The Norliss Tapes (1972) (TV)

This was made as a pilot for a tv series, I believe. If you liked the Kolchak series, it's definitely worth checking out, considering the similarities.

I like Trilogy and both Kolchak movies just that little bit better (and Roy Thinnes is no Darren McGavin) but yeah, it's a great little 70s TV horror with that classic love-it-or-detest-it Dan Curtis atmosphere.

This was probably the last good Dan Curtis made for TV horror film. Anybody ever see the pilot movie for Spectre starring Robert Culp? Created by Gene Roddenberry and was his attempt to do with horror what Star Trek did for science fiction TV. Always thought that pilot and The Norliss Tapes were very similar in tone and I believe were made roughly around the same time.

Yeah, it looked good for a made for tv product, but I was mostly bored by it myself.

A certain Zuni fetish doll wants a word with you.

Also, he did the TV movie Dead of Night a few years later. Like Trilogy it's an anthology with a bunch of fairly weak stories leading to a killer final one that makes the whole thing worthwhile ("Bobby" by Richard Matheson, basically his take on "The Monkey's Paw"). Essential viewing if you have an affinity for old telly horror, but feel free to avoid if you think Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Bad Ronald, Dark Night of the Scarecrow etc all suck.
