The Genius of the System covers a lot more than the silent film era, but it's so good, mostly because it's hugely readable without getting vague or condescending to the reader. The history of the studio system is pretty fascinating through the aftermath of the Sherman Antitrust legislation, after which it's too chaotic to follow, and the HUAC stuff is interesting, too. "Fun" "fact:" Brecht was the "11" of the Hollywood 10, but he talked.
Anyhow, this book makes me even more upset I got rejected from Texas, where its author teaches. It's really good. Some day I will write my own book, which will be ignored, except maybe by obsessive Speed Racer/Tim and Eric/Sam Raimi/Lars von Trier fans, whom it will only upset and irritate. Damn it I can't believe I have nothing to do tonight and don't even care.
