MOVIE OF THE DAY: COMMAND PERFORMANCE

Dolph Lundgren- drum hero.

This was a pretty good movie, although it didn't live up to the massive hype that we in The B-Action Thread all had for it. The kills are damn awesome, and the song by D2 is insanely catchy.

This was fun. But not as great as it could have been. You pretty much nailed it in your review Alex. The best scene is definitely the one you mentioned.

Dolph's latest - Icarus (which will be released in the US with the title THE KILLING MACHINE) is more satisfying as a film overall. And it also has a number of violent kills.

All things considered, Dolph knows his stuff as an action director.

Even if it wasn't quite the end-all be-all of DTV DIE HARD flicks it's still a solid effort. Just the fact that Dolph first becomes aware of the siege while getting stoned in the men's room is enough to give it more personality than you'll usually get in these movies.

His best as a director is still THE RUSSIAN SPECIALIST (THE MECHANIK).

I really need to see that one. Can't find it anywhere around here...

Actually, I'm thinking I might give Direct Action another shot after reading that review. Kind of got in a Dolph mood. And my plans for starting on the second season of Dexter were torpedoed thanks to Bolivian incompetence.

I keep saying I'm going to re-watch The Russian Specialist, and I always end up not seeing it. I'm going to do it one of these days, dammit!

DIRECT ACTION was directed by IPCRESS FILE/LADY SINGS THE BLUES/IRON EAGLE 1, 2, and 4 helmer Sydney J. Furie (seriously, guy has one of the most all over the place careers ever). It's a decent cop action yarn, better than the first Lundgren/Furie collaboration DETENTION. They were supposed to work together a 3rd time on THE DEFENDER but Furie fell ill and Dolph stepped in and made it his directorial debut.

Actually from what I was told DIRECT ACTION was somewhat/almost co-directed by Dolph (who was more involved and had more input than Furie in post-production for instance).

I may be partly responsible for that although it was worthwhile to create some buzz around not only a Dolph flick but probably the most high concept and potentially commercial he's ever done in his solo career. But I also think Lundgren got a bit over his head with trying too hard to combine everything. Still, for a low budget flick this got all you can ask for and has very good production value except for the CGI that ruined the on set practical effects (real explosions, squibs etc).

Guys THE KILLING MACHINE/ICARUS is opening THEATRICALLY today at the Sunset 5 in LA!!!

Dolph smokes fools with the power of Rock?

I'm gonna have to see this, won't I?

Yes. And so will I. It's just a shame he doesn't sing any Elvis...

My first impression of Direct Action was that it was fine. I remember it had some good action here and there but that I was underwhelmed by the final boss kill.

Also that it had a strange ending that looked like a YouTube video made from magazine perfume ads.

Sydney J. Furie is no stranger to action cinema! He also did Hollow Point (which I know you hate - but I like) and SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE.

Anyway... I forgot that I lent that copy of Direct Action to a friend. So I went to bed watching Icarus again instead.

Yeah DIRECT ACTION is better than DETENTION, probably partly because rumor has it that Dolph was pretty involved with it and almost co-directed it (especially in post-production). He also brought in Kyokushin karate instructor Barry Evans who did a good job on the fights.

I thought this was one of the better Dolph flicks. Not ARMY OF ONE good, but a solid effort in all.

Especially liked the scene where Dolph defeats Terrorists with "THE POWER OF ROCK!"
