Things You Want CHUD.com to Do - Page 3

I know it will probably be a huge and thankless undertaking but I think a sort of movie lexicon would be a great idea. I believe people being familiar with the techniques, rules and tools of film making from script to sound to photography will make them start evaluating movies on a level beyond "That ruled/That sucked". I know a lot of the site's writers are familiar with some sectors of movie making. Maybe some of your friends in the industry could also lend a hand.

Nothing too academic. Just a brief description and an example or two. For example: This is what blocking means. This is an example of a good director setting up a scene well. This is an example of a bad director fucking it up.

As I said I know this must a really big task but I think it would help film talk in the site and differentiate CHUD from other movie sites in a big way.
I support this idea.
Yeah, that would be rad. As someone who's gradually learning all that shit about the language of filmmaking, some sort of primer would help, especially what with the wealth of knowledge we got around here. Maybe some sort of Wiki*?

*Don't say shit, TzuDohNihm.

I don't know. On the one hand it could be helpful, but on the other I feel like a site shouldn't talk down to it's readers. You learn those terms from reading reviews, essays, and other articles about film. The kind that CHUD already has. Maybe one day when CHUD has it's own sister site for kids, CHUD Jr., that'd be fine.

I'm all about film education, but that seems a little too simple. Unless Nick Nunziata'd it up:

Z'darrk Hole (n): The effect Robert Z'darr's chin has when it enters the frame, sucking the eye away from all other elements of the composition. Not even light escapes.

Educating and talking down to, are completely different things.
But this idea feels like the former by way of the latter. Maybe I'm some kind of snobby cinema super-genius, but who doesn't know what blocking is?
Yeah, I think a film term glossary would be cool if done in a humorous way, like Roger Ebert's reader contributed box on his site. But if you'd like to know what I want you to bring back if I asked you to bring me a Baby, a Junior, two Americans, a 3-pin stinger, and a scrim bag with some C-47's, then that'd be cool, too.

I don't.
Blocking = designated where actors are staged and traffic movement flows through scene?

or

Blocking = washing away memories of your creepy neighbor taking you to the fruit cellar?
So I'm a kind of snobby cinema super-genius.

As a rule, if it's well written and entertaining I'll read it. And maybe it would be helpful to a lot of people. I just feel it'd be mostly redundant.
More film history definitely. I second the idea of movies you haven't seen, as well as an Essentials Vol.2.

You're a snobby cinema super-genius because Tati isn't familiar with a term used almost exclusively in English-speaking Stage and Film work?

Here are some of my ideas

An editable film database. yes, similar to imdb. but with focus in weird and interesting films, and having weird categorizations like "bodily fluids seen in the film" for example.

A feature that allows users to create their own user lists to be displayed on the website.

I would also love a video feature where once a week nick, justin and steve would sit around watching a movie so we could see their reactions and banter during the movie.
would be extra cooler if we got to know the movie in advance and also watch it beforehand.

another fun idea was let the users vote a film that some of the editors would absolutely HAVE to watch and then write a short impression on the film in question
post #114 of 131
Fetal Films will be something similar to a film database, although more to track news stories and related content about films covered on this site. A catch all film database would be kind of pointless, since, well, IMDb is still out there.

What the hell did I do?

I think a primer would be a good idea except it needs to have the truth buried in funny definitions. Which I guess would technically make it a Wiki.... since it would be half-truthed.
I'd be all for the film terminology glossary is done in a humourous way, but a straight version? I could Google that shit.

Looking forward to the comeback of Fetal. Also, how long for Murphy?

I've noticed these boards have gotten a lot lighter and more fun and bitch free lately. Any way the talkbacks can go the way of the dodo, so that kind of niceness can be on the front page? I hate when after I read a good article, like Rappe's, I have to read jackasses giving shit under it.

The talkbacks will be tied to your universal login soon. So... no anonymous trolls.

...Many of us are film fans but not all of us went to school or immerse ourselves in the technical side of it.

...interview someone; a producer, a director, a DP, a key grip, etc. about their job then give a more detailed rundown of how these hardworking people bring us the work they bring us.
I'll be the third or fourth to jump on board with this. Great idea. Would love this process to be demystified. Really... who is covering the movie industry this way? I'd read the hell out of it.

I don't think humor is a pre-requisite - Renn's "Don't Call it Noise" articles are a perfect example of why.

You are so, so right Jeremy. The one he did with David Stone earlier this year is still one of my favourite ever CHUD things. Funny CHUD is great, but so is passionate, brainy CHUD.

Even though I was asked not to say anything, well, the reason I said make it funny is because that info can be found elsewhere. CHUD's "take" on it would make it worth spending time on here.

I met Nick and the gang back when they did coffee days. I showed up in a fucking hockey jersey. I gave Nick a bunch of Dreamcast parephenalia. I told them Attack of the Clones was a great title for the movie. I was nervous.

The group humored me and my friend. They were funny. They were real. I had coffee, and I had a blast. Nevertheless, I felt like an outsider.

That was over a decade ago. I've kind of insinuated myself in here since then. I was even gonna do some game-related reporting on the site, but I think I didn't follow through properly, and it never came to fruition. My bad, I'm sure.

In short: celebrate Nick's work, and celebrate it well. He's more remarkable than you know.
Don't Call It Noise will continue to be a thing.

The new editorial column will also incorporate similar approaches to different topics within the actual filmmaking process periodically. Interviews tend to be more straightforward, but the articles will very much be CHUD- informative, passionate and fun CHUD.

Mobile/iPhone/iPad enhanced site. Nothing more helpful than having movie/DVD/bs reviews easily accessible when buying blurays!
The thing that's missing the most is a quick schedule, a list of the next upcoming movies. Maybe Uncle Mitch or Nick could do a little comment for each entry. It'd be the CHUD version of a movie schedule. For example

May 2011
Untitled Mission Impossible Movie - Two words: Brad Bird.
Thor - Branagh lets hairy men swing solid steel.
... (just in true CHUD sound)

I wonder if the Master Control Program leaves and also gets to be a part of the new site. I believe it'll be a broader fun site, indexing hilarious dumb shit, photographs, comics etc. Basically, every non-movie stuff that was on CHUD over the years.

Best case scenario, it'll lead to an even geekier, more movie centric CHUD. Worst case scenario, Nick spends all or most of his time over there. If that's it, I'm curious whether it'll share boards with CHUD or not. But I'm probably just completely wrong and painting dry paint on walls.

Video reviews could be fun. The podcasts show that the humor works outside the written form and the stuff Devin did on AOTS was always interesting... just always too short. Some kind of Angry Video Game Nerd with movies or just interesting discussions with funny bullshitting. Maybe special guests.

I'd like to see more film-music focused content similar to the recent discussion of Zimmer's Inception scoreor even reviews (if I knew anything technical about music I'd be happy to contribute to reader reviews). I know we have a dedicated thread for composers and chewers that love them, but I'd like to see Chud's take on it.

For example, I'd imagine a composer like Brian Tyler who posts his recording sessions on his Facebook or Bear McCreary who maintains his own blog would be happy to share with this site and its members.

Heck, with all the OSTs for games that are released, it could even find its way into MCP posts.

Thanks for reading.

The upkeep on this kind of feature would be intense for CHUD's usual pace, but I gotta think it would certainly encourage the use of sponsored links.

I think maybe we could apply the same module we're using for Fetal....

I just like seeing the covers gallery-style and having a link right to Amazon (and that they have links for both DVD and blu). I dunno shit about making websites work, but that's a cool feature.
