WTF with Marc Maron - Page 3

The fact that he talks about being stoned 24/7, and then his stated problems with Cop Out, but then can't understand why people beat up on it is damning.

Nearly everything that came out of his mouth was so annoying and self-congratulatory.

He was truly unbearable . The worst part is that it wasn't even interesting the Mencia or Cook interviews.

Exactly. He contradicts himself so much. And Maron tried to get him to acknowledge it a little, but he backed off, which was honestly probably the right thing to do, since film isn't in his wheelhouse and this isn't a Dane Cook/Mencia issue for him.

But it certainly killed what little hope I had for Red State to show some sign of growth as a filmmaker and writer, because Smith's lack of introspection seemed pretty total and complete. He resists and fights growth every step of the way*.

*And if you're trolling the internet reading this, Kevin Smith, please note how I didn't turn that into a fat joke.

Wouldn't matter if you did turn it into a fat joke, Patrick. He has more money than you do, remember? And more Twitter followers, which is the final arbiter of one's influence in the media.

And he gets to fuck his hot wife in the ass. NEVER FORGET THAT.

Took Smith a while to figure out how to milk his connection to Bruce Willis for maximum press: http://www.myspace.com/therealkevinsmith/blog/208600521

On the bright side, Marc Maron was hilarious on Conan last night. And Conan agreed to do the podcast!

On an even better note. Maron tweeted that Gallagher walked out on his interview 30 minutes into it.

Smith podcast was not only annoying now, but will further bug me when Maron shows up with a small part in Hit Somebody.

Unless I have to, I think at this point I'm going to skip Hit Somebody and Red State. I mean, I skipped Jersey Girl, Clerks 2 (in total) and Zack and Miri, so....

Oh god, I hope he releases it anyway.  Please, please.

He's saying he plans to release it, which is fantastic.

We should stop concerning ourselves with Smith and focus on how great the last couple podcasts have been. Especially the Rollins one. The man is my fucking hero. I wish I wasn't so late in my life in finding out about him. Although Maron's constant erroneous repetition of the Nietzsche quote got kind of irritating.

Yeah, definitely check out Rollins's spoken word material when you get a chance. It's all really good. I still adore Black Coffee Blues like crazy.

Already done that Jake. I've been following him for years and years. I just wish I got into his stuff when I was 15 or 16 not 25.

Rollins was weird because he's probably the first guy since Mencia to really not let Maron in. Don't get me wrong, there's little more admirable than trying to minimize your own story in favor of the those less fortunate, but it made for kind of a strange interview.

I think the difference is that when Paul Scheer talks about how fucked up his childhood was it's a revelation, Rollins telling a story about his friend being shot feels like an anecdote he's told for two decades.

Yeah, Rollins has been brutally upfront about almost everything in his life worth mentioning since forever. There probably isn't much personal shit that anyone can pull out of him by now.

Rollins has always seemed like a guy with a super thick hide and an unbreachable guard. He's happy to admit to having his own insecurities and weak points sometimes but he never shows them on the surface. I think genuine vulnerability was beat out of him a long time ago.

I haven't paid much attention to Kevin Smith for the last couple of years but I enjoyed his attitude of, "I can buy any of these ass-mouthed critics and steal their girlfriends." He used to come across as too sensitive to the meaningless twaddle us internet yappers like to spout so it was a nice change of pace to hear him growing something of a spine and at least trying to dismiss our kind of bollocks for what it really is. He hasn't been this much fun since the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

I'm shaking with anticipation for the Gallagher episode. Like, full body shakes so bad it took me three quarters of an hour just to type this post. I think I have internal bleeding from the shaking.

You really enjoyed the Smith episode? I couldn't even get half way... the guy is so up his own ass he looks like a fucking doughnut.

Yeah. That's why I liked it.

I really know don't know much about Rollins outside of his movie roles, so no offense to his fans, but he does an awesome YEAH I WORK OUT gym douche strut. Growing up I knew a few people who did that, just screams insecurity to me (in particular reminds me of one guy who ended up in hospital after starting a completely unnecessary fight with a gigantic nightclub doorman)

Don't make anything personal of it but this is a completely wrong reading of Rollins. Seriously, try listening to some of his spoken word stuff.

The Gallagher interview is as great as you would hope.

Fuck yes. It was a crazy interview, and I like that Maron was man enough to admit he came at it from a confrontational standpoint. Still though, dude is fucking insane.

Well, I think when you live in a world of Fox News and small city touring, etc. you may not understand why people might find those jokes offensive. My impression is that video of this would be one of the greatest things in the history of ever.

I don't see anything wrong with Marc being confrontational in regards to Gallagher. Firs thing I'm doing tonight when I get home is downloading this.

I like to imagine Gallagher actually taking meetings with science professors at universities, trying to convince them to start a boy band, in 2010. The ratio of crazy to right-wing was perfect.

Also, his brand-new twitter account has been a source of amazement today. Just incredible.

Assuming it's actually him, dude likes to tweet.

Not him, says Maron.

"He can't work a state fair!" "Who the fuck would want to work a state fair?" "Everybody!"

Wow, Gallagher is such a piece of shit. He's worse than I thought. He doesn't even have the courage to stand behind his words. A simpering coward to boot. And his science talk was hackier than his act. Maron should have outright trolled the shit out of him and feel no guilt about it.

I almost find Gallagher's constant whining about "where's my fucking career/TV show?!" to be more offensive than the racist shit. Of course, I'm a white male so...

Seriously though, only about halfway through now but the Gallagher podcast is gold.

I just got into these, and am thus super late to the party, but Maron's ability to get people to open up is amazing.  Fucking great way to make a boring day at work go by a bit better.

Smoked a bowl and put on the Paul Krassner interview; turning out to be an interesting decision.

"Your ironic detachment makes you half a person, makes you lack a self, makes you a coward." From the preamble to 161.

I love this man.

Anyone catch the Dice and son episode?

I did. I rarely miss an episode now. I kind of share Marc's opinion.

Dice Clay episode is pretty disappointing.

Was it because you found him boring as a guy (I did) or because you went in hoping for a Gallagher part 2?

I certainly wasn't expecting him to rake Clay over the coals the way he did Gallagher, but it was a boring shooting-the-shit episode and Maron seemed to be uncharacteristically agreeable. They didn't get to the bottom of anything, which is generally not what I've come to expect when he has a controversial guest on.

I get the dislike, but I think Maron got the real Andrew on the show, so I found that interesting.

Been catching up on the WTFs that have been collecting up on my iPod and still continually impressed with the conversations. Conan O'Brien one was great. As was the Richard Lewis and Garry Shandling eps. Conan's obviously some kind of genius, so naturally the conversation was fascinating but Lewis, who was just coming off of tour, was uncharacteristically mellow and linear in his thinking, which helped keep the conversation totally followable. Shandling's just another really sharp guy and (obviously) also funny.

The last Live WTF is probably my favorite of the bunch. Not as interesting to me as the Henry Rollins one but extremely entertaining. I loved all the shit Marc kept giving to Ira Glass for blacking out drunk.

It's up there for sure, I was forcing myself not to laugh like a maniac when waiting in the doctor's office yesterday.

I still think my favorite episode is #130 with Mike DeStefano.

Heads up, Chewers. This episode of WTF has Jon Hamm as the guest and the next one has Bryan Cranston.

Odd that it took so long for Hamm to turn up, that dude's a podcast slut. Seems like he's been on every other show 5 times already.
