An American badass.

How the fuck have I never heard of The Wind and The Lion before? I should go to jail for letting this fly under my radar. Until then, I'm just gonna go look in a mirror for two hours and tell myself that I'm a failure.

Loving this feature more and more. Not particularly acquainted with stories of Roosevelt, but he sounds like a fascinating character. Any books about him that you'd recommend?

This is an excellent column. Love the tone, the research, the recommendations, it's all real good stuff.

Why yes there are. Edmund Morris has been toiling on a biographic trilogy for the last three decades. The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Theodore Rex collectively cover his birth through his presidency. And if you like those, your timing will prove impeccable, as the third installment is supposed to come out this xmas.

I just finished a nonfiction book about yet another totally badass thing he did not even mentioned in the article. It's called The River of Doubt, and it's about Roosevelt exploring unknown tributaries of the Amazon river while being hunted by natives, running rapids and waterfalls, battling malaria and being attacked by wild animals.

Also, Roosevelt believed in Sasquatch and is rumored to have hunted him.

As a filthy Britisher it's interesting to read about Roosevelt as if I'm honest I know very little about him. He defiantly sounds like a man whose life would make an awesome film.

Great Column man, keep it up.

Fun fact: it was from Roosevelt's accounts of that South American journey that we get our popular view of piranhas. For Roosevelt witnessed the classic cow being eaten by a swarm of piranha, which was actually staged purely for Roosevelt's benefit (not something that actually happens naturally). But Roosevelt was so impressed by the little buggers, that his hyperbole laden version of the tale set America's imagination ablaze.

He should have received credit on PIRANHA 3D.

Josh, you fucking rock. This has to be one of my favorite CHUD columns since I started coming here.

And yes, anyone who hasn't watched The Wind And The Lion yet needs to correct this error immediately. Flawed but very fascinating.
Very well done, in the vein of Badass of the Week, and that is by all means a compliment. I've heard excellent things about River of Doubt and think that should be the next Teddy Roosevelt movie. I mean, natives, malaria, animals and a boat ride down a river? Apocalypse Now hasn't been remade, might as well go for broke and put in TR as the main character!
Great read, Josh. One of my best friends is a huge Teddy fan, I'm going to forward this article to him, I'm sure he'll love it.

"Why spoil the beauty of a thing with legality?"

Flawed? Pistols at dawn, good sir. TWATL just hums along, and features a really great score as well. Yeah, Connery's accent doesn't fit a Burbur, but who really cares? Such a fantastic film.

I just wish that the whole film was a buddy movie about Roosevelt and Raisuli.

Impressive column once again! Thank you
Have to track down The Wind And The Lion!
Great column! Thanks for reminding me that I need to track down The Wind and The Lion. Is Rough Riders good enough to track down?

Also, if I recall correctly, wan't Scorcese circling Theodore Rex at one point?

Bonus Roosevelt appearance: Edward Herrmann plays Teddy on safari in an episode of the Young Indiana Jones Adventures.

This column is crazy. I once did a grade school report on McKinley because he got his ass shot up on my birthday, so a similar inspiration/starting, but I like where you took it more.

Happy birthday, Phil.

If you're a Milius fan it is worth viewing to get a fix. DVDs are available through Netflix.

Yeah, Scorcese was circling a Teddy movie with Leo rumored, which would be horrible fucking casting. I'm glad it didn't happen. Love Scorcese, love Leo, but not for this. I think Werner Herzog should do RIVER OF DOUBT.

I would see the shit out of that movie.
Well I'm a big enough fan of Millius (even though I can't really agree with his politics) that I still hold out hope that Crown of Iron can be made when Arnold leaves office, so I guess I'll have to track Rough Riders down.

And yeah, Leo would be awful as Roosevelt. I wonder who would be right for the role, as it's a very specific type.

Herzog doing River of Doubt would be awesome.

He's too old now, but ten or fifteen years ago my pick would be Ned Beatty for RIVER OF DOUBT era Teddy.

That's good.

I think Russell Crowe might be able to pull it off. It's a role his bulk and his public persona would both benefit.

It wasn't Edward Hermann on Young Indy, it was Major League's James Gammon. He's pretty good.
I totally forgot to mention one of the best Teddy fun facts...

He was friends with the real-life Seth Bullock, sheriff of Deadwood.

Wasn't it? Damn, its been forever since I've seen that episode. At any rate a younger, leaner Herrmann would've made a mean Teddy Roosevelt.

Rewatched ROUGH RIDERS this week. First time seeing it since it was on TV. Little sloppy in places, but some great Milius machismo throughout. Had forgotten how goofy Berenger's Teddy is, knocking things over and bumping into people in his constant excitement. Busey destroys. God, I miss Busey. Real Busey, not the horrifying reality show ghoul he has become.
