line in BREAKDOWN sounds especially skeevy coming from the dude, but I also remember him making a nice impression (in a rare good guy role) in Hiroaki Yoshida's IRON MAZE as well.

Enough can't be said about him in A Few Good Men. A terrific actor and a worthy salute.

Agreed so very much, thanks for the link.

I just am posting to report that I saw TEQUILA SUNRISE for the first time last night, and Walsh stood out with his characteristically menacing presence. The guy was pure class, I sure wish he'd stuck around, I can only imagine what he'd have brought the films of The Aughts. Walsh instead of Brian Cox in BOURNE? Walsh as the Yankton Commissioner in DEADWOOD? Who knows, but whatever he did, he'd have been in top form - of that there can be no doubt
