Nice review! Everyone knows i love this film. And i agree about the working man feeling of it. That and the incredible charm the cast exudes is what makes it work so well.

Just as 2012 is Emmerich's masterpiece, this is the most complete film Bay has made.
It does everything it set out to do.

Absolutely right about the cast. Perfect chemistry.

It was this or Tea Leoni's rat-faced scorn. You couldn't have put it any better than that.

The characters save this movie. And that Will Patton scene you mentioned.

Exactly right. All the Will Patton stuff, actually.

I do believe you nailed it Justin. Great write up.

I've recently done a turn around on Armageddon (I think it kind of sucks now), but no question, it's better than Deep Impact. So is bowel rot.

This is a really good review though. Well written and considered, and you're right, the cast does a great job selling this. Patton, Thornton, Stormare, Buscemi, Fichtner, and even Willis and Affleck are all pretty game.

The red state/blue state stuff is interesting, and I wonder how it would be precieved if it were released today. It does kind of feel like a retroactive tea party propaganda piece, although as has been said recently, the US infrastructure is in such a state that I think we'd be much more adept at puffing up our chests and proclaiming it God's will that we triumph over the jihadist space rock than we would be at actually figuring out any of the science or building workable rocketships. Damn reality.

Everyone is game except Ben Affleck who I think is hilariously bad in this. Its funny how hard Bruckheimer and Disney tried to make Ben a star Pearl Harbor cemented his badness but his last scene with Willis continues to make me laugh.

" Nooooo Harry Noo... I love you!! "

Tea party propaganda? Intresting...

Anyways, I live this film. It's a perfect summer movie. I really want this blu ray. But seeing as I own the criterion these is so much material not put on disc that I wonder if a double dip is in the future.

I still wonder if the surviving crew got their wish to never pay taxes again..or to spend the night at the White Horse..

WHY...

SO...

WEEPY?

Because he'll never be as much of a genius as the man below...

Now that was genius.

Wow thats pretty classic. Almost as classic as his screaming and crying of " Let us in!!! " when getting off the space station.

Liv Tyler was also pretty terrible but then again the character is a black hole thank god she made up for it in LOTR's.

I will say this for Bay the film is pretty to look at.

"I loved you like a son. Always."

I like Affleck has already set up his own Oil Company a few hours after Harry has him fired off the Rig.

I don't think Bay has ever been better in his iconography than in that launch sequence. The music, the editing, the fucking slow-motion is all ace. And if you don't get misty-eyed at "That's your daddy on T.V." than you're a replicant.

Patton is great, but I think the real MVP is Billy Bob Thornton who is dialed down and felt more real than this movie remotely deserved. Love his scene with Willis about wanting the mission patch.

That's really weird. They fly Bruce off the rig, leaving everyone including just-fired Affleck, and in about 12 hours or so, the entire crew has scattered to all ends of the earth, started new business endeavors, and generally moved on with their lives.

Guess I'm a replacant then. When she thinks he's just a driller he's just a salesman. But then he's a guy going off to save the world...now he's Daddy. You can't have it both ways.

Still love the hell outta this movie. It and The Rock are Bay's two best by a mile.

I think the point is that she thinks he's a loser as a driller and doesn't want to reveal to her son that he's his father. Thus, salesman.

But, when she sees that he was really truthful about doing something important, she sees that, despite his flaws, he's genuinely trying to be a good person.

Job's not necessarily the issue.

Yeah, THE ROCK is classic, and this is just a ride with a bunch of great characters.

Absolutely. Shows how shitty the Transformers films are when we refer to Armageddon as Bay's "good old days."

Justin, thank you for the great review. Those screen caps were exceptional. My Blu-Ray arrives tomorrow (used CHUD amazon link).

Those of you in the 'know' already have Criterion 40, and are familiar with this thread. Ben Affleck gives a funny commentary, and the outtakes on disk two are pretty great (screencap sample below).

Willis: Wish I'd...fucked my cocker spaniel just one more time.

Buscemi: I did.

(from Criterion disk two)

The aforementioned Will Patton scenes, and the Billy Bob mission patch scene, choke me up every time.

"I came by to say I'm sorry. I got something comin' up. Something pretty big. Will you...will you give this to him? You don't have to say who it's from...just."

Of course. He was a dick and she wrote him off, but he shakes off his dickness and redeems himself. Anyone who's made mistakes and wished for a second chance can relate. It's not "having it both ways". It's about leaving old ways behind and having a new way.

I was under the impression it was his gambling - not his job - that was the problem.

That's right Rob. The ultimate irony, of course, being that his redemption comes by taking part in the biggest gamble in the history of humanity.

This film has layers.
