The L Train: Peter's Blog

My first entry into the CHUD Blog-thing. Praise me, or rip me to shreds.

The choice is yours.
I'll comment, because people commented on my first(and sadly, only*) blog.

More than the Necromongers(and all that came with them), Chronicles was hurt by softening Riddick. One thing I LOVE about Pitch Black is once you say "oh of course, he's a good guy now", he comes back strong, and becomes scary again at the drop of a hat. That didn't happen in Chronicles. They could have still had that in a PG-13(theatrically), I feel.
Most of the prison stuff is pretty awesome. Possibly because it's less space opera, and more grit.

I'm rude as hell... Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the land of Bloggers!

Great first entry, shamefully I have never seen Riddick I think the bad press put me off, but given those screen caps and your enthusiasm I may have to give it a shot.

Great read, neo!

Good to hear that you're employed, and I know what you mean about making movies count. When I get home, sometimes I try to peg in quite a few movies before bed time, no matter what the quality, thus the reason why I was watching friggin' Ice Castles last night.

I got the Riddick "Trilogy" pack at a pawn shop some time last year, and finally got to see Chronicles, and like you, it's grown on me. I'm not a huge fan of it (I prefer Pitch Black, and glad to hear the real third entry is going back that route), but it does have it's bright spots (THE CHINLUND! Hobo looking Riddick.)

Looking forward to your next blog!

Interesting to note, Vin Diesel and Linus Roache have been in two movies together. CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK and FIND ME GUILTY.

Thanks for reading.
A fine read neolong. I'm a big fan of Pitch Black, but have yet to see Riddick.
Chinlund just sounds brilliant doesn't it?

Friends, Chewers, countrymen, lend me your ears.

I have come not to bury the video store, but to praise it.
I stopped renting from Blockbuster years ago since their prices were insane. I actually haven't rented a movie from a rental store in a while since Redbox and Netflix have become my drugs of choice when it comes to movies.

I did rent Sex In The City a few months ago from the rental store in the next town, but that's only because my girlfriend wanted to see it, and I didn't want to buy it. That was my first rental from that place in almost 2 years! I now just mostly go to the rental stores that are still around to buy their used dvds.

It was a sad day though when the Hollywood Video I had been frequenting since about 1996 closed it's doors in July. I had rented so many movies from there.

Oh man oh man oh man. I just found a copy of APEX on amazon.co.uk. I'm pretty sure the movie is terrible, but I guess we'll see.

I don't know if I believe you.

My next blog post will either be about sandwiches, or film school: how does it work.
Would you believe me if I said it's because Kim Cattrall is still friggin' hot, and that was my excuse?

Buy Apex and review it for your blog! I'd never heard of it before you mentioned it.

That's been something I've wondered about too. I'd imagine that a lot of the guys who don't go to film school are the ones who are self taught, and they also do some great action, like Stallone, or guys who work in the film business, but learn the tricks of the trade by working as Grips, Gaffers, Best Boys, etc. and then they get the opportunity to make that action movie where a guy punches another guy in the face and caves his face in. Or an Austrian guy decimates a dictator's entire army all by himself.

I think most of us would want to be that guy who can write something like that.

And yet, Stephen Sommers went to USC. I'm only kidding, I love you DEEP RISING.

Thanks for reading.

C'mon film school dudes, enlighten me with your knowledge.
I know a guy who is swimming in media studies degrees albeit in a more behind the camera capacity. He said the vast majority of writers that he met wanted to write horror stories believe it or not. Everything had to have a ghost in it. It always seems to be that the exciting writers are the ones who are just big genre fans rather than decorated graduates, I don't think Tarantino went to film school.

neolong, I can't shake the image of you kicking down the door of a lecture hall bellowing "I want to write movies where a dude kicks another dude in the face repeatedly!!!"

Glorious!

It seems like everyone's got a horror story to tell. Makes me feel that horror really touches the creative instincts in people.

I cannot deny, I may or may not be shirtless when I kick down the door of a lecture hall.
Sir, if you aren't hired to write (or better yet STAR in) The Expendables 2 there is something wrong with this business we call show.
neo should bust down the door with a RIPPED wife beater shirt holding a flaming torch in one hand, and raising the other to proclaim that he's got the perfect action movie script.

Then he can let those rubes know that not everything has to be talky and emotional.

Horror movies do inspire creativity. I was pretty much live posting on facebook and Twitter yesterday while I was watching Race With The Devil. Creepy, paranoid, and then it turns into an action movie during the last half that has cars and trucks smashing into each other, and flying off bridges!

The 2 genres can be combined to be extremely effective.

Word on the street, by which I mean the B-Action thread, is that Jet Li might not be in a potential EXPENDABLES sequel. They obviously need one of the Asian to replace him, so why not me.

I can be that Asian.

Fixed that for you

Great blog. I always love the way Yune delivers that rant, I love the way he drags out "disssreeeesspeeecteeedd my whole family".

