Apple iPod announcement

So Jobs is doing his iPod dog and pony show today. Interesting tidbits so far:

-- New OS for the iPad will have wireless printing
-- Buttons return to the iPod Shuffle, which is now even smaller and has a voice feature that gives you info on your playlist and battery life
-- The click wheel is gone from the iPod Nano, which now has multi-touch
-- The iPod touch now has the iPhone 4's screen, the A4 chip, the 3-axis gyro, a front-facing camera and Face Time. Jobs called it "an iPhone without the contract."

I was kinda hoping to see a larger capacity Touch. But it appears 64 is still the largest.

And there's the rental announcement, $4.99 for movies and .99 for TV shows (only ABC and FOX are on board). But the feed I'm reading seems to indicate this is for Apple TV, not iTunes.

Wired's live blog is here. New Apple TV stuff is interesting.

99 dollars for the Apple TV is tempting...

But when they say I can stream content from my computer, is it only stuff from iTunes? I wonder.

So do I need that Apple TV thingy for the movie and TV rentals, or can I get them through iTunes on my PC?

Haha, this is so random when you're not watching the feed:

Quote:
11:10 a.m. A new iTunes and iTunes Ping – a social network for music. “We think this is going to be really popular very fast.” Apple TV – a “phenomenal new way” to watch TV shows in your living room whenever you want.

11:12 a.m. Wow. Chris Martin from Coldplay is here and on stage. He’s playing “Yellow.”

The Apple Cult officially creeps me the fuck out now.

A friend messaged me freaking the fuck out because the new iTV is... black.

They make some nifty gadgets, yes. But my god, the fanboy behavior surrounding the brand is enough to make you puke sometimes.

Dear god I hope I don't have to develop an app for this:

(actually I do have an idea for it CHUD related, but take my advice, stick with our iPhone/iTouch app).

Is that the Nano or the Shuffle?

Damn, then how small is the Shuffle??

This makes me sad I have an older iPod Touch... I can't afford to buy a new one though

I guess that doesn't help much without scale. That's what it looks like, though.

The new Apple TV is...underwhelming, especially next to the pre-announcement rumors about it running on an iOS-like system complete with an AppleTV-specific app store (think an app for every network, games, etc). As it stands, it doesn't really do anything that I can't already do with my Xbox 360 and Connect360 ($20) running on my Mac. BUT:
-The form factor is REALLY nice. It'll be super quiet too, compared to the lear jet that is my 360.
-being able to stream and control video from an iPhone/iPad to the Apple TV is really slick
-The Netflix implementation looks like it could be the best one yet.
-$99 is impulse-buy territory.

Though I wont be buying one...I kinda like what the new Nano looks like.

It will have to be located in iTunes [and therefor be the proper format], but definitely not exclusively stuff PURCHASED from iTunes.

you can rent movies through iTunes now. For the TV shows, it may be exclusive to tv, but this remains to be determined.

Once again, thank the shortsighted studios for any restrictions on how you can view the content. I'm sure if it was up to Apple, there would be one global iTunes store and you could buy, rent, or get a subscription. But that obviously isn't happening...

I agree to some extent. Full iOS would have been interesting, but I think the challenge might have been that 99% of apps on the store wouldn't have worked with a non-direct touch input, it might have confused and annoyed people.

You're right, existing apps like Hulu+ and ABC would be perfect ways to extend the platform. But let's not forget, the hardware could support more iOS features if Apple wants to unlocked them in a software update. NETFLIX is certainly an indication that Apple is open to allowing access to other media outlets than iTunes.

It may be that some of these other services agreements expressly do not allow for direct output to a TV, as it might conflict with their broadcast agreements. Which is why it's alright for you to use that app on your iPad or iPhone, but not here. Who knows for sure, but it's certainly not in Apple's interest to restrict access to content.

Couldn't find a better thread for this iPod announcement so here it goes:

I found my bricked 40 gig CLICKWHEEL iPod and iPod Dock at my moms house. It's about to go up as an art object on my book case!

PS I've also resolved to replace the missing "9" key on my gorgeous POWERBOOK G4 and install it as an art object as well
