The Official Thread of Labor Day 2010

Just thought I'd post up a thread to give people a chance to share their Labor Day adventures. Labor Day is a unique event on the American Holiday Landscape, and it's purpose is to honor the labor movement and the dignity of hard work. Americans get very few paid holidays compared to the workforces in other first world countries, so days like this are an especially welcome relief from the drudgery and toil of the work place

My family is about to have a cook out, and hopefully it should be fun. At the very least, I appreciate the long weekend. I usually work Saturdays, two days off in a row (that are not sick days) is a rare treat!

What are other Chewers up to?

I have to work today, and it's started sprinkling. Plus there's supposed to be a tropical storm that's going to hit us later tonight.

I don't mind working today. My girlfriend loves working holidays, since it's a holiday and she gets double pay. She's working today and making quite the tidy amount.

As soon as I get out of work I'm going to go home and relax and watch some movies and eat the leftovers that I brought back from The Olive Garden on Saturday. It's going to be a fine Labor Day evening for me!

I just woke up an hour ago. I find it satisfying that no matter what I do today, I get paid a full eight hour shift for it. Yay paid holidays! I'm just going to wing it. Nothing really planned. So knowing me it'll be a wasted day off.

Fighting off apparently seasonal allergies, but I managed to get about 15 miles of cycling in with a buddy. Going to a former neighbor's open house/swim party in a bit.

I'm self-employed. And my boss is a real fucking cockface. No day off for me.

Well, it was going to be a cook out lunch till we all discovered that assembly of the charcoal grill was a project far larger in scale than any of us anticipated. The past two hours have been mostly full of fights and arguments about how to put the darn thing together.. However, it's now done (though we're still short one large washer that seems to have disappeared), and my dad is napping. The coals are going, and when he's up it's time for cheese burgers!

PS I'm sorry some of my fellow Chewers are required to work today. A chance to make extra money is always welcome I'm sure, but still

Corporate America hates all paid holidays, but as far as Labor Day goes, yesterday STOP AND SHOW was open 9AM-12AM. I feel sorry for those who were coerced into facilitating the stopping and shopping of those fortunate enough to get the day off

PS The first Tuesday in November should be a paid holiday. The fact we have to work on election day depresses turn out for the poor and working class.

Theme parks only know holidays as "chances to make more money." Thank god I'm not front line anymore and get the regular slate of holidays off. Nothing sucks more than having every holiday just be another Monday to you.

I had some plans with a friend fall through, so my wife and I went and got drunk and bowled badly. Then I finished off The Force Unleashed and watched the Boise St./Virginia Tech game. Actually, most of the weekend rotated around football for me, and it was glorious.

I 'labored' all day on my house, cleaning the entire lower floor (and garage) and getting shit ready for Fall/Winter.

I had one of my all time great Labor Day weekends. Saturday I went golfing and afterward the bartender at the 19th hole didn't understand the concept of ordering a drink on the rocks so he gave my Dad and I a solo cup filled to the brim with Kettle One and Jack Daniels (respectively) and my friend a Crown 3/4's of the way full. So after barely drinking all summer I was shit faced at 3 in the afternoon.

Then I spent all day Sunday hungover on a sailboat just taking in the lovely day and caught a very important nap that made me able to watch Mad Men.

Yesterday I just worked out, swam and went kayaking at my parents house. My Mom made some absolutely amazing ribs for dinner.

Like I said a perfect little weekend.

I got dumped by the woman I had been dating and then watched The Fury. One of those events was fun.

Shittiest Labor Day Ever, by Chris Allen.

Went to Phoenix with family to play in annual Labor Day basketball tournament.
Wife gets sick and we spend saturday evening in emergency room.
Sunday morning: notified our house was broken into, leave tourney and go home
Everythings fine, my team loses without me, my wife is feeling better, and just when I am getting over all the shit, and things are feeling back to normal, I find that one of my teammates was murdered on Tuesday. Shot and killed in his Auto Shop. Very sad.

Shittiest weekend actually. (Though I guess it could've been worse.)

Damn Chris, sorry about your friend.
