Have at.
Thanks for doing this again. Should be a blast!
Yay! Finally.
I'm gonna win. Of course.
Is it normal for me to be salivating?
When is this happening and am I still in? Cos I want in.

ETA: ignore me, I just saw the other thread!
Wow, it's been a while. I'm giddy.
Yee-haw. I'm amped for this one. I might even go "theme" this time.
Poor you. I'll win this. Again.

What Turkish film are you going to drop on us THIS time?
Fun fact: The Turkish films Martin dropped on us during the Fail Draft all have sequels that dodge this draft by only a year or two.

BE GRATEFUL.
There's a lot of Turkish nightmares out there, but this is a draft about quality, so no Turkish movies, nor Philippino Spiderman, or Bollywood Hulk.
Starting with sex, lies and videotape opens up some interesting 1989 possibilities. And the Ripley cut-off only leaves out two films I could have possibly seen getting drafted (and remotely at that).
Is it favorites? I guess we do a write up on each and not simply pick " MRS Doubtfire" and leave it at that?

You make your pick in the draft thread itself. You discuss and/or defend your pick (as necessary) in the commentary thread.
There's no requirement to explain your picks, but the discussion thread certainly gets interesting with debates over selections.
Groovy...Thanks.
In fact, it's customary to only post your pick in the draft thread. No discussion, that's for the separate commentary thread.

I'm pretty sure most of the "decade" draft discussions are still available to look through. They're a fun mix of scholarly discussion and shit-talking.
My goal is to achieve a well-rounded list of movies (5 movies, right?) that represent a symbol of my individuality, and my belief in personal freedom.
Can we end the naming of movies now?
You're right. Apologies all around.
It's cool. I don't want to come off as Dean Joykill or anything. You can still edit that one film out.
Jay, I would try and pick a combination of your favourites and what you consider to be the decade's best. And make sure you pick the "big boys" in the early rounds before someone else does (for instance, if we're talking the 70s and you want The Godfather, you pick that in round one if you get the opportunity). The most important thing is to end up with 5 films that you're proud of at the end of it all.
Although my favorite films are pretty much all from the last 5 decades, the 90's were when I really went gung-ho into becoming a movie fan. That's probably true with most of us here. Should make for an interesting draft, even if it seems a bit "too soon!".
It's hard to believe how quick time passes.
Since so many of you were kids in the 90s, I think there's going to be a real disparity in POVs on this one.
The 2000's draft had so many films that weren't given the perspective of a few years distance. The 80's was fraught with nostalgia. The earlier decade drafts probably featured a lot of selections in the later rounds that many had not seen. I expect the 90's to be in this group's wheelhouse, in terms of the sheer amount of films that everybody participating will have seen. Hopefully that will yield the best discussion (and shit-talking) yet.
Yeah, but my beloved 90s films probably aren't the same as a 23 year old's beloved 90s films, whereas we probably hold the 2000s and 1970s stuff in similar regard. A formative years thing.
Or maybe not at all. Should be interesting. I expect the shadow of Tarantino to loom all over this.
I'm part of the Grey Beards around here. Compairing the lists of Old v Young should be interesting. My list will prolly just be favorites.

Oh, I'm not arguing there won't be different perspectives. I just think it's going to engender the most discussion due to the amount of films that basically we have all seen.

Come on... I'm sure Bollywood Hulk is a delightful romp full of action and substance.

And fantastic dance sequences.

I'm a little pissed because there is one movie I definitely would have drafted that I think doesn't qualify.

I should also say I would have drafted Ripley. But because it's the cut-off, I won't.

....

I was a teenager and blossomed into adulthood in the 90s. And that was also the time I had a stint as a film critic for a local paper. I hope I can come up with something interesting. But I already have a headache.

Very true. And as Bailey says I think because the sheer mass of films seen in the 90s this will create strong discussion. I also think because of the disparity between the preferences between old and young, etc. we're guaranteed some great discussion.

My excitement is growing. I'm going through my picks now. See you all on the 27.
Really looking forward to this though I won't be surprised if everything I'm thinking of goes quickly and I'm left scrambling. Still should be fun.

Oh, it'll happen. Bank on it.
Which is part of the joys of a draft.

Related to that, please put me in Bailey's group. See the 80's draft discussion thread for why.
Well, I just whipped up a list of 88 films. You're gonna have to try really hard to put together five bad films out of this decade,
post #38 of 103
Rule #1: Never post about how you're going to take a film when you could be busy actually taking that film. It's a lesson E.T. taught me well.

If I go with my broad "theme", then I have 49 to choose from. If I don't, I have much more.

Where's Dellamorte? It's not a Decade Draft without the D-Man!
I'm gonna wing it on a day to day basis.
Yeah, I've seen too many plans fall apart to put anything together. Hell, depending on where I go in the first round, I could be taking my 15th ranked choice. There's just no reason to get hopes up.

I might end up doing this as well.
There are currently 31 participants, which means there will be 155 movies chosen, in total. Chew on that a bit, and realize how much of your precious lists will be gone in the first day. There will be blood. Oh yes, there will be blood.

Plus a potential bonus round or two.

Yes, I am here to make you do more math.
Too late to get in on this?
I'll put in a good word for you Keith, if you promise to draft a Clint Eastwood movie we all know and love as your first choice.

*just kidding. I hope you make it. It wouldn't feel right without you on board.

This is going to be a bloodbath.

Yeah, I feel that if I get attached to any particular movie I will have my hopes and dreams stomped on again and again. Lots of great films. Lots of cherished films. Lots of Chewer favorites. This might be the most cutthroat draft yet.
I'm still pissed over losing Titticut Follies.
1990 is the year I became obsessed with movies, so this has been the decade draft I've been waiting for...I fully expect to have my heart ripped out, but that's what makes these so much fun.

It will be very interesting to see the different POV's age-wise - I work in downtown Chicago on LaSalle St and there's a 20 yo kid from Florida I work with who just moved to Chicago. I pointed out to him that LaSalle St is where many shots from the Untouchables happened. He never heard of it. I felt soooo old (I'm 34)