That's a really interesting insight. Up until that point Tran was just a bit of a cocky sonofagun. After his family was disssreeeesspeeecteeedd he flipped and became dangerous.

I need to watch The Fast and the Furious now.

I don't know. According to Joel McHale's twitter account, he's a Chinese born actor. So I'd be in the running against him. I think he has a slight edge given how Asian he is.

The other major Asian character in the franchise to me is Han. Han's so great that the fourth movie is a prequel to the third just to get him back. And according to wikipedia, he's somehow going to be in FAST FIVE.

That's how awesome he is.

Thanks for reading.

I always find the "SWAT CAME INTO MY HOUSE!" line funny because when I first saw it back in 2001 when it hit dvd, my friend made fun of it by saying "SWEAT CAME INTO MY HOUSE!" because he thought that's what Rick Yune had said. It's been something that we still laugh about.

Ha. It's filled with crazy lines though. And the slang. I can't fathom how some of it came about except to avoid an R rating for language.

Dom: This you're beer?
Vince: Yeah that's my beer... Yo Dom! Why'd you bring the busta here?
Dom: Because the busta kept me out of handcuffs, he didn't just run back to the fort, the buster brought me back.

Really? Busta? So hard!

Then again, Vince thought that a double cheeseburger and fries at Fatburger was $2.95. I only got here in 2008, but I can't imagine that it could be that low in 2001.

Even if you got a Baby Fat with an extra slice of cheese and an order of fries, that'll run you about $6.50. That's ignoring that the more realistic "double" cheeseburger is the Double King which runs $7.59 by itself.

This movie totally lied to me, man. Just like Brian Earl Spilner lied about who he was. I still love it though.

I like this film, desipite it's flaws. Never really got into the TV show so I can't compare it to that but as a stand alone flick it holds up pretty well.

Russell and Spader bringing their A games probably helps as well.
And, let's not forget, French Stewart with his eyes open. That's pretty huge.
I loved this film, but also never got into the series. Sadly after South Park's Imaginationland episode, it's difficult to enjoy the film in the same way.

Another fine blog.

Stargate is the one I always think of as the go-to example of a film that starts out with two good acts and shits itself in the third. Stargate and Signs. So frustrating. I haven't seen it since it was in theatres though so it is about time I gave it another crack.

Also, why would you even consider ignoring the ear necklace?

Because the ear necklace makes UNIVERSAL SOLDIER so awesome that nothing can compete against it. It would be like a movie having Kelly Brook's breasts in 3D.

Thanks for reading.

Nooooooooooow I get it.

Thanks for writing.

It also has John Diehl, Richard Kind, and a younger Djimon Hounsou.

Kawalsky and Ferretti made it into the series. Not played by the same guys though. Heh.

Interestingly enough, Kasuf and Skaara made it into the series played by the same actors. Only two guys to have it happen to I believe.

Thanks.

Davidson as Ra?

Yeah, in one of a few roles he's done before going back to modelling I think.

Not exactly the greatest filmography of all time, but I guess playing a sorta pedophilic alien prettyboy is some way to go. He followed that up with a Nazi photographer or something.

What you say about how it only got you interested when you were following a shitload of peeps is the opposite for me Peter. I signed up a year or so back but only really started using it in the last few weeks, and my struggle has been to keep the number I follow small so I don't miss the good shit.

And by good shit, for me, I mean the funny shit. I follow some people for news, like Devin and Nick, and a few buddies from across the net to stay in touch, but mostly I just follow people who use Twitter as an outlet for writing sub-140 one-liners to crack me up. I rarely post anything myself, and when I do it's in the same vein. Something I've thought of that I think might make someone laugh.

It depends on the people you follow. The guys I initially followed didn't tweet much or was news link stuff, so looking at the page was the same thing over and over again. With more people, and more prolific tweets, it's more interesting because there's new stuff almost every time I go back. Some of it funny, I follow Patton Oswalt for instance, sometimes not.

It's like switching from the pot to the meth, or so I heard on the street.
Thanks for the mention, sir! I must admit I have a really hard time with twitter. I only use it to announce new blog posts and the very occasional retweet. I only follow people I find interesting, including a few chewers. I originally thought I’d create the account to market the blog and publish awesome oneliners, but I’ve failed miserable at the second.

By the way, I just realized I’m not following you. I’ll correct that right now.
Heh. Yeah I get you now Peter, I think I follow about 40 and it's too many for me because at least 25 of them are quite prolific. And yet I can't unfollow anyone - it feels rude.

You just need to get in the mindset that the Internet needs to hear what you have to say RIGHT NOW! There's no time to use more than 140 characters!

Thanks for reading and following. Although, I imagine that the first tweet of mine you got on your feed was me saying I wanted to see a movie set in the college shown in Transformers 2. So, ha.

Bucho, I don't think anybody's tweets, even Jake's, are so important that I have to read every single one. I just read what pops up on my feed when I have the time.
