Proof of Life (2000) - AKA the movie that helped Dennis Quaid's career

Forgettable this one is. It just sorta drags on and on with scenes that repeat themselves: "we wait longer!" "we wait longer, they'll drop the ransom!" "we wait longer!" etc etc and not too mention Anthony Heald's horrendous southern accent.

And I couldn't imagine being on the set with two hot headed guys like Crowe and Caruso. Are there any stories of them getting in each others faces?

Also this poster?

Is quite the misrepresentation of what the movie is about.

I've never seen the film. Are they running with the bulls?

I like the film. It's a little slow. But Carusso is incredible in it.

See to me Caruso was alright. He seemed to over act a bit. I don't know how he was on NYPD Blue but between this and CSI Miami, I don't consider him a great actor by any means.

I like it too.

It's a by-the-numbers kidnapping thriller elevated by strong performances and an eye for details.

Caruso is tremendous, as Tati said. And also, David Morse is great. The heart he puts into that character really makes you care. And it helps sell the ending.

And, speaking of the ending, that rescue climax is very solid. As far as action stuff goes, it's pretty underrated.

Another thing I particularly like about the movie is that it portrays Third World South America very accurately. It was shot in Ecuador and it's standing in for a fictional country... But, hell, it could be Bolivia. The way the situations, characters and general setting are portrayed rings true. As opposed to stupid shit like Quantum Of Solace (La Paz by way of Puerto Rico) or - more recently - The Losers (I don't know what the fuck that was supposed to be).

Like it. The romance, that may or may not have been edited out, between Crowe and Ryan definitely hurt the flick.

It builds nicely though, culminating in a pretty sweet hostage rescue. I'd like a sequel about Crowe and Caruso's new K&R firm.

The hostage rescue was pretty well done. Yeah, Caruso's character was interesting and the history between his characters and Crowes was something I'd like to know more about. What they've done, the places, situations, countries, people.... etc.

And would someone who is a hostage really be that much of a prick to his captors? I'm referring to the scene when Morse is by the lake bed and is putting up a fight with that rebel guy with the gun who was high. At this point was he thinking that he wasn't going to be killed? I guess he'd know that that guy was a low level guy anyways...

It's a decent movie but like I said... forgettable.

The scenery in this movie is fantastic (end credits are gorgeous), and I thought it played out pretty well. But I bought this for one reason way back when it came out on DVD - the rescue sequence at the end. At the time, I was really into reading Tom Clancy books, and thought that the way the rescue went down was about as close to a Rainbow Six sequence as I'd ever see on film...

Caruso is actually pretty bad in this. But it's a fairly compelling story, Crowe is a phenomenal straight-ahead tough guy (like, better and more convincing than any of his peers), and the action it builds to in the end is great. I like it.
