OK, I didn't think I would, but I miss Devin

Lots of great stuff has been on the site lately, but I officially miss Devin. He's just an perpetually readable writer, and I could always see his point even when I disagreed. Still love CHUD, but the site isn't the same without his voice.

Am I the only one?

Moved your post to the appropriate forum.

Honestly? No. I really liked Devin's reviews, his sensibilities, and his presence on the boards. I'm still a little fuzzy if he will still post here sometimes as a member. Beside that, I have a feeling that if I still want to read Devin, I will be able to in the near future.

However, and I will probably miss someone, but I am really enjoying Nick, Renn, David, Joshua, Alex and Elisabeth's contributions to the site. It's an exciting time I think for CHUD.

When the new site and boards surface at the end of the month... you'll be happy. And remember, we have new staff coming in soon.

Dagnabit. I think my point was ambiguous. I don't miss Devin as much as the OP. I'm happy with the direction of the site. The other points stand though.

No matter how big a presence and personality Devin was on the site, chud has always been much bigger than one person for me.

Maybe its because I've been around long enough to remember when Devin was simply one ingredient in many here, but there are way too many good writers and a few really great ones at chud.com for me to miss any one person to much.

...and as mentioned, we'll be able to read/hear Devin again soon enough.

Devin's great. We all love Devin. But what I also love is the new wild and whacky CHUD.com. I'm not going to cry over losing something great (and we didn't lose him, he's just taking a break to eventually pop up in some other great capacity) when we still have greatness right here.

That's what it comes down to for me as well. I'd like to be reading stuff from him now but he'll be back publishing something soon enough. Maybe I would have felt his absence more if there had been a content hole left behind but the other staff have more than filled that gap, and it's been quality business too.

CHUD's crew is still delivering the best film-focused content on the web. I love Devin's work & I am eager to see where he pops up next, but CHUD is doing just fine without him.

Well, so far here's what I've noticed since Devin's been gone:
  • There is a great list that's been consistent and dependable.
  • That list seems like it will actually be completed (bonus!)
  • There is far more camaraderie and far less needling between readers and writers
  • Reviews that don't seem to be weighed down (or lifted) by baggage

While two of those four aren't directly tied to Devin's absence, they're all HUGE positives (and much appreciated!).

Since he left there does seem to be a lack of "scoopy" news but that could be a combination of timing (September isn't exactly the newsiest time of year for film) and my imagination. My perception is that Devin is tied in a little more than the other writers... to a fault at times.

He was very good at provoking people into some solid discussions but after awhile his schtick got stale for me and seemed to drag the site down into childish bickering (like how every article seemed like another chance for him to shoehorn in a shot at Cameron for some reason). Don't even get me started on forum presence. He was the king of calling people retarded and not addressing what they posted.

I took the high road on the "goodbye" forums out of respect. I saw no point in being a dick to the him on his way out but the site's been a much more welcoming place to visit since he's been gone. I don't miss him at all.

As always RD you speak the truth.

I miss Devin, but what I'm amazed at is the sheer volume of content CHUD is throwing out at the moment. Rappe has my attention, she is brilliant, Nick is the shizzle of course.
I'm excited about what's in store.

When Devin was "on" he was amazing (see esp his essay on the 100th anniversary of the first movies).

His Snark Attacks on various Fandoms were a guilty pleasure for me to be honest. And his Board interactions were his weak point. (I suspect he didn't want to spend time with arguing and just did "drive by Snark).

I'm liking the more enthusiastic Fun CHUD, and am looking forward to the musings on one Stephen Tiberius Murphy.

As far as I'm concerned, the site has carried on without missing a beat. All of the writers, new and old, have risen to the challenge and delivered the goods.

This thread is so weird. I mean, it's been 10 days guys. And there's a new Devin review hitting the site this week.

Three pages by dinnertime!

I miss Devin but CHUD feels viable without his presence. Plus, he might be back. He said he'd never check in on the boards after he left and then two days after he left guess what he did? Check in on the boards (specifically to read our thoughts on his next job.. I took screen caps at home to prove this happened if anyone is interested)

Plus, there seems to be alot more writing and writers on CHUD since he made his exit, and I for one enjoy that. I especially like Elizabeth and Josh. I hope they stick around into the future and beyond. It's been tough to keep up with commenting on all the new features, it can be a little overwhelming at times!

This is probably futile but before this thread goes nuclear can we just let it die?

You know what's been getting me to AICN on a regular basis? their background set pics... because they've been fairly regular. That's the key to keeping people coming back.

I think he's commenting more on the idea of you actually bothering to take screencaps to prove Faraci's presence on the boards. That is very, very strange.

I thought it might prove useful in case I ever tried to argue that Devin might one day return to CHUD, but then I realized that people could check his profile and see when he'd last been on. Anyway, I've recently gotten a new (used) computer and have been taking alot of screen caps. I am looking for excuses to use the utility, and that seemed like a good one. Doesn't seem that strange to me, but whatever

PS I just read Devin's TSN review that Renn posted the link to in the TSN POST RELEASE THREAD, and OK, I'll admit that does make me miss Devin's regular presence on CHUD Hopefully he has many more embargoed reviews coming up!

If we beg Harry to run more background set pics, will you stay over there?

That. As for "solid movie discussion, my hopes for him ended with The Fountain. I love that movie, but when someone saw (and for a godd reason) a different ending (where JHackman's future plot is his way to cope with grief) than the litteral one, Devin actually went with "NO, I SPOKE WITH ARANOFSKY AND I'M RIGHT" bullshit, even though anyone who knows art will know that sometimes intentions and results can be completely different. That closed his argument for movie discussions.

And yeah, this place is better now. More welcoming and relaxed. I like it.

A better place where a whole lotta people seem more into talking about Devin than movies. This is new how, exactly? Just sayin'.

Or that people might not, you know, care.

Might be a good idea to lock the thread and tell people to move on. Whoever does that now.
Devin's stuff was what I read the most, so when he left I figured I'd be here a lot less. I was wrong. You all are doing a great job of keeping the interesting pipeline flowing. Keep it up.

Yeah, this is just a stupid idea.
There are countless threads dedicated to this already. If you want to create this thread again in 6 months to a year, i'll re open it.
