Daria probably shaped my sexuality more than any other fictional character ever.

Fascinating.

What a fantastic, sprawling review, Anderson. I'm much like Patrick, where Daria shaped me in a very definitive way. While it wasn't my sexuality (even though I had a massive crush on her. Her and Gadget. Those were my cartoon crushes) it was a large portion of my personality. Daria came along during a formative period in my life, and for that I am thankful.

Great stuff Troy.

Before I read the review, I was thinking 'Wow, remember when MTV was interesting and actually seemed to have some ambition?'. I remember the early 90's seeing MTV Europe focusing on Sarajevo, and the way that an interest in social issues was encouraged. It's such a sad story to see what's become of it.

As for Daria- you should get commission Troy, as that review has really made me want to go out and buy this, particularly as I don't think I ever saw the end of it.

"A female lead whose strength doesn't come from shooting, maiming, killing or whatever vicious bloodsports are called for that day".

Never thought about this in regards to Daria, but yeah, she's anti-everything I generally despise in the ersatz feminist characters created by people like Joss Whedon.

Do you think Daria was inspired by the Ghost World comics? Their timelines sort of intersect, but they always seemed related to me.

Eichler is much more friendly than Clowes.
Clowes is painfully tied to the truth and I don't get the same feel out of Daria.

That being said, I'd love to see Clowes write a movie for Solondz to direct. You'd cut your wrists about an hour into it.

Amazon had a one day sale this past Friday, $27 for the complete series. I of course was all over it. This review (along with a sort of "up to date" interview with Tracy Grandstaff that was released this past week) has me so stoked to see it all over again! It's probably been a good five years since I've seen the episodes in one long sitting, so I'm interested in how I will view the characters today, and how my perspective has changed.

I do remember being terribly disappointed with the final season, but that mostly had to do with the appearance of Tom. No matter how great the series, there's always a character who comes along that pushes the show into jump the shark territory.

Tom was an essential part in what needed to be done with Jane and Daria. It's a thankless character because he's nothing more than utility.

I don't know. No matter how cynical and pessimistic one may be, some rules are universal. Dating your best friend's boyfriend is taboo and will always be taboo, and I think Daria had better sense than that.

Well, it's part of Daria realizing that she is human. Humans fuck up and they make mistakes. When Daria has to come to terms with the fact that she cares about other people, that's when she becomes more than a cynical bitch.
